Title: MX Red G80-3000 Price
Post by: skartt on Thu, 26 August 2010, 03:05:16
Wow checked price of a MX red in china when i passed a mall, 125€ they charged.

This is more than double the price for a G80-3000 with MX black.

Where did you guys get your MX red? Was just this one shop bull****ting me or are they that expansive? (I am aware of a price difference between blue/black and brown so amybe red is even hgher.)

On ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/Cherry-G80-3494-Keyboard-Black-G80-3494-Linear-White-/270602674492?pt=PCA_Mice_Trackballs) 40 dollars... Shipping kills you though....

I'd go with the bull****ting option then..... ;-)

Regards.

The price does seem rather expansive. very few board members have red cherry's because of this, also scarcity most likely affects the price.

The one on eBay is g80-3494Hbla
Now consider that :
Red DS escape-caps from Signature Plastics cost 1.50 each +shipping ..
And that the original Cherry DS's are about twice as thick
and aren't made any more .. (or at least aren't available on Western market)

I'm not saying this is a "cheap" board, but considering what you get
and comparing with the Chinese shop-price it can't be called unreasonably expensive .
The guy in HongKong will mark your item as "gift" btw ..

NO, that one is not doubleshot. Didn't you read Imnop's post?

There is/was a 3484 which had doubleshots, but it didn't have nkey rollover.

The form factor number has nothing to do with keycap type.  If it has an "H," it's double-shot, if it's an "L," it's Lasered.  The one she posted had "L" in product code, thus lasered.

The original price was closer to $150, this $172 stuff is bunk, but I guess some are enjoying their reds.

Well, that cherry red board looks reasonable next to the foo' that is trying to sell the irocks cherry browns for $1999 (http://cgi.ebay.com/I-ROCKS-KR-6230-BK-Cherry-MX-Mechanical-Keyboard-New-/250606444723?pt=PCA_Mice_Trackballs&hash=item3a594ee0b3)

I got a G80-3494-LYCUS2 today (for around 800 RMB) and well just impressed about the difference to the mx black. I can hardly imagine to go back to black now :/.

Now i have to write diatec and costar about a filco tenkeyless with cherry mx red!

Hmm is there an easy way to mod a filco mx black with mx red switches? (link to guide appreciated!)

puhh opened my filco and well need to desolder the mx blacks. they are mounted on a metal plate so my plan to simply open the modules and swap springs was a little bit optimisitic (not too familiar with soldering).

Post by: washuai on Sat, 04 September 2010, 03:07:24
well, you might have ended up soldering, either way.  However, plate mounted is more difficult.  At least it is just platemounted and doesn't include LEDs on top of it.  Odds are high, I'm going to find myself modding a Deck 82.  I'll probably go to a hackspace, where I can get some mentoring/assistance, though, when I get around to this.

in comparison the cherry is kind of easy to open and presents all mx switches in a convenient way for salvaging.
Okay i overlooked that cherry solders 4 pins and filco only 2 :).

Where can I find an article on doubleshot vs. not doubleshot? I have not idea what doubleshot mean, nor did I care when I was buying my keybards. Is there an advantage of having doubleshot keycaps?

Sure, check the key wiki (http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=All+About+Keys).
Basically, doubleshot improves key feel since they're thicker and maintains really nice legends throughout the life of the key cap.

the price in China market is about 1000 RMB for a cherry 3494, but it would be a little bit cheaper on taobao.

$118 US.  Not bad.  Of course I'd have to travel to China first.

Cherry Swapping Guide - just put a blue or brown Cherry MX spring in (http://translate.google.com/translate?js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=1&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fmy3c.com%2FD5%2Fviewthread.php%3Ftid%3D4625%26extra%3D%26page%3D1&sl=auto&tl=en).  Not sure of cheap donor keyboards in China.

we think the difference of Cherry black and red is just the spring and the collor of the switch.

when u come plz let me know.  :tea:

It is, and that's actually a huge difference, for those of us that don't like heavy switches.

I'm not really sure of what you meant, though, since I answered to the "just".

it's really nice congratulations. KBC has a set of Red Keycaps (http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=5586135963). I think it would be a nice touch on the TenKeyLess.

Been in touch with someone from cherry in the UK, he is a charming chap. If it is one of you guys, shout up!

I asked him why they were only available in Asia, seems we aren't geeky enough!

Quote
The red version, I believe, was simply only ever intended for the Asian marketplace. If you look on the Internet, you’ll find that most of the ‘keyboard geeks’ (for want of a better term) are in Asia and for some odd reason, seem to really like our keyboards. I think this is because all they see coming out of the Asian factories, are simple membrane keyboards that are cheaply made and want something a little more substantial….coupled with the fact that some of them want to replicate our products  in their own market no doubt! The red key-stemmed version is designed more for gamers, apparently and has a slightly different force/travel than on any other version, but has never been produced in a UK layout – in fact, I believe it’s only available in two language variants – both with over-printed ‘Asian’ characters of some form – not sure whether they’re Korean/Chinese/Japanese or which layout, but based around a US 104 key. If we get enough orders, we can get them produced in UK layout – however, to raise the order with the German factory, means an order of at least 135pcs (3 boxes)!!

Geekhackers are very worthy.

Quote
The Keyboard Company (Bruce Whiting), who’s also a reseller for Filco. Bruce recently got an order for a large quantity (200,000pcs) of red stemmed MX modules that we’re waiting to supply – I can only guess that someone else is entering the market producing keyboards with our red switches, so look out!

20 Euros is a good price for that keyboard. I already have two of them in black and shipping will not make the deal great for me, unfortunately.
