Or is it a stereotype?
Tp4 just watched this Irish movie _Grabbers_ (2012)
Spoiler:
In the movie, they fight an alien who is a starfish kinda tentacle monster, The protagonists have to get drunk, so that their blood alcohol level is toxic to the monster who drinks blood.

everyone drinks a lot
-
No, all those jokes about Irishmen and drinking were just random coincidence.
-
Having spoken to some of the younger generations, there's an anecdotal rise in teetolism as a reaction against the heavy drinking culture.
So yeah, there is a lot of drinking on average.

This.
From what I understand though, while most countries socially drink, Americans tend to binge drink with some areas of the countries much worse than others.
-
meh.. not any more than anyone else at this point..
At least in Dublin the drinking seemed pretty under control and as one might expect anyplace really... didn't really see anyone all that hammered the whole time I was there (well once or twice.. I think the drunks might have been Americans or brits... amusingly.. )
Bar scene was very similar to the states... honestly in Dublin at least. and Belfast N.I. these are the two cities I was in for the most part.

Ok bro, wow, just calling out the ancestors like that.
-
My dad was an alcoholic but I have never touched a drop.
Does that even things out?
-
I know only one Irish guy, and from that sample size I would say yes.
-
I wouldn't say alot, but more consistently - lol.

It peaked around the time I was 18 in 2001. Been on a steady decline since. Certainly my generation still drink a lot.
When I went to college we had the 2nd busiest pub in the country. It was pretty full by 11am on a Monday. My brother went to the University with the busiest pub they were pretty much full at 8am.
I think it was mostly a symptom of an overcooked economy. Irish people couldn't afford to get really drunk frequently before the mid 90's. Then in the celtic tiger everybody started going out 5 nights a week and you could go into work in bits and nobody would fire you. Nowadays works more demanding and younger people have other interests like fitness than mean leaving the house and drinking 8 pints everyday is less appealing.
I try not to drink much anymore (and have been doing fine) the last couple of years. I used drink an absolute ton and frequently but I'm aware you can't do that beyond 35 not have pretty unpleasant repercussions.
-
you can't do that beyond 35
This applies to areas besides drinking as well.

I can share my own findings regarding drinking.
I'm polish dude living in Scotland, so I can compare these two nations.
Generally you can say that polish people, similar like Russians, drink a lot. But I've learnt something about Scots too - both nations drink a lot.
Difference is, that Scots drink a lot amount wise - like I know lots of girls for example that drink a bottle of wine every night. Scots drink a lot but across some loger period of time.
When it comes to drinking session, they drop under the table when I'm drinking with them. Polish people, generally, can drink loads of alcohol in one sessions. We don't really drink like every day. But once we sit at the bottle, we go wild, some can drink 0.7l - 1l of vodka at a session. No problem there. Give few shots of vodka to a Scot, he will get drunk pretty quickly.

20 shots isn't unheard of, but it's well into the alcoholic territory.
1 liter is 22.5 shots
Back in collagg days, Tp4 could get to 10-12 tops in 1 night. This is near blackout

I've literally never gotten blackout drunk either. It has been to the point I couldn't see or walk and had to actually crawl home, but both those times (only 2x in my life) I remember everything that happened. I honestly believe the term blackout drunk is just used as an excuse for people who turn into *******s when they drink.

The thing about black out drunk is, Lvl 99 is when you forget that you blacked out.

Alcohol affects different people in different ways. I'd friends would try and steal things. Other ones would get in fights. Some just won't go home. One guy I know still has to pretty much be carried out of any bar after two hours cos he's no tolerance despite doing this for 20 years.
I only really blacked out once, woke up in the police station. Hadn't done anything bad per se but I fell asleep with my feet in the passenger side of my car and my head on the footpath. I was working 50 hour plus rotating shifts at an airport walking 10 miles a day at the time so passing out any time I sat down was a regular occurrence even while sober.

I've been living in London for the past 2 years. A lot of brits, of all kinds.
Yes, british people, in general, drink in amounts that the rest of the human species would consider... un-natural. Both women and men. I have come to believe they develop some form of immunity to alcohol over the years. They have events like "day drinking", when they just go out starting noon and drink all through the night.
Irish pubs, in general, are what you would expect from a hollywood film. I live above one.

I used to be able to drink a fifth of rum in about 2-3 hours and still be able to walk in a straight line, some people have stupidly high tolerances and others don't.
