I am delighted to annouce the interest check for my third keyboard project, the CLS-3//88. The previous offerings (CLS-1//87 and CLS-2//65 - https://ori-club.com/collections/ori-classic-series) brought me absolute joy and also a fair share of headache, but I’ve always been priviledged with support from the community, and from friends who help me realize my vision.

The CLS-3//88 is the culmination of everything that I’ve learned so far (achievements and stumbles alike), so there will be signigicant changes in design and also in the way that the product is offered to the public, with the one and only aim of bringing the best experience possible. As always, I am excited to gather invaluable feedback that will guide me in refining the board in the coming months before the official launch.

DESIGN INSPIRATION

After CLS-2//65, I’ve been contemplating ways to add some extra “fanciness” to my following product lineup, without sacrificing the elements of elegance and balance that are consistently instilled in my designs. The name of the game is how to harmonize the newly introduced curves with the stable imagery of the Ori bird flying towards the Sun (but not too close lol), and make the whole execution effortless.

Effortlessness and simplicity

TECHNICAL CHANGES AND IMPROVEMENTS

Mounting and typing feel: I have adjusted the connection positions between the plate and the mount to reduce stiffness in some places. However, as soon as new prototypes are reevaluated. I'll tune in one more time.

Sound: A realistic sound, reflected by a brass

Board assembly: My goal this time is with the assembly method where you will assemble the daughter board in the final stages. The aim is that the pcb will no longer be pinched by wires - affecting the feel of typing.

Packaging: Custom box - In the process of designing and testing

SALE INFO

For the first time ever and likely moving forward, Ori products will be offered through in-stock raffles. While doing traditional group buys makes things a lot simpler in terms of mobilization and logistics, it also puts a considerable amount of pressure on fulfillment, which in certain cases during my previous runs, affected my ability to meet expectations.

Keeping things in-stock, while having a huge financial strain on…, allows me to work at my own pace, and most importantly, mitigates risks to my side instead of my customers.

PROGRESS UPDATE

The first unanodized prototype is already here, and my partners at Mechlovin’and I are inspecting design and assembly elements, before moving towards building and sound testing.

TO-DO LIST
Gather community feedback and work on actionable items
Typing and sound testing
Fine-tune the design and produce new prototypes

2//65 was a huge improvement from 1//87 to be very honest. Typing feel and sound was remarkably consistent on the 2//65 even with the bottom row alphas.

Can't wait for this to enter GB.

All the best bruce!

Like the other ORI boards, this one is beautiful, alas I have never managed to win a spot on any of them and I don't hold any hope of winning a spot on this one, but it will be beautiful.

I own CLS-1, and even though it has some issues, I like how it sounds, feels and looks. That said, my experience with this designer was pretty bad overall. So, even though I really like this design as well, I am a little cautious.

For the CLS-1, I wanted to buy extra pcb and plate, for which I emailed in the middle of November 2020 which they replied promptly. Similarly, I paid the invoice promptly as well. Then after that it was radio silence for a while. I initially tried to reach them on discord in September and October 2021 which they didn't reply. Then I mentioned about it in their discord which they replied mentioning some delays and issues, but sounded like things are moving. After that it was radio silence again even though they were promoting other stuff including this board. And in September 2022(disregarding couple of emails I sent that are never replied), I asked about the status, which they again replied mentioning some issues with the pcb order quantity being small, and then stopped conversation abruptly when I asked if CLS-3 pcb is going to be interchangeable(thinking that maybe they are going to send it with this board shipment). And eventually I messaged them asking for concrete day or refund 4 days ago, and no reply to that so far either.

Similarly, I believe a lot of people if not everyone from the CLS-1 are waiting for SS replacement parts, and questions about those are not getting answered in discord either.

So, I think it is very likely that if you win the raffle, you will get your board. But based on my experience, if you have any issue with your board, then you are doomed.

Edit: Took time, but I got refunded.

Absolutely beautiful design all around. I actually love the look of unfinished raw aluminum, but look forward to seeing what colors you’ll be offering this in as well. I may have missed if you mentioned this above, but I would greatly prefer a hotswap option if possible, but I understand if you don’t/can’t do that due to the limited run of these that you’ll be offering for sale.

Wishing you all the best with this & hope I end up getting one when it becomes available!

I really love the Ori design language but attention to detail/QC and communication as a result of that has definitely been lacking in their first two releases, which is a bit disappointing given the price and the fact that they are clearly trying to position themselves as a premium brand. Still holding out hope this will improve because I do really love the design of their boards and would like to support them.

Damn really beautiful board and design. A raw metal option like this proto would be amazing.

That said, I'm really hesitant to join if customer feedback from others stays the same and goes unanswered.

I’m overwhelmed by the interest shown in the form inputs. I truly appreciate all your feedback and constructive criticism.

The CLS-1 boards were manufactured locally because at that time, I believed that was the best way for me to be 100% involved. While it was a design that I’m absolutely proud of, there were quality issues with some parts that I’m still trying to amend by remanufacturing.

CLS-2 was a much better experience overall, but I’m aware that there are missteps to learn from and improvements to be made.

I’m an independent designer and intend to remain that way, and I fully understand that is no excuse for inadequacy. I have learned so much from the previous runs, and am grateful for that learning opportunity. That’s why I have implemented some key changes for the CLS-3 run:

- Hiring an assistant to support with administrative/operational tasks

- Switching to the in-stock model where I’m in much more control of quality assurance and fulfillment timeline.

I’m analyzing the data gathered from the IC responses and will post an update soon.

Prototype V2 is ready. Since it's a prototype, I can't anodize with a custom color yet.
I tried several colors to make sure the base color would work with this design. Nothing is certain, I would probably build on these bases and do a separate anodizing bath for each batch.
Prototype is almost complete, but I also listen to change some more details, depending on taste
- Depth of the inside of the keyboard.
- Refine plate
- Precise shape of rubber feet
- Add custom foam / or drawing

I continue to listen to adjust the prototype properly.
So I would be very grateful if you would continue to give me more comments on the IC form.
