Title: Most you ever spent on a keyboard?
Post by: Phaedrus2129 on Thu, 02 September 2010, 15:33:24
What's the most you ever spent on a single keyboard?

My highest would be $35 for my G80-8200. Everything else has either been cheaper or free (XArmor was free, for instance).

Bought it while I was in Japan at Cleverly, along with a 30g RealForce:

Its the ¥49 700 (cheapest it's available at from retailers).

The manuals seem like they're printed from an inkjet printer (a lot of stuff is included). And the driver disk is a burned Maxell disc.

Christ. I thought getting a HHKB Pro to Europe was expensive. On the other hand, the HHKB doesn't include drivers (which is good, because I'm running Debian Linux).

220,00$US + 34,00$US (shipping) for a Realforce 103UB 55g (Black) from EliteKeyboards. I will probably go up once I get the bill for customs and taxes!

Well, the drivers are only for the Japanese typing method under windows.

You don't really need any drivers. Though it does help, as the keyboard has 2 separate usb controllers...

If you're in the Netherlands, expect another 50 euros or so. My HHKB Pro 2 came up at 60 euros taxes and import fees.

$79 + $86 + $15 = $180.

for my Cherry Trackpoint mod (http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=Island:11420)

$79 for the Cherry 80-3000LQCDE-2 inclusive VAT and shipment from Germany to Sweden.
$86 for the Lenovo Thinkpad USB keyboard with Trackpoint.

Then I paid $45 for three IBM Trackpoint USB space saver keyboards. But one of them were broken (the one I used). So that would be 45/3 = 15.

Several in the $200-300 range (Realforces, A Rare Model M, Northgates).  Still, I've never paid more for a keyboard than I've spent on a yo-yo.

That is the reason why I choose to buy a Das here in Germany... If I had the possibility to buy an HHKB inside EU for a fair price, I would not wait a second.. but 300 Euro is way too much for a student like me atm...

So I spent 130 Euro on my Das Ultimate which was a lot of money, but I think it is worth it.

I don't buy keyboards new.  I spend more money in the form of time, tracking down keyboards at thrift stores and swap meets and cleaning/fixing them.  The most of direct cash I've paid for a keyboard was $10.  Assuming 1 hour of time = $10, I've probably spent at least $30 on each of my keyboards,  except for a couple that I bought unused in their original boxes.

what about the durability of the topre switches? when spending 200$+ for a keyboard it should last at least for 5 to 10 years (or even longer)... does the rubber "wear off"?

30 million presses, compared with 25 million for Model M style buckling springs, and ~20 million for tactile/click Alps and Cherries.

Apart from my most recent purchase - every keyboard that I have ever used or owned cost me pretty much nothing, except for frustration using the vast majority of those I have been forced to use through work and one reason why my model M takes a trip to work each Monday and comes home on Friday.

But last week old age took its toll and the M is now waiting for some serious servicing and I just spent £69 (that's $110 approx US) on a Cherry G80-3000 and the one thing that I have learned, as a beginner more or less in this keyboard world, is that keyboards are very personal and this is like changing your girlfriend - the old girlfriend knew exactly which buttons to press to keep me happy and the new girlfriend is... she isn't heavy enough and I don't like the way she slides around my desk and although I appreciate the switch technology she's using they are something I am debating whether I shall grow used to.

I know the G80-3000 is nothing by comparison with what some of you guys have spent on keyboard nirvana, but I am eye-ing it thinking I wonder if she will feel nicer if I pop it open and work out if I can add some ballast to make her seem more solid like steel plate or play dough with a sealing shield to make sure nothing shorts out.

You could use lead weights. Dense and non conductive. Should be able to fit some in the corners.

Not to be insulting to Cherry fans, but this thing sounds so hollow I would be amazed if there wasn't enough room to get a whole church roof hidden away inside... oh and having worked in a industry that uses lots of electricity and metal I can tell you that static electricity can and does travel across leads surface.

Up that to $200 for a lightly used 87U variable.  I can't wait to get it.

Lead weights & electricity - that's why Ripster plastic dipped his lead.

I think Razer might stick to Silver. Reason being, the average consumer would believe Gold to be better than Silver and trying to say otherwise might make Razer product sound like a rip-off not like they aren't already (with OP'd rubber dome keyboards).

Probably my Realforce 87U, was close to $300 iirc. The next most expensive is my Filco brown 87.

Been on these boards for more than a year now... The Realforce is worth the price. As for the Filco, wish I didn't buy it tbh.
