Title: Dat Ship Stucko Suez
Post by: tp4tissue on Sat, 27 March 2021, 18:16:02
Why do they say you can't tow it.   Did they even try Rockets ?

I think they tried pulling it out with several tug boats, it didn't budge, it's big, heavy and water doesn't provide enough resistance to to do it with the tugs available. What I don't get is why they haven't brought in big rig tow trucks to help winch it out.

You can track the ship here:

So, you call up elon, he lands the rocket on a temporary landing pad nearby,  They turn the rocket sideways, lay it on a sled.  tie some rope to the sled and the ends of the boat,   ignition. problem solved.

Someone tried to put the square peg in the round hole again. . .

They're blamed the wind, but news reports also investigating user error. Although it wouldn't make much difference it's not like bill gates steered the boat wrong and you can sue him for $10 billion.

Imagine all the impact on keyboards being transported...

This and all US ports congestion...
That's also where all keyboards and keycaps are held!  :'(

Most Chinese goods bound for the US come across the Pacific and through the Panama Canal. Not saying all, but most.
What it will impact in the U.S. is the cost of gas.

It looks like they were or are making a big push to free the ship today, ship tracker showed a significant increase in ships.

Edit: Looks like it may actually be free or at least swung out of the way clearing a path. Only took 16 ships to do it.

It's underway as of about 40 minutes ago.
Slow (probably being towed) but it's moving.

Beware trying the tracker I posted, they're being swamped.

They blamed the wind
Because it was only windy at the front of the boat?  I know it's big but still (https://cdn.geekhack.org/Smileys/solosmileys/laugh.gif)

I wonder if the other boat drivers would get nervous, and someone else gets stuck. hahahaha

Wind pushes those boats way more than the current does, it's amazing what wind does to something that big. It's literally a giant sail.

Watching the logs they were certainly fighting a lot of wind, makes me think they were fighting the wind and then passed behind something giving them a sudden break causing it to dart. They were also going twice the recommended speed for good conditions much less windy conditions though they were far from alone on this.  I do wonder if they were using the bow thrusters to counter the wind, I admit I have no idea if the ship would allow it at that speed.

These are the most advanced computer controlled boats on the planet.  This might be financial manipulation. ??

They turn the rocket sideways, lay it on a sled.

Spoiler Alert.

I was disappointed when Alastair Reynolds ended the Revelation Space trilogy (one of the most awesome works in all of science fiction) with this goofball trick.
