Title: So I am going to buy a Filco
Post by: gun_sl1nger on Wed, 01 September 2010, 00:38:29
I have 2 HHKBP2 and a Realforce 87u (which doesn't really get used) plus I have a Deck 82 in Red that I use for gaming.

Yet I feel I need another keyboard.

It needs to be quiet. I have a baby down the corridor (10 months old) and a wife that threatens to kill me should I wake said baby with incessant typing. Typing normally takes place on the Deck as I do that in between gaming when I get the chance (which is infrequent at best).

I really want a Cherry Blue Board but I know that Blue = Noise

I don't want Cherry Black. The Deck is Cherry Black and I want to try a different switch.

Any advice appreciated.

Browns?; tactile, non-clicky.

Though your Topre/HHKB should be quite aside from the "thocking" of the space bar. Maybe break out the 87U, you did say you don't use much.

Blues are hard to describe without being in person. A lot of times microphones amplify it noisily or amplify noises not normally heard. Loud for someone tapping them down all the way to the bottom is noticeable, but when typed on properly they aren't extreme though if your situation is that bad then the blues could echo through.

Although not as loud as blues, the Filco browns at least can be a tad loud if you bottom out. It seems like they are louder because of the metal plate. Not sure what the noise differences are between metal plate browns and pcb mounted.

Of course, the Topre keyboards you currently have are miles better than anything with browns.

There is no way to fix the problem on your current board, however depending on when you purchased it originally we may be able to work out an exchange for an Ice. Please email us at technicalsupport@deckkeyboards.com for further info.

if you purchased your Deck 82 Fire in 2009 you might be able to trade your Deck 82 Fire for a Deck 82 Ice because the controller on the Deck 82 Fire is bad.

That's why I bought a 55g one, if I didn't, it would be stealing too much brown time. :P

Plate mounted blue cherrys such as the filco are hecka loud.  PCB mounted blue cherries (g80-3000LSCRC) are somewhat quieter, the bottomout noise is maybe 25% as loud, the click still clicks however.

You can always go brown cherries, again i would recommend PCB mounted brown cherries for noise purposes.  Consider the ricercar spos if you want a compact layout, or get the MX 11800 and cut part of it off like in my sig, "compaq 84u" link.

I prefer cherry browns to topres, I might be an odd duck, but I have sold the two topre boards I have owned.

Maybe I will just sell the Realforce 87u and get an 86u.

I forgot to mention that my wife will occasionally use the PC for work etc and can't type on an all black keyboard.

Is there some significant difference between the 87 and 86?

Is there much of a market for the 87u?

Did you get the all-55g or variable weight one?

Variable weighted version

I'd trade it for an 86 if it is basically the same board.

You probably have point there, but I got 3 hours sleep last night due to a crying baby so I may have missed it.

Do you still use the one (87u) you modified?

Also you have a lot of posts geekgirl.

I have only 27

I think we should propagate the myth that ripster is a lady, to confuse new forum members for entertainment's sake.

I was referring to the avatar. Which I am pretty sure is 'geekgirl'.

I have lurked a long time. Err that doesn't sound right, I meant loiter, nope that makes me sound like a miscreant.

Anyway you get the picture.

You do have a slippery spacebar though.

This reminds me, I seriously need to go to Maker Faire next year.  I keep forgetting it happens here.  I think I get distracted by the other cons in May.
