I use onions almost every day in a wide range of dishes, to the point that I almost take them for granted.

Leeks can be great but require more work and imagination, and are more like show stars than backstage workers. What annoys me most is that they are often full of sand and need to be washed, that is a pain. And then there is the decision of how many of the outer leaves can be rendered palatable by your process. Recipes like these are fairly labor-intensive but yield good results.

I sometimes cook a leek soup for my family, but always add cheese, it makes it really tasty.
Prefer onions and spring onions.
