Title: Show your Unicomp custom keyboards!
Post by: SmallWalrus on Sun, 05 September 2010, 03:07:30
I was reading up this old discussion on Slashdot about Unicomp, and realised that they do actually offer quite a lot of customisation options if you'd call them, as compared to what is available from their little Yahoo store.

Just felt a bit curious as to what some of you guys might of ordered from them, care to show off some of your creative purchases? :)

Not sure if this counts because it's an IBM, but the coloured keycaps are from Unicomp.

I'm too cheap to order anything custom from Unicomp, but yesterday I learned from the mods section that their grey keys actually dye pretty well with RIT.

The dark brown looks almost black in this picture, but in person it looks chocolate-y, especially on the sides of the keycaps due to the glossy texture.

I'm jealous - how much did the keycaps cost in total if you don't mind me asking, because if I could make my Model M look like that I would be seriously happy.

Wow, slick!

Wait, are those 2 piece or 1 piece keycaps? Now I've gotten quite curious... do they make keycaps in IBM Lavender? Then I can have a black keyboard with black keycaps and IBM Lavender enter keys :)

The coloured ones are two part. The black keycaps (which came with the keyboard originally, I didn't get them from Unicomp) are single part. Unicomp doesn't make black printed keycaps (they will sell you blank ones though) because the pad printing process they used with the black keycaps failed miserably. The picture I have there is quite flattering, the keycaps are in quite poor condition if you saw them in person.

IBM, Lexmark and Unicomp made/make custom keycaps for various keyboards. Unicomp has a wide selection of coloured keycaps for their custom stuff. I'm not sure if I have ever seen any IBM Model Ms with purple/lavender keys.

They are $2 each for printed keycaps, with a minimum order of $10. I can't remember what the blank ones cost, they're cheaper than the printed ones though.

Blank keycaps. Didn't cost me a thing, just ordered it that way.

?

When Western civilization collapses, historians will look back at that song as the first sign of how it was falling apart...

(Btw, that song is definitely NSFW)

If I had the cash and had nothing else pressing to spend it on I'd get an Endurapro in black and gray with blank keycaps, programmed so the caps lock key is delete and the scroll lock key is caps lock.
