I've been thinking about printing out a custom FR4 plate but I'm not sure where to start. I've seen a lot of customization options for plates on PCBway but I have no idea on what they are. Any ideas on where to start? thanks

Printing FR4? Interesting...
You want it to be 1.5mm thick as that's what MX style switches clip into, the holes can be square or more complicated to allow for switch top removal and stabilisers need to match what you want to use (Cherry PCB or plate mount or Costar)
If you haven't found Keyboard layout editor (http://keyboard-layout-editor.com) and Swill's awesome platebuilder (http://builder.swillkb.com/) they would be a good place to start :)
