Title: Indesisiveness about Brown vs Blue
Post by: IndesisiveAvocaodes on Mon, 13 September 2010, 00:17:22
Ive been on here a few times already and im about to make my first mechanical keyboard purchase, a Das Keyboard (thanks to the student discount).
The Das comes in two flavors, Blue and Brown. Blue is out of stock until god knows when, and Brown (the silent) is in full stock. I know Blue's are louder and require more weight(?) than the browns, but I think the noise may get to me, maybe...
Im coming from a Microsoft Media Keyboard 3000 which is far too quiet for my taste, and im hoping at least the browns will be louder for me. is there really a huge difference form someone who hasn't experienced the Gospel of the Mechanical Switch? It is He who wants me to make a purchase, but I dont want to forsake Him by choosing a switch I dont like. I'll be typing reports and playing videogames for hours on end about equally.

I am indecisive.

The brown is quieter, but it's nowhere near as quiet as the typical mushy dome keyboard. If you bottom out, as when gaming, the "silent" Das is pretty loud.

I think you'll find the noise of even the browns to be quite satisfying without being overbearing.

I think the brown switches are more all around (for typing and gaming) than any other swotch besides the topre

They look pretty square in shape to me.

I like this Swotch... err.. Swatch:

This sure is one of the hardest question to answer. They are completely different switches, offer completely different feel and produce completely different sound.  The best option would be to try them both, because that's the only way you'll know for sure. The reason I believe you should try both is that, if you have never tried any of them, you'll always be asking yourself what the other switch feel like.

That being said, they are both great switches, different but unique in their own ways. I am using blue Cherry at work and Topre/brown Cherry at home.

I see that you have always made your choice though.

Yep, the Das silent is "tap-tap-tap" without the high-pitched "click".  They're so light you might end up bottoming out naturally.

Takes a while.  Texas is a big state and they have to load up the horses.

after I have found out that my filco tenkeyless from GB ist "shipped" with Royal Mail Surface and not Airmail, the thing with the horses is not that unplausible... I think they send the package via horse-drawn carriage with a black-bearded coachman defending his load with cloak-and-sword... :fencing:

up to 2 weeks from Great Britain to Germany... aaah dammit ...

Dude doesn't even get a rifle or a crossbow?  Coach protection works best, when they can't get near the gear.  Coach protection makes for fun gaming, though.  (Assassin's Creed II, Red Dead Redemption).

I've been agonizing over this subject too, and without being able to try both, concluded that browns are for weak-fingered sissies that are probably also fat.  So I'm ordering a Filco blue as we speak.

Which brings me to the point of this post, which I originally tried to post in the Elitekeyboards forum but was denied hardcore by the forum permissions:

   Dear Elitekeyboards,

I'm pretty sure you don't go to heaven if your shopping cart resizes people's browser windows.

Sincerely,
A.F. Kitten

Everybody has been banned from the Elitekeyboards Vendor Subforum for excessive whining about shiny keys.

My spacebar is shiny.

I think "spacebar shiner" is an interesting insult to call someone.

No telling. what if they come and im not here what if someone steals it what if it brakes what if I dont like it what if they confiscate it because they MAY KNOW MY SECRET and if they know THAT they I will go back to the white doctors and they will put me IN THERE again and I wont be right anymore and worse I wont have my keyboard Im ok im ok I can hold myself together im not crazy like they said im not crazy just a few more days

My 87U was fedex and it didn't have any updates between the 9th and the 14th.  It was extremely annoying and not the experience I'm used to, but boy was I happy to see the update that it was indeed still out to be delivered on the expected day.  Oh, yours hasn't even gotten in motion yet?  I've had that take two days, from billing information to on the move, although I think that's usually UPS.

Well tomorrow noon its scheduled to come. Im scared of not liking the keyboard. Im worried the browns will be too silent. Oh god oh god. I just hope at least the browns feel better or are at least louder than a normal keyboard is.

So my Das Keyboard Silent came in today. What can I say? I love it! Even for silent its still louder than any keyboard ive owned. Its glossy and thats a bit of a turn off but at least it came with a small microfiber/velvet cloth. Its quite heavy and well built. Its quite expensive even with the 25% student discount. I see this as a keeper though. I think it could benefit from some macro keys or volume control but its quite an enjoyable experience thus far.

Im just surprised how loud this silent keyboard is. I bottom out on each key but thats just a habit ive normally gotten used to. Im scared to figure out how loud the Cherry Blue (standard) version is.

Great keyboard, definitely could be cheaper, like 60$'s cheaper. (Even though it seems like ~100$ is the standard for mechanical keyboards.)

Yes, indeed. This may not be the highly regarded Filco keyboards you guys know and love, but I never found something this fun to type on.

Nasty comments are my territory; only Monday - Friday, though.  I don't hang out here on the weekends; I have a real life.

Ripster's a little more subtle than I am.  That, and more visual.

So ive been using this keyboard for a while. Still lots of love for it. I just really wish there was some sort of volume control, or at least some media keys (believe it or not I actually used those things). Well, maybe there some sort of 3rd party "add on" that I can stick on the side with the 2 USB Ports. Apparently the lettering on these wear off after a few months, but I can't judge on that yet.

I think this keyboard will be here for a while, like my lovely Logitech G5 mouse.

why clean the board just after one week? .. just use a soft vacuum cleaner brush and suck the dust out of it ;)

Don't bother with cleaning the keyboard. It just takes up time and can damage the keycaps if you don't do it properly.

I never ever cleaned my keyboards and they all still work perfectly well. They aren't all that dirty either except for the one I spilled printer ink on a while ago.
