[IC] Martingale
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Martingale is a PCB top-mounted, 60-percent keyboard designed to be comfortable to type on and relatively affordable, and the aim is to maintain quality standards often found in much higher end boards in the hobby. The construction of the case is simple, and consists of three parts: Top and bottom case, and a daughterboard mounting accent. Nearly every single design element is functional in purpose, with the exception of the side profile and bezel sizes.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Key features and specifications:
Please refer to the image below.
[attachimg=5]
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Prototyping:
As of now, the board has had four prototypes over two rounds of prototyping, with the fifth and final prototype on its way to me. All images of the prototypes can be found in the following Imgur link: https://imgur.com/a/1r6CReq (the green prototype is the most recent one). Also including three images below.
[attach=3] [attach=4] [attach=2]
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Inspirations:
1) The internal stepped geometry in the bottom case is inspired from the Bias TKL with the permission of the designer himself (Baionwave^TM lets go!). I found it useful to implement low typing angle and front height while also retaining some heft, leaving space for the pcb to flex without bottoming out.
2) The side profile is inspired from the now famous Matrix 8xv2.0 and 6xv2.0 series of boards.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Group buy info: (Please scroll for latest updated GB info)
1) Price target: $250 + shipping and taxes (would be about $290-310 including VAT for most countries.). Will include carrying case.
Best case: sub 250 USD including carrying case. Worst case: sub 300 USD excluding carrying case. Looking at around 300 USD (slightly more with carrying case).
Please understand that these are only estimates from quotes I have received from manufacturers with some educated guesses made. The actual price could be less or more depending on number of units. I will update this when I have more information!
2) Vendors: None as of now. Will be approaching vendors soon! ClickClack.io will be the global vendor
3) GB Date: Depends on how talks with vendors go, but targeting Q3 2022. GB month will be December 2022
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Questions?
1) Why are you calling this the Martingale?
I have decided to name my boards on concepts from probability theory. Why? Those who know, know
2) You say this is plateless, but will a plate be included anyway?
I plan to include an Alu 5052 plate by default.
3) What about plate files?
Any tray mount/gummy o-ring mount plate like the ones in your Tofus, Bakenekos, and Unikorns will be compatible with the board. So there is not much point in providing plate files since it has no mounting points,
4) Will the board be compatible with standard PCBs?
No. The pcb has mounting tabs which are specific to the Martingale, so no aftermarket pcb will be compatible. However, I will consider releasing gerber files of a modified Bakeneko pcb with the mounting tabs added and other minor modifications made (the GB itself will use a proprietary PCB, unless there is a change of plans for some unknown reason).
5) Do you have any experience running group buys before, or any manufacturing experience?
I have never run a group buy before, and this is my first Interest Check! However I have designed and manufactured many an engineering product back in undergrad (automotive suspensions, chassis, etc.). This my first time designing parts where aesthetics are as important as functionality, and it has been a learning experience!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks:
Maelk has been helping me with the pcb. Thanks Maelk!
This would not have been possible without the support of some of the lovely folk in the Indian Mechanical Keyboard Community (IMKC), and many more scattered across the world of overpriced rectangles. You guys know who you are! Thanks!

UPDATE 1: Added interest check form.
UPDATE 2: Added discord server link.
UPDATE 3: Added vendor, pricing and GB month.
-
Looks like a really nice project. Nice job :)
-
Reserved!
Can't wait to see the final proto. GLWIC!
-
This seems really promising - looking forward to this! Any chance of a proto sound test?
-
Would love to see a large rear weight given this is one of few pcb mount 60’s at least within recent memory, but either way looks like solid project. Good luck with it!
-
Waiting for the final proto and the GB to start. Excited!
-
Looks really nice, glwic
-
It's simple on the outside but you can tell a lot of work went into the inside, looks great!
-
great work elven.
GLWIC!
-
right side USB port on keyboards LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO really solid project at a really good price point. Looking forward for more!
-
Looks very neat and tidy. I'd like to try one.
-
Looking really promising, elven. Cant wait to get my hands on it! :)
-
Looks fantastic! Consider hhkb
-
great project
+1 for hhkb
-
i agree with the hee hee kay bee but this looks good for the price glwic :D
-
So happy seeing more PCB mount keyboards, especially 60s :thumb:. Loving that green as well.
-
Thanks everyone for the support!
Also realized that I’m an idiot and didnt upload layouts. Will do it over the weekend, but you can expect the typical 60% fare. I really wanted to do the og HHKB layout with the larger right hand side blocker, but it likely wont happen. Will mostly include just the regular HHKB option along with WK and WKL.
Also regarding sound tests, they will take some time but I wanna make sure its a representative sound test. I personally do not have a recording setup of any sort, but will ask some friends to record it! Wont happen before end of month though.
Thanks again!!

true hhkb is amazing but 7u hhkb is good too :thumb:

Great looking board, price estimate seems very nice. Hope this board can come to fruition. GLWIC!

Looks lovely.
All the best Elven.

This looks very promising, good luck with IC!
-
I see you have poured a lot of effort into this. Everything looks great.
I don't see you mention which case colors will be available during the groupbuy, therefore I hope a nice, light shade of grey/blue/lilac makes it ;D
Hope there will be an Asia/South East Asia vendor.
GLWIC!
-
Ne gibbers avail
GLWIC

+1 HHKB
i'm soldd
-
Looks really nice, I love that green. I much prefer ceneterd usb on 60%, i think having it on either side really messed up the symmetry.
I'm not really a topmount guy, I've also never tried plateless. At the target price i'd be down to try :thumb: GLWIC
-
very nice, hope it goes well
-
It is more beautiful inside. Amazing work! Looking great

GLWIC!
You are right about no mention of colours, and its simply because I havent decided them yet. Its still an IC so the process of testing out colours with the manu is not yet done. I will be updating the IC soon with a form asking colour, layout preferences etc.
Also vendors TBD 😭. Everything is TBD and will update as soon as I have more information!
-
Top-Mounted Plateless Master Race represent!
This looks great OP. GLWIC.

Added an IC form! Here is the link again in case people miss it: https://forms.gle/ACUHENyUnSGsSmBg8

Great job Elven! This is so clean, can’t wait to get my hands on one.
-
Super glad to see that 7u hhkb will be offered. Def will be joining this gb, especially for this price!

I'm in
-
From the IC form, it seems like a lot of people like PP plates! Will likely try out a standard 60% PP plate and see what its like.
-
The amount of work you put into this is shining brightly, my man - such a polished product. The praise here is well deserved!
Cheers!

-
Hell yeah what a hot looking board! Another HHKB +1 here
-
I was looking for 60 wkl top mounting. I'm in.
-
Not a 60% user but had to leave a comment for the awesome naming. Maybe consider a Supermartingale in TKL in the future. :thumb:

I still don't get it who is Martin Gale?

So the keyboard is named after the guy who invented probability? I guess that makes sense.

Uploaded a smaller image.

not a fan of the big chamfers on the keycap side, but aside from this the specs are perfect imo, will watch and see how this project goes. GL! :thumb:
-
Looking good so far and curious to see what the color choices end up being. I feel lighter colors would look good on this board for some reason.
-
Looks good!
-
Looks promising!
Any discord so we can follow updates?

Thanks everyone again!!
Any discord so we can follow updates?
Discord server soon! In the process of setting it up. Will update the IC with the link :)
-
interest piqued, would definitely be down for a hhkb unit.
glwic!

Love PCB mount boards and wish they were done more often. In for one 100%

i do love plateless board's but wouldn't this have potential issues with the PCB mounting point's snapping off in the far future or is the PCB just more durable than i am imagining in my head

Hi. Not at all actually! I’ve been typing on these for quite a while now, and even when I apply full downward force, the mounting tabs are far away from snapping off. Under normal typing pressure, it is not of any concern.
I appreciate you pointing it out though since I’m sure others probably had the same concern!
-
Quality IC, 250 usd would be an amazing price! Keen to hear a sound test :)
-
Looking good! Best of luck with this.
-
Hi,there.
Does pcb support iso layout
-
Hi,there.
Does pcb support iso layout
Hello! Yes it will support ISO. I havent uploaded the layout since bottom row layout options arent 100% decided yet.
-
so nice!
Cheers man!
-
looks great, am addicted to low front height/angle board these days
-
Looking good at a great price! GL
-
Hope the gb does well. Can see you put a lot of effort into this
-
I really hope alu won't be included by default.
First, I hope it helps drive/keep the price down.
Two, I love the 7V, but I was not a fan of the "floating plate above pcb mounted keeb" sound profile.
Either way, I'm watching this IC closely. Good luck my dude.
-

I have 2 plateless boards (Timberwolf and 7V), still going strong.
You are right, PCBs are more durable and flexible than most people think.
Apart from that, there is a threshold of distance (not sure how far) a PCB will flex before it snaps. The tiny amount of space inside a keyboard will not let that happen.
-
Great looking board at an attractive price. Following along now. :)
-
Looks great elven :thumb:
-
I love it! I'm in!
-
Thanks for the support people! Really hoping I can provide more consistent updates on the project. Next update would be about the final layout options (mainly with regards to spacebar), and hopefully some news on vendors!
-
Excited for the next update.
EU vendor would be very nice.
-
Would appreciate a SEA vendor. Preferably Zionstudios or Rebult.
Looking forward to more updates.
-
Man if this gets offered in WK and that green I might need to buy a few.

Ah a fellow man of culture. What keycaps would you use on em?
-
mounting looks good, price is awesome and finishing on the proto looks solid. very eager for more information, awesome project!
-
Nice and clean board with a great price!
-
please dont, my wallet cant take much more

Sad to see it ended up being worst-case scenario.
-
Sad to see it ended up being worst-case scenario.
Nothing is firm yet. This estimate includes vendor fees!

I was really considering this as a daily driver if it were 250-ish... I think I'll convince myself to buy it either way, but please keep us informed!
-
Sad to see it ended up being worst-case scenario.

Hoping its lower, considering Nascent was a 65% that was $290 w/carrying case. Also, it had cerakote, which is more expensive than ano. But I understand vendors are probably the reason for this, hope it does well.
-

I am happy that you have ever thought of the true (6u spacebar) HHKB layout.
It's a pity that won't happen in this run.

Any updates on how it's going?
Yes! Am in the process of talking to vendors, and that can be a bit slow. However, I expect those details to get finalized soon!

There are some really interesting boards coming up soon^tm which will have the true hhkb layout (Baul's type-B, and the Matrix 6xv3.0 Falcon come to mind). You should check them out!

Thanks for the pointers.
With closer to the left F & J homing keys, a left shifted spacebar with 6u or even shorter at 5.5u is an optimized design - I think you might be one of the rarer designers who are aware of the value of the true hhkb layout.
I cannot locate "Baul's type-B"
About Matrix, they have beautiful and interesting designs, and they execute their projects brilliantly. However, I prefer designs that are a bit more minimal than their usual design language. Would be very excited if OWLab (or Qwertykey) or RAMA have a true HHKB option in their future projects, they all have not-so-overwhelming design language (just my personal taste) and their pricing are reasonable.

I don't think there's a public IC for it yet but you can find info in Baul's discord - https://discord.com/invite/v2sWm88

please offer the proto green for public sale, it looks stunning. Imagine GMK Taiga on it

bumping up cause there have been updates :P

Cool project, also that proto green :-*

What are the final colours?
Apologies if you think I ignored, was just waiting on these haha. Final colours:
[attachimg=1]
Also there will be an internal engraving, the one you see.
GB should be in Mid-March 2023. Should have protos in all colours before then, which is when I will update this thread properly.
Thanks for staying tuned guys!

that teal/green is INSANE. definitely picking one up in that color.

Did this ever run in March?

Did this ever run in March?
No, still waiting :-)
-
We wait
-
My watch begins.
-
Bumping this because we're finally going into Group buy! Will create a GB page very soon.
-
Oh noes! That's like 4x HHKBs at the same time; Tempo, Kei, Brutal V2, and Martingale. And hopefully Lily right around the corner maybe :-D
I can't justify that, now I'll have to get picky.
And there's the MM-HHKB as well, though I won't get that because they've got too many GBs running at the moment. I'll wait until they fulfill Class 60 at least.

Did I read the update correctly? This board will run for only the last week of September?

It will be open for a while (like a month, or till the units cap gets hit).
-
Planning to join for a green one, but I can’t decide on WKL or HHKB. Did you ever have a HHKB top made?
-
So much hype around this board, yet is appears so simple, doesn't even have a weight. What am I missing?
-
So much hype around this board, yet is appears so simple, doesn't even have a weight. What am I missing?
For me it's well photographed prototypes, the unique brass accent on the DB area, the low profile, the low angle, the way the PCB is top mounted, the unique green color, and the classic side profile. I am hesitant also because we know this is his first group buy. At least it's limited to 300 units. 100 would probably make me more comfortable. I have recently been involved in failed group buys from Mechs & Co, Noxary, and MKB. I've also had 3 keyboard group buys turned into vaporware over the past decade with a loss of about a grand. It's a coin toss. But I like the design a lot. :p
-
So much hype around this board, yet is appears so simple, doesn't even have a weight. What am I missing?
Aesthetically it looks really nice, and there is some complexity here with the machining, not saying this a jane v2 in terms of complexity but I wouldn't say it's basic.
Is it worth 249? ehhhhhh I guess. It does contain a lot of stuff (2 pcbs and a case which adds to cost) but it is more basic and a pretty large moq considering this hobby which drives down price. Personally I would say it's worth it assuming quality control is very top notch. But you're not getting a good deal (not saying it is overpriced at all, just regularly priced)
-
So much hype around this board, yet is appears so simple, doesn't even have a weight. What am I missing?
This piqued my interest because it is:
- Plateless
- Top Mount
- Low Front Height
I never thought I'd get all three of them in a 60% layout, so I guess you could say it caters to this niche.
-
Simple outside but complex inside - the low profile design & unique pcb top mount is not something everyone can pull off with such precision.
