Title: Homekey tactiles
Post by: Konrad on Thu, 16 September 2010, 13:59:08
I don't know what these are called. Bumps? Bars? Nubs? Fnords?

I mean the little raised bumps usually located on the homekeys and the Numpad 5.

Well, I think I'd prefer having them on all of my homekeys, not just FJ or DK or whatever. And having one on my down-arrow key would be nice. Maybe I'd like to place 'em on my 1 and 0 keys, or every even-number or whatever (yeah, I'm still weak on touch typing top row numbers after years and years; Numpad is where it's really at). Maybe I'd even like different shapes/types, lol.

1) So what are these tactile-haptic thingies properly called?
2) Is there any real "official" specification which describes their use? They didn't exist in my learning-to-type (on a selectric) days.
3) Can blank keycaps typically be ordered with or without them, as desired? Or do you just get what they give you?
4) Does anyone have any sort of "add keycap bumpies" mod?

I felt such a sense of unease after reading that sentence. Not sure why...

They used to be indents, I believe, for a while.

For example my DisplayWriter and G81-1800 both have deeper cups, rather than the bumps.

Could it have been the "Fnords" at the end that made you uneasy?
lol

I don't think my typing speeds would improve if I spent all my time fondling perky homekeys.

Hmmm ... indents.  Maybe time for a little Dremel action.  Don't indents get filled with nasty crud?

Hmmm.  I don't like the look of those things.

The countersunk pinhead mod looks worthy.  I'm going to try out a variation of welly's velcro mod and braille-inspired stickercaps.  I found things like this (http://www.uniquetextures.com/00548.htm), order by the sheet to cut up as desired.

I replaced my F and J keys with numpad 5 keys from those doubleshot MY7000s. They have a nub in the center. =D

I replaced the 5 key on mine with the displaced F key. F for five.

This SPOS has keycaps from four keyboards on it, plus four custom keys. :p

Pshaw!  Number rows are obsoleted.  Leftover Qwerty madness.  Ain't much good for anything beyond switching weapons.

Numpad is faster, easier, better, sexier, excellenter.

If the numpad - along with the cursor/edit keys - were leftsided on the keyboard it would be perfection, given right-handed mouse use.

(Yeah, I know about Zboards and "modular" Microsoft boards ... this one cool feature is just not enough to outweigh their combined ****ness, so I'll keep waiting and hoping for a perfect keyboard product.)

Bleh. Futuba switches. Had those on some ancient Datatrain keyboard that I always hated, I mean I really hated that piece o shyte ... keys were too stiff, tactile clickety-point felt like the "wrong" place, and the keys pushed up way too aggresively. Kinda loud too, didn't bug me but didn't make me popular at home/work.

I'm gonna wiki around, see if these icky switches can be cherried. If so, and if the Sejin has decent NKRO then I'll grab one. Form factor looks almost ideal.  (I personally prefer big backspace/backslash keys over L-shaped enter, easier for coding.) ;)

The key switches seem pretty nice to me, not stiff at all. The small backspace drove me nuts - if not for that, I would probably use it as a primary keyboard.

I'll sell it to you for cheap, if you want :)

There is that modular cherry switched Mac keyboard (http://www.fentek-ind.com/kbmmacbub.htm).  I don't see the keypad there at fentek, but DSI  (http://www.notestation.com/kb-modmac-umodularmackeyboard.htm)sells them with the other modular pieces (like numberpads).  I think I'd contact either place, before placing an order, to get specifics on what pieces are available with what switches, etc.
