Title: Are Box Royals even worth it since they become clicky?
Post by: oofers on Sat, 29 May 2021, 13:08:12
Hi everyone,

after owning a cheap Chinese MX clone board for quite some time I've finally decided to build a custom keyboard.
In my search for switches, I came across BOX Royals which seem to fit my build pretty well, but according to reviews, they become clicky after a while.
So my question is, are they even worth it or should I consider getting a clicky BOX switch instead because while they may be louder, the sound should be more consistent.

Thanks!

No personal experience, but my understanding is that while they can become technically clicky the sound is very quiet and tends to be drowned out by the normal clack.

You could try Hako Royals instead, they're currently on sale anyway, though I don't know if they have the same problem long term. Or yeah, sure, go with the clickies. They're good too.

Unfortunately shipping from novelkeys.xyz would cost me more than the switches themselves. Do you know any other sites where they're on sale?

No, sorry. Just Novelkeys.

If you like or can handle softer springs, put softer springs into 62g Zeal Zilents, they will be as tactile or more (depending on how light the spring you use) and will not become clicky,  I'd recommend mid 50g springs. Unfortunately this is not a cheap option.

Note this trick does not work on most switches, possibly not even all Zeals.

I have them in my board now. They are great but my biggest complaint is that some are clicky and some are not. I don't mind either way, but I just wish they were consistent. I tried giving the clicky ones more love at the lubing station, but they still remain clicky. Otherwise they have an interesting and unique sound, and I like them.

I have only used a sample not a full board with BOX Royals, it a pretty nice switch, realitivly sharp bump and fair weight, but I personally don’t like the clicky sound, makes it feel cheap and broken imo.
BOX hako royal clear are pretty nice but very heavy, HP style, wonder how they’ll be with weaker spring, the sample doesn’t seem to get clicky sound, if that interests you.
