Title: How does ABS feel out of the box and after shining?
Post by: ihoop123 on Mon, 17 May 2021, 22:25:24
Hello, I'm a newbie to the mechanical keyboard world and I was wondering what GMK feels like after shining and the durability. Is it something you would keep typing on and is it something that you've switched to PBT for?

I'm debating on getting a nice set of GMK or EPBT and any input would be amazing. Thank you.

i don't think the "feel" of the keys changes that much after some shine, but personally, I like the texture/feel of ABS a lot more than pbt.

I have a heavily used GMK set and it feels very smooth you get used to the feeling as it shines but, if you get a fresh box of GMK key-caps you can feel the differences and that is texture. Not deal breaking they still feel nice to type on.

i use mostly MT3 ABS and PBT. the MT3 ABS has a rough texture on the scooped top, which i guess makes shine less obvious or maybe gives the impression of delayed onset of shine. that said, i rotate among different boards so maybe the ones i currently have don't have that much of shine yet

the few MT3 PBT sets i use have a rougher texture, with a kinda powdery feel on the fingertips which i understand some people don't like. im fine with using both

ABS plastic is a common thermoplastic polymer used for 3D printing, them to be easily injection molded and then subsequently recycled.

I dislike how ABS sets shine unevenly.

SA sets are generally quite smooth, but not slippery.

Worn ABS has a similar feel (SA are generally ABS anyway, just made smooth from the start).
