Title: Anyone know about O-rings on Redragon keyboard?
Post by: fohat.digs on Fri, 22 April 2022, 21:51:39
I got one very cheap and it seems like a decent little keyboard - completely different from what I customarily use - but I might find a place for it.

The lights can be turned off, the keycaps feel OK but they look truly hideous. The switches have ribs on them, can they take O-rings?

Thanks

I bought a redragon as my first mechanical keyboard.  For the price,  it was a great introduction.

FTMP, IDK about your more technical questions because there are many models & some are closer to custom specs than others,

One I bought later is not even mechanical but a uniform profile, flat (like laptop) key.

Today,  I don't consider the outemu switches to be that great.  They are totally service-able and anyone but an enthusiast wouldn't mind. Still,  that's just the board I have & there are many more options.  Mine was pretty inexpensive.

This the K-552 KR and it has red Outemu switches. Since all my keyboards are large and noisy I thought that something small and quiet with a very light touch would be a nice change.

Years ago, my son and I added O-rings to his black Cherry switches, and it was easy. These switches appear to have parallel "ribs" and I am wondering whether this would prevent O-rings from working properly. Instead of looking like * + * they look like * (+) *

I wanted to use square brackets but they have another function.

It's an introductory keyboard for a lot of people.

They frequently have OUTEMU Blue, which are a more animated MX Blue.

The keycaps do feel okay, but have hideous fonts, as you've noticed.

Look on-line for various mods people have performed. If it's recent enough, you can replace the switches with other OUTEMU switches, or maybe even the rest of standard MX.

I've seen people repaint cases, add foam, change keycaps. You can make aesthetic changes to the board and use improved keycaps.

It's about equivalent to one of those 2017 GMMK TKLs in terms of typing experience. Since you can get one for like $30 USD, it's a cheap basis for better switches and keycaps.

the ribbing means it has a "box stem" which just provides the company to brag about "dust resistant" and other stuff to people who don't know much about it and just want a good keyboard. Although yes it can use any keycap just don't put the o-ring around the ribbing

Thank you. Caps and O-rings are likely the only mods I will ever do here, this is not a keyboard that I want to invest too much time and money into.

The O-rings I installed before went onto the socket shaft on the underside of the key cap, I was unclear as to whether they would fit inside the "box". I like the thinnest and softest O-rings I can get.

So, will O-rings work with Outemu red switches? Or will have to risk buying some of them to find out?

Yes the o-rings will work with those switches, I have used them with a board w/ their Blue counterpart before I moved my son over to the Coolermaster Pro S I had before modding my iKBC Poker II and NK65.

Thank you! They will cost a lot more than the $4 that I paid for the keyboard.
