If the shirt I'm wearing actually has one, usually I'll keep small notes in it (like if I have to write down an important phone number or something similar). Sometimes I'll put my phone in it if I'm doing housework that isn't loud and I want to listen to something over my phone speaker because I don't want to bother with my other speakers at the time.

I will admit to being a geek, I used a pocket protector through most of the 1980s-1990s. During that time a good portion of my work was doing a variety of tasks involving drawing with pen and/or pencil on paper and/or mylar. That requires a variety of instruments - eg - at the minimum - black pens of multiple widths, red pen, mechanical pencil, plus often another colored pen, and possibly "invisible" pencils (purple for marking tracings to be blueprinted, yellow for paper to be photocopied).

Carrying your basic drawing kit in your shirt pocket is extremely handy.

A pocket protector will make you look like the main character’s nerdy sidekick of a stereotypical 80s teen sitcom.

I instead suggest wearing quality ****s that are durable enough to stand up to the clip of a pen, and to carry pens that do not leak. I advise against carrying fountain pens, and to instead carry rollerballs if you must.

Besides pens I also sometimes keep a AA or AAA flashlight in there. While I’m working, I usually have a watchmaker’s loupe and 1 or 2 tweezers in there. However, that’s only when not wearing the jacket, otherwise these things will be kept in the font jacket pocket due to better accessibility.

When I wore shirts to work I had my music player in my top pocket and a custom earphone cable the perfect length.

Goth kid too, eh?

No but I usually have a notebook and a Parker Jotter pen with a gel refill. I don't use a fountain pen because they leak and I'm not wearing a pocket protector on the shirts I normally wear; business casual plaid looking ****.

I too often wear a jumper over the shirt for any shirt pocket to be accessible. It's a consequence of living in a colder climate.

when my shirt has one it become my "random small things i need not to lose" pocket :) USB keys, hydroalcoholic gel bottle, papers with usernames or files that got a problem to fix... (i am in IT) everything that fits goes in there. the only issue is that not all shirts have those, like the woman jeans that sintpinty was complaining about :)

Most of the time I used it to hold my business cards or cigs (when I smoked).

Pens, Glasses and occasionally a 6" machinist ruler. Oh, and the odd assorted screw when I am working on something. :)

I usually wear t-shirts so generally I don't have a pocket. When I do, I use it to hold my mp3 player.

If you didn't mind the stretched neckline (see last pic) you could put anything in there (https://cdn.geekhack.org/Smileys/solosmileys/laugh.gif)  Still not a good idea if it's cold.
