Title: Item dreams, stuff you wish you could have
Post by: Ekaros on Fri, 13 August 2010, 13:18:53
Everyone is propbaly dreaming about owning item or an other. So post here if you have thinked about something you would like to own, be is as geeky or as non-geeky, as usefull as non-usefull as realistic or as unrealistic etc. etc. etc.

So for some reason I always wanted one of these:
An IPK (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilogram#International_Prototype_Kilogram) replica. Weighing in 1 kg (very very very ... exactly) cylinder of platinum-iridium, totaly useless, but would be pretty cool to own, show around and also quite geeky...

So what items you dream about, might post some more here later?

I've dreamed about owning a Maybach (http://www.seriouswheels.com/pics-abc/Brabus-Maybach-Seatback-Screens-1024x768.jpg)

Not realistic.

Yeah I would want a driver for most trips.

As for the keyboard, it looks like a wireless one with too much fancy wood on it.

That explains a lot ...

Seriously though, I knew what the first link was going to be before I clicked on it (as I read your OCN comment before clicking). Funny thing is it really isn't THAT unattainable, just retardedly overpriced. I can buy one right now, but I wont. Ever. Wait a year, buy one for way lower.

1969 Chevrolet COPO #9560 Camaro (Central Office Production Order)
- 425HP 427CI ZR1 all aluminum big block
- Rare and have sold for $800k to over $1 million USD
(http://cll.hemmings.com/story_image/43182-500-0.jpg)

Right up there with the Camaro would be any Shelby AC Cobra... replica or real.

I wouldn't mind an '87 Buick GNX either.

More realistically.... a '67 Pontiac GTO, '67 Chevy Chevelle, '71 Chevy Camaro RS (aka split bumper).

Even more realistically... I'd like to build a Rythmik Audio 15" servo sub for music and home theater duty - hopefully with in the next year.

I'd like a Bugatti Veyron Super Sport:

(http://cache-02.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/12/2010/07/bugatti_veyron_04.jpg) (http://jalopnik.com/5580332/bugatti-veyron-super-sport-the-worlds-new-fastest-car)

Since it's so unlikely, perhaps I should try to attain it in Lego, but I'm not sure I could outdo what Sheepo has done:

(http://images.mocpages.com/user_images/32499/1264886837m_SPLASH.jpg) (http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/172197)

I recommend checking out the video footage of the gearbox in action.

I think I'll have to quit my day job now if I want to build it anytime soon...

oooh this is a fun thread.

Lets see. Not counting things that havent been invented yet, I'd like...
-VW GTI (my dreams are modest)
-a nice girl with a heart of gold (and sometimes unrealistic)
-a cozy 2 bedroom house about an hour north on the city on the metro north line, preferably with a river view
-wish i could get my old tennis serve back

actually thats about it. I think i have everything else i want for the moment.

if we count things that are still vaporware, i'd really like:

-a car that gets 100mpg and doesnt contribute evil oil money to evil dictatorial regimes
-a house that is uber efficient in heating and cooling
-left-leaning friends who are actually willing to criticize the non-west on the same terms that they criticize the west
-MS Office mobile apps for win7 smartphone that works with capacitive screen and stylus
-android tablet with capacitive screen that works with a stylus

(the latter two should be out by december).

Hmmmm... my dreams of things to have:

*a double-manual harpsichord
*a suit of armour
*an archery range
*a T221 monitor
*a sidstation
*many old manuscripts which I will never be able to obtain
*a microphone, something like a Neumann TLM-170 (although there was an older one which I forget the name... it was suspended in midair).

I'd go for a '70 HemiCuda if I won the damn lottery.
There's also a soft spot in my heart for the late 60's Barracudas with them bubble rear windshields. Gorgeous.

I'd really like a whole F-16C cockpit with everything inside interfaced to a PC, perhaps with the whole thing mounted on a motion platform and a display system that surrounds practically the whole outside area, all for Falcon 4.0's sake.

Then a whole Ka-50 cockpit for DCS: Black Shark as well.

I'd also like a set of those old Virtual World Tesla pods that I can't seem to find in arcades anymore.

Having the real aircraft would also be nice, but they're not exactly simple machines to operate, especially the startup procedures...

As for something more down-to-earth, I'd like a Maybach or Rolls-Royce or similar ultra-luxury vehicle for general driving...and when it's performance I'm after, I'd like an '03 Impreza in its WRC configuration, paddle shift and all.

Then I'd like a decent house of my own, complete with good server and networking infrastructure (I'd want my own game servers on my own ISP), CNC mills, BGA rework stations, IC programmers, and anything else I could use to build high-quality peripherals myself, and have all of this powered by some combination of solar panels, wind turbines, and a nuclear power plant. Basically, anything and everything that allows me to become largely self-sufficient in my interests.

Yeah, fat chance. But one can dream...

One of those Jeff Hanneman guitars with the SS fret inlays. Very limited run AFAIK (having Nazi German symbols on your guitars is a surefire way of getting them forcibly discontinued).

For car probably DeLorean for obvious reasons even if I know they are horrible... Then Subaru Imprezza and maybe Nissan Skyline GTR... Pretty low end stuff of dream cars ;D I might even one day have money for those...

Hand made full metal keyboard or one of those wooden ones...

I'd like a nice house...oh, and a Topre keyboard =)

EDIT: Since we're talking about cars (I already have one I really like - an Infiniti) I'd also like to have a Maserati GranTurismo. Those things are just sick.

And while we're talking sky high stuff...I suppose a private jet with a pilot would be quite nice. Especially one large enough to handle crossing the Atlantic.

-VW GTI (my dreams are modest)

Will have at some point. BUT, since everyone is talking cars, and you mentioned this, I'll add mine. Simultaneously the most over and under-engineered vehicle ever:

GTI W12-650
Quote
The car features a 6.00L W12 bi-turbo engine from the Bentley Continental GT delivering 650 PS (478 kW; 641 hp), 720 N·m (531 lb·ft) of torque, 0-100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 202 mph (325 km/h)[15]. The W12 differs from the standard GTI in several ways. It is 70 mm (2.76 in) lower and 160 mm (6.30 in) wider, the rear seats have been removed to accommodate the mid-engine design, and the roof is made from carbon-fibre.

oh ya, i saw that episode of top gear (one of my fav shows, btw). A gti with a v12, why not.
I also wouldnt mind the new scirroco replacement (whats it called? still called a scirroco?) instead of the gti. Either one would do.

I also always liked the short-lived corrado. Thought it looked great.

corrados still go for a hefty price if they are well maintained. My first ride was a fully converted 84 diesel rabbit with a 16v scirocco engine in it. It was a ****ing beautiful machine, but a pain in the ass for me (admittedly non-gear head). It required serious wrench time, and I was in school and working full-time. I didn't have it long.

the closest i came to this vw family of cars was test driving a SICK looking light green GTI in the early 90's when I was shopping for a car.  Plaid seats and fog lights and the old circular headlights which were so cool (not the "bug-eyes" they have on the golf now). It really looked the part.

Really liked how it drove except for one thing - i think this may be a 'feature' on all vw's - clutch takeup was NOT smooth, very abrupt. Was nearly impossible to drive smoothly in stop and go traffic. I imagine thats something i'd eventually figure out how to work around, but i was so spoiled by my '91 civic hatchback ("shifts like butter").

I did drive a CRX Si back in the day - another very cute, very cool little car - was so tempted to buy a CRX in early 90s - but to be honest, the Si's performance didnt impress me (and when I test drove one, I really put the pedal to the floor and flung it around). Really was not that zippy!  I think the gti would have driven circles around it.  But then hondas are always low on torque. They dont get going till you rev into motorbike range.

I also test drove an NX 2000 (remember that beast? Nissan). Ugly as sin, but different and kind of compactly cute. It *hauled ass*. Also drove an sx240 hatchback - what a beautiful car.  Rear wheel drive, spun it out a few times and had a ball, really liked the interior layout too, but it was actually a *big* car (bigger than it looks) with long-ass hood and I wanted something far more compact.

Anyway, all those fade in comparison to a good looking GTI if I can get my hands on one. I think the new scirroco actually looks better than the new GTI.

You know what looks suprisingly sexy?  The new ford focus RS thats coming out next year. I'd seriously consider that instead of a VW, and from what i've read it hauls ass too.

never had the issue with the VWs I have driven regularly - '85 golf (even after I replaced the seriously toasted clutch) and 2002 Jetta TDI. I'll leave the rabbit out since it was completely non-stock, and EVERYTHING was abrupt on that thing. So great. I have never driven an auto transmission VW to compare.

I'm driving a civic now and I would agree, it is smooth.

I haven't seen the new RS but I'm sure it goes, are they still sharing the same guts with the Volvo C30 (or were they ever for the performance line)? I prefer the NEW c30 design. Either way, I'm partial to VW, and would love to get my hands on a new GTI, when they switched to the new parallel red trim lines on the grill:

For the longest time I wanted a 2005 VW R32 in that blue color they did them in. god do those look and SOUND amazing:

i think my REAL dream car though, is an audi rs4:

ya c30 is prettier in person than in pics, unusual back end but in person it doesnt seem as weird. Saw one parked on the street not long ago and walked around it a few times, lol.

If I could afford one, I think the rs4 looks *classic*, really handsome smart lines for a pocket rocket. I believe there's a hatchback too (love those zippy hatchbacks) or maybe its the a3 hatch. Love the way it looks.

I drove my brother-in-law's A6, it cranks; he then traded it in for an Audi TT, which I also drove, and it also cranks ;)  More power than i'd ever need though. I like torquey, smooth shifting, tossable and good looking hatches -- that I can spin around a bit when I want to have fun, but I dont really need a car that goes to 60 in 5 seconds! I think about 6-7 seconds is about perfect for me. (more than that and they tend to lack torque, less than that and the extra power is wasted on me anyway). I'd rather put the extra money into creature comforts.

Thats one of the things i like about the newer gti's - they're really quite luxurious inside.

Also very cute little hatches: Audi S1, Bmw 1-series.

i drove a jeep once. it was fun but bumpy! (short wheelbase).

Later tonite i'm going to drive a mazda 3 hatch for the first time (zipcar). Its got tiptronic transmission (i'd prefer a standard manual, but i guess tiptronic is better than a straight automatic). I'll have it for 3 hours, should give me a good feel for it. Its been pretty well reviewed in the magazines. Not sure how I like its big smiley front end tho.

i agree actually, i find tiptronic annoying. My b-in-law's audi TT had tiptronic. Didnt like it at all, i left it in automatic mode most of the time. Just not the same without a clutch pedal for your left foot.

but it might let me rev up the engine a bit in this case and see what the engine's got.

no its a zipcar  (http://www.zipcar.com/)rental.
Nice thing about zipcar is they have some intersting models you can rent for very cheap. I want to try the Mini and the BMW 3 series as well (both available at zipcar).  Never driven a beemer. Will get around to it in next few months.

Possibly, although I felt the lag and feel on the second gen tiburon I spent a good amount of time driving 'tip on made for a ****ty driving experience. Spent all the time in D.

I sure would like to try a "real" Semi-automatic transmission:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semi-automatic_transmission

Quote
Despite superficial similarity to other automated transmissions, semi-automatic transmissions differ significantly in internal operation and driver's "feel" from manumatics[tiptronic] and CVTs. A manumatic, like a standard automatic transmission, uses a torque converter instead of clutch to manage the link between the transmission and the engine, while a CVT uses a belt instead of a fixed number of gears.

Like, say, on a Ferrari.

its a great deal if you only drive occasionally, and super cheap. Check it:

-free gas! free insurance! nearly unlimited miles! and starting at $8/hour.
-variety of locations to pick up the car. For me, for instance, the zipcars are located 2 blocks from my home. They're spread out around town in various locations, usually near campuses for instance.
-there is an annual fee (I think around $75 - BUT - most colleges will subsidize it (my college pays $50 of that), and even most corporations have deals (my friend who works at the world bank says WB pays entire $75 for her). Also there are e-coupons floating around for that annual fee (like half off and etc).
-you can share one zipcar with like four of your friends (split the costs, and all of you register as drivers on the same membership card).

But the best part is actually the car selection they have, which is very interesting (they also have neat utilitarian stuff like the Scions, and cutting edge stuff like hybrids).
I also want to drive the hybrid models they have. I was a passenger in a hybrid prius but have never driven one.

just got back from a 3 hour mazda3 voyage.

This is the actual car I drove: :)

Pros:

-this is an impressive automobile
-BROAD power band, torquey as heck, peppy as heck
-tiptronic: not as annoying as the audi's tiptronic! was fun for about 5 minutes before i got bored and put it back into auto. But thats 4 minutes longer than I enjoyed the audi's. (Nothing beats a standard manual of course, as far as driving fun goes.)
-i'd be proud to own one
-extremely comfy seats, firm ride (slightly jarring over potholes but mostly just supple)
-quality-everything, from door-thud to switches and knobs
-this zipcar happened to be brand new, about 100 miles on it, with temporary license plates and new car smell.
-bought some lumber from home depot and the inherent utility of the "hatchback" design shone through once again

Cons:
-has the turning radius of a drunken elephant. Seriously. My honda turned like a shopping cart. The mazda3 needs a 6 lane highway to perform a u-turn.

-looks are a bit controversial. Taken as a whole, its not a bad looking car, but its not the down-to-business look of the gti. I like the clean utilitarian lines of the gti or the conservative sleekness of the focus. The mazda is, well, curvy, all over. The headlight bubbles, the backlight bubbles, curves curves curves. The side scoops, the front-end grin. Everything bulges or scoops or smiles.

So while its not a bad looking car by any means, for myself I'd probably still take a GTI (or scirroco, or ford focus hatch) with their cleaner lines. Just a personal aesthetic preference. But I have a feeling the mazda3 is probably a much better value for the money and is likely every bit the same quality, if not better.

Next time i'll take either the Mini or the beemer :) been wanting to try them out too.

drove my first hybrid.

had to unexpectedly go to queens. I'm getting too used to jumping into those zipcars. so convenient.

This time the civic hybrid was available. My first drive of a hybrid!

The civic hybrid gets 40 city/45 hwy mpg. Not bad.  It also (unlike the prius) is built to be as unobtrusive as possible, for instance, not a plug-in, and its electric motor is only an 'assist'. It auto-recharges itself from the gas engine, I believe, and from regenerative braking.

Driving impressions:
-95% the experience of a normal car. As it was designed to be.
-the two biggest things you notice:
a) engine shuts off at stop lights. This is a little weird at first. It starts up soon as you release the brake with your foot, and starts up nearly instantly and very quietly. However if you're in a hurry and slam on the gas (as manhattanites tend to do), the car will lurch a little cuz its still starting up when you do that. This was probably the most noticeably 'hybrid' aspect of driving this car.
b) on highway, when you accelerate, you can hear a whirring that comes on and fades as you let off the gas. I presume this is the elec motor winding up to provide its 'assist'.
c) the dashboard is normal looking except for the extra gauge showing charging/assist status of the batteries. (kind of like having a turbo, i suppose).

-looks just like a normal civic - which i liked - no weird body panels like on the prius.

-not a lot of pickup, as might be expected, if you step hard on the gas. Though it wasnt overly annoying to drive either, its fine if you're not in a hurry.

driving the audi tt again (in chicago for a few days).

-its nice to hit 60 in 5 seconds
-but you know, i rarely ever need to ;)
-yea the tiptronic isnt great
-other nitpicking: steering feel is 'remote'. acceleration isnt linear (the turbos come on abruptly). its hard to get into and out of the car (have to fold yourself into a pretzel).

on the other hand it looks like a million bucks. I'll be honest tho, i'd prefer a crx or miata, i'd consider them to be more fun and easier to live with.

I like cars that are 'responsive' (a vague term, i know). (Just means they're peppy and you get a feel for the road and things work linearly so you have the feeling of control and feedback).  As opposed to raw power.
I also like creature comforts, which many pure sportscars tend not to have so much. Like being able to get into and out of it easily :)

s2000 is a nice looking car, i'd prefer its looks too. What were your impressions from driving it?  Doesnt it rev to like 9k or something? Honda always seems to make motorbike revving  low-torque cars, its my one big complaint about them. I like low end torque.

yeah it's seriously like two crotch rockets glued together, but it goes like stink. I wouldn't buy one though.

What I really want to try is VW's new diesel version of the GTI ... GTD. You want all your power at the low end?
Quote
GTD   1,968 cc (120 cu in) I4 turbo (CBBB)
170 PS (125 kW; 168 hp) @4200
350 N·m (258 lb·ft) @1750–2500

Doesn't have quite the horsies that the GTI does, but A LOT of torque and plenty of power overall to make that a quick little SOB.

dude i've *seriously* considered the GTD. If i dont get the GTI, it'll definitely at least be the GTD.  Ya, those torque numbers look fantaastic, and its MPG rating is very, very good (like in hybrid car range) too.  I'm hoping they'll also eventually build a diesel-hybrid (which i imagine should get mileage in 70mpg range! and still feel normal and peppy to drive).
It'll happen.

The only thing about diesel - I suggested the GTD to my b-in-law who's looking at hybrid cars right now - but he says diesel is very expensive? Is that true? I dont know diesel prices vs gasoline prices.  If thats true, it would offset the great gas mileage a bit.

right now in Canada (Ont) diesel is cheaper by about 3-5 cents a litre. It does go up and down, so it is occasionally higher, but the mileage(kilometrage?) is still enough to make up. My friend routinely filled a tank and got 1000+ Km on her 2002 TDI, at the time that was 2 tanks of gas in any other car.
