Title: Old Epson keyboard : How to remove switches ?
Post by: Evol on Mon, 21 December 2020, 12:39:24
Hi !  :)

I purchased an old Epson Keyboard online which seems to be a mechanical one.
But I have some difficulties to remove the switches.

Someone has a idea to how to do this ?

Thank you !

old boards are extremely rarely hot-swap, but why do you want to remove the switches in the 1st place? if it is to replace them with cherry you will not be able to as their footprint are different, on the PCB and on the plate, if it is to sell them it is kinda sad that you would destroy a board for a quick buck but hey it is yours. most Epson boards seems AT compatible, a soarer or TMK converter should make quick work of converting it to usb.

and maybe try to document it as it does not seem this keyboard was ever documented: https://deskthority.net/wiki/SMK_inverse_cross_mount
the only Epson on this page is using white switches, from your photo yours do not use white stems, so worth getting as much info as possible

Hi !

Thank you for taking the time to help me on this.
Well it was only to clean it up. But I finally did as properly as I could without removing them  ;D

after desoldering there are some latches you can press in to pop them out. however, actually disassembling these switches to clean them and reassembling them afterward is nightmarishly difficult, and they're pretty dust resistant as is.
