Title: 7U spacebar with split options
Post by: TheloniousDrunk on Sat, 06 November 2021, 00:50:50
I'm trying to work on a pet project that will be a one off build for myself. I want to do a 7u spacebar but with the option to have a split spacebar as well, since I'm currently using THE50 keyboard by lazydesigners and I've committed some layout habits to muscle memory with shortcuts using the split spacebar key.

I started to design it in KLE with a 3u and 4u as the other configuration but that seems like it'll run into issues on the PCB. The switch itself is like .8u centered on the key profile on the PCB and both the 3u and 4u keys would have stabilizers which would require mounts to the PCB which I'm fearing might interfere with the footprint of the center spacebar PCB.

Am I wrong or right about that? Is there a standard option of split spacebars that add to 7u?

The common way to split a 7u spacebar is afaik:
3u + 1u + 3u
2.75u + 1.5u + 2.75u

4u is a very uncommon keycap size, it's good to also consider what keycap sizes you'll have available

That's a good point, hadn't considered that and just assumed 3u and 4u would be standard.

Is there no common way to split 7u spacebar into two separate keys?

Not really, I've only ever seen 4u like once on some obscure china set
