After the success of the Iron180 group buy we were left with some big questions. What do we roll out at the beginning of the year? A new Iron in a different layout, or perhaps another new series of boards entirely, but we decided a revisit to our debut board made the most sense.
The Iron180 saw many little tweaks and improvements over the original Iron165, and we’re continuing that trend of optimization again for round 2.

FAQ
Wait! Where’s the Iron265!?!?!
While we did make a bunch of optimizations to the Iron165, we didn’t feel it warranted a full version bump. The naming convention we follow is series name + version number + layout.
Okay, cool, it’s a 165 and not a 265, but how will be tell them apart?
Visually this should be quite easy, especially because this one is not the SE (special edition) version, which means no giant through-hole weight, but an entirely differently designed bottom accent.
Gotcha, so this is just Iron165, not Iron165 SE, and kinda like the Iron180 with no designation after it?

So this doesn’t have a crazy amount of brass like the SE, so will this be less expensive?
That’s the hope! We don’t have any pricing info yet, so we can’t really talk about it as a new, affordable Iron, but that’s the goal.
SE, FE, no designation, I’m still a bit confused.
The goal is that long-term our naming system will scale as more boards get released. Currently a board with no designation is representative of the standard version of that board. We’ve reworked this a bit since our first release where we referred to the SE as the standard edition, which in hindsight didn’t make much sense. We’ve since decided to repurpose SE to mean a special edition. In the case of the Iron165 SE, that meant a liberal use of brass throughout.
Why not just use the round number in the naming convention?
At first glance, this seems like a great solution until it isn’t. What I mean by that is it might not mean much. Let’s say we run the 165 in the future but nothing changes and no improvements were made, and then a year later we run it again with some improvements. It would become very confusing to track changes across multiple runs.

The Iron165 PC will be released as an in-stock board later in the year and will be much more limited in number. More info on this board coming soon.

Edit after reading through: Looks like some great improvement over R1! The screws were already much beefier than most boards I've built, and the deeper gasket pocket for less compression sounds like a helpful assembly bit.

Since the colors are TBD, it would be really nice to see a silver variant. Everybody here is into red and crazy colors, but I like my silver. I am unsure if this message will do me any good... we'll see. Having my first glass of white German wine tonight at 10:45 p.m. which is pretty good for me.

We're working out those details now. This won't be a long IC period, so I'd suggest putting aside funds soon.
I've been waiting for this to come back, excited to hear more news! The red protos hold a special place in my heart.
The supporters for red have been very, very vocal especially in our Discord. It has a good chance of happening!
Hmmm. Would really like to see more info in the coming future.. As of now this is more an annoucement that R2 will happen and not really an IC imo. Is it possible to maybe have a form to vote for colour choices your willing to take on? I know that all the info will be out soon as GB is planned to be very soon. As far as I know SS, copper, and or brass might not even be available at all. And is it alu plate only now?

Forged CF was really popular during the 180 GB, and I personally really like typing on it. It has a good chance to return for the 165.
so interested in this! any thoughts on the quantity that will be available? thinking of releasing more units than round 1 or similar?
We're still working out the final details with our vendors, but expect many more than the original 165 offering. We're shooting for at least 3-4x as many, maybe more.

Think I agree here, I was very lucky to have been able to grab the Iron180, but FCFS is super stressful and even CK's hybrid system seems a bit shaky (I got the famous error message during sat75 check out). I have also seen several people cheating with the CK system using multiple VMs with different vpn/ip's to join the queue many times simultaneously to increase their chance.
I guess no system is perfect, but at least avoiding the stress and shaky hands means a lot to me and probably many others.

This is the only thing that didn't make sense with the Iron180 and now 165 R2. Canada's 1/10 the population of the US and getting a big allotment of boards for the ratios of people. I would totally understand if they were a Canadian vendor (I'm ex Edmonton-ian myself) and wanted to do something like this as a thanks for their own but they're a US company.
I realize this post isn't going to make a difference with this GB as the numbers are announced just typing this out for the future.
Not intended as a criticism on S+R, I truly think they are among the nicest/non-pretentious, most transparent vendors we have. And 165 R1 quality is just stunning.

I'm all for a raffle system, but I think the frustration lies with having no transparency into the sheer amount of people in the lobby and how many boards are actually left.
Last two times I waited in the lobby (Adelie, and Sat75 v2) we were greeted with some text (and like the salty-ish comment) and booted out10-15 min later.
It is a better system but the UX is bad.

If you followed the steps above and are verified on the server it should work and your discord username, hash and email will be displayed at the top of the website.
To change the email you will have to change your discord email and relog into the website.
Once the raffle starts it will be displayed on the koi-raffle website and allow you to join. The raffle will not be visible to you if you are not verified on the server!
If you win an invoice will be sent to the displayed email.

Will the graphite color be exactly the same as the first iron165 round? From the renders it looks a bit different and more... grainy (love it!)? Looking forward to this! Must for me!
We will try to get it as close to possible as R1, but slight differences in ano baths is to be expected. Surface finish should be the same as the first round and iron180, just the renders are a little grainy.
I was dead set on Red one since I saw the first few pics on discord. But the Midnight Teal kinda growing on me as the GB's date getting closer.
Also would like to know if POM plate could be added to GB?
We will not be selling any plastic plates during the GB, however the iron165 plate file is available on our github if you wish to get one cut. There are plenty of inexpensive POM cutters :)

Not for a while (1 year+) as we want to work on other designs and layouts. After this round we will have more than 2000 iron165s in circulation which we are happy with for now.
What is everyone's experience with the fcfs/raffle system? I understand the its purpose is to prevent scalping, but I also feel like it's preventing genuine buyers from being able to buy the board that they want. Any thoughts?
Personally I think it's a good system. Nothing is perfect; Pure raffle (having multiple entries) and pure FCFS (having bots and favoring lower ping), so a hybrid of the two, where you are raffled into a checkout and then becoming FCFS to check out as fast as possible I think is a wonderful combination of both. It neither favors bots (limiting their chances of entry) nor raffle with multiple entries.

R1 was $475 and included the brass weight.
R2 is $424 + $90 if you want the brass weight.

If you talk about gb year ago then eu community was nothing like that. It basically formed last year, also you have to take consideration into that there was not a lot info / prototypes of iron165 especially on EU vendors.
Last year quantity of vendors doubled. It should be similar situation which was with iron180, because that one is up to date with community size. But since there is not a lot of comments writing about eu size, one can hope interest and quantity is just on point, though I haven't check situation with iron 180 maybe it was double interest than quantity of boards. Thus I am not saying we need 500, but at least small increase because obviously canada community boards ratio is way off and eu is now getting most rought boards interested ratio (before usa)
And since you guess community is not huge enough in eu, why eu use raffle at first place, isn't raffle used when quantity is low and interest is high?
