Title: Realforce mat swap; possible and easy?
Post by: mtl on Tue, 24 August 2010, 15:48:46
The Realforce 103U-UW has variable weight keys. It's a nice keyboard, but I have a problem with typos on low-force keyboards because I consistently hit keys off-center. A possible solution is to buy a Realforce 103UB (all 55g) and swap the rubber-dome mats. My goal is to end up with a white, all 55g Realforce (not a fan of the black-on-black keys).

I'm thinking this will solve my problem, since I can type cleanly on two keyboards with Cherry blacks, but lots of typos on Cherry brown and variable weigh Topre.

Does anyone know if the rubber mats on the 103U-UW and 103UB are compatible, and can be swapped?  I'm thinking it will be an easy mod, since this topic by Ripster (http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=Island:5697) says the keyboards are easy to open.

As a corollary, is anyone in the market for a new Realforce 103UB with a (slightly used) variable weight mat?

If you're going to go through all that trouble, just swap around a couple of the domes you have on the 'board you already own (say, the A key for Scroll Lock) and make them all 45g.  That, and you'll save some money.  I doubt people would be lining up to buy a Realforce without the warranty, especially since it would be "damaged goods."

To more directly answer your question, yes, you should be able to swap the domes.  The 103U-UW is the same as the other 103 varieties but have some additional goodies.

Thanks for the advice. Will report back the results if I go through with it.
