Title: Lexmark Model M 1370477/60G0814
Post by: NamelessPFG on Sun, 08 August 2010, 13:45:43
I have two Model Ms. My primary's a 1391401 (May 30, 1989) that's pretty much as you'd expect-no drainage channels, two-piece keycaps, white/grey IBM logo.

But my second is a Lexmark with Part No. 1370477 and Fru No. 60G0814 (January 12, 1996). Silver-and-blue IBM logo, drainage channels, single-piece keycaps...and a detachable cable, which is supposedly rather uncommon for a 1996 Model M (though being made near the start of the year probably has something to do with it).

Reading up on the Wiki (http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=IBM+Wiki#Lexmark+Model+Ms) yields no mentions of either 1370477 or 60G0814, so I'm not exactly sure which designation I'm supposed to use. (I've always been using 1370477.)

Is this some sort of obscure Model M variation, or what? I've found what appear to be other Fru No.s in the 60G range mentioned in a few other places, but not exactly 60G0814.

I've been meaning to include those Lexmark Model Ms in the wiki.

It's probably this with a different part number. (http://www.clickykeyboards.com/index.cfm/fa/items.main/parentcat/13198/subcatid/0/id/239398) There's no difference between them and a contemporary 1391401 except for the logo. Bare in mind that IBM (and consequently Lexmark which was run and staffed by ex-IBM people) had a funny habit of having a gazillion part numbers for the same product.

There are a few 1391401s from 1996 that I have seen. They largely went out of production around 1994 when IBM stopped making the PS/2. However, Lexmark did make Industrial and RS/6000 keyboards with detachable cables up till when they stopped making keyboards.

I realize this was posted some time ago—but for the sake of accuracy 'n' KB knowledge, I thought I'd point out that Model M p/n 1390477 is now known to be:

• The first Model M (by any maker) to have drainage channels

• The first Lexmark-made M with one-piece caps

•  The only Lexmark-made M with one-piece caps and a detachable cable

So no, it's not the same as the ubiquitous 1391401. In fact, 1390477s are rather rare. (I resist using the R-word, as it'll probably give people the idea they should dash around hysterically now, trying to find one... What I mean is, you don't see this particular p/n nearly as often as many of the others.)

Now that that's done, if you feel compelled to ridicule me for adding significant details to a topic that lacked 'em, and you have nothing better to do (for example, getting a life), hey, go wacky. Cheers, A.

My keyboard list needs to be updated.

But there are far more interesting models too!  I really dig the 1392595 keyboard.  And one of my favorites is a rather (more) rare 1393464 Sabre or the plain-Jane 1385162 terminal board.  The M13's are cool, everyone wants the black one, but even now you don't seem to find many white ones around.

The true Lexmark Model M keyboards with the Lexmark Logos and say Manufactured by Lexmark are interesting...

...not to mention the 51G8572

A bunch of geeky stuff.  There's more but the 1370477 is pretty cool as a standalone too.

He may not be able to hear you anymore. He posted that 5-1/2 years ago.

But there are far more interesting models too! ...

Certainly, there's tons of stuff, Snow, and far be it for me to dampen your enthusiasm. For what it's worth, though, I was just pointing out the differences between the '0477 and '1401, which'd been overlooked here.

Both with the little dots on the labels, I see!
