Yes, it's safe and it works. There will be a fine gray ash left at the bottom that you will want to vacuum out.
The smell will be terrible.

Do it when the house is otherwise cool and you'll be fine. Otherwise your A/C may struggle to keep up. My parents have been using this feature as long as I can remember and I've been continuing the tradition for the last 15 years without issue.

It's a good way to cleaned stained trays as well. Just be warned that they may warp.
