Brutal V2 - 65%

2019 saw the birth of the CannonKeys Brutalist series keyboards - an accessible keyboard series inspired by the architecture of the same name which made CNC custom keyboards readily available for all as a constant in-stock item.
Fast-forwarding three years, the Brutal V2 series joins the Brutalist family with its first member - carrying the DNA of the original forward while still applying a fresh take on the visuals and performance.

True To Its Name

With its bold, blocky visuals combined with sleek angular accents, the Brutal V2 series brings brutalist-inspired massive design in a form that blends well into any desk environment.
Raw cast-metal internal weights finish off the brutalist look while providing acoustic improvement and stability during use.

Brutal Looks, Solid Performance

The Brutal V2 series implements a single-sided gasket mount which provides extreme comfort alongside acoustics that combine calmer gasket-mount and proven top-mount characteristics.
With a simple build process and automatic plate alignment, the Brutal V2 series ensures that your build comes out top-notch regardless of experience.

Tracing the Origins

Just like the original Brutalist series boards that came before it, the Brutal V2 series carries the goals of being an accessible option while offering versatility for all stages of the hobby.
Opt for a hotswap PCB for a solder-free and safe assembly that can be finished rapidly and modified easily, or choose the solderable PCB for a permanent assembly with any of the possible layout choices.

Q&A

Q: Will this replace the original Brutalist V1 series?
A: Nope - it will still remain as a further accessible option and a proven top-mount design, while the V2 series will carry a slightly higher price tag due to its more complex design.

Q: Does this mean the other form factors are coming in the Brutal V2 design?
A: Yes, but no timeline as of now.

Q: Are the weights really cast metal? They look like brass in the photos.
A: The prototypes were made with brass; the production units will carry the cast weights.

Q: Are all the names being unified to Brutal V2 - something?
A: Yes - we decided it’s more convenient when referring to the family and reducing the names you have to memorize.

Q: Will there be a WKL variant for the 65%?
A: no

Q: Who designed this?
A: me

Looks like a nice refresh to the lineup. Can I know which metal will be casted into weights?

GLWIC!

Im a sucker for two tone keebs, that proto looks really nice. Gives the brutalist line a bit more style while staying true to the brutalist aesthetic.

Absolutely love how this looks but I have to ask, will there be a choice for external weights? GLWIC

Love the two tone look! Hoping that this carries throughout future brutal boards.

A little bummed the Brutal series is jumping on the gasket bandwagon. I always likes how the Brutal series typed with simple top burger mount. Honestly, I know gaskets are less fiddly if done correctly, but this doesn’t feel like an evolution of the Brutal series.

The move to a daughterboard and the addition of weights would have been enough for me.

Now the only differentiators will be the price (if they can maintain Brutal pricing) and styling.

I do like the super low front height though. Very nice.

It's really nice but I think it would be better if the Ai03 logo was on the backplate/bottom next to the CK logo imo.

I kind of agree but ai03 has, in general, done a good job of keeping case acoustics intact with gasket mounts so it's worth seeing how it turns out.

Very weird sentiment that a gasket mount isn't an absolute evolution of a burger mount...Gasket mount is better in every way. More flex, more consistency, more all all-around better.

If you don't think so, lets hear the arguments to a couple orthodontic rubber bands making a keyboard better.

It's interesting to see the conversation of top mount vs gasket strip/isolation. We think both mounts are very different, and both have their own benefits.

This mounting style maintains the feel of isolation gasket, but for a sound profile it leans towards a hybrid of top + gasket. Very interested to see how people like it.

Like said in the top post, v1 isn't going anywhere. So if you really prefer top mount v1 is going to continue being on the site for now.

I like the aesthetic of this - keeps the old Brutal feel but with a touch more flare. Surprised it is using the Brutal name for a 65% though.

The two tone goes hard and this looks way better than og design, especially the back side. A medium grey, instead of silver, top and black bottom would be super cool. Interested

didn't like it a ton at first but the more i come back to this, the more the design grows on me. love the 2-tone for this board as well

Please fix this part!

Those straight lines look really weird. Add a chamfer or big fillet to them, or remove them and make the back more uniform.

Gotta disagree, I think that's what makes this board nice - it's a new element and does live up to the brutalist name. If you remove it, it's just another 60% imo!

PLEASE!!! Would want to see weights poking out of the back!! :-(

Also love that you can swap case colors, any chance we'll see a PC swappable version?

Just received an email about a V2 1800, which has me excited.

I just love my Rekt 1800, and my only "want" would be a more elaborate case, and the renders of the new version seem to fit that bill nicely, so thanks for that.

One comment, take it for what it's worth, but please vet out your mount and foam methodology carefully to assure it doesn't kill the great Rekt sound.  I say this as someone that bought a KBDfans Odin, and wound up selling it because the sound was just plain blah.  Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I'm thinking that too much foam and isolation isn't a good thing.  Anyway, I also vote for a FR4 plate.  It has the best balance of flexibility and sound damping, in my opinion, of course.

Anyway, looking forward to this new board.

What about the Savage 65? Is it turning into Brutal as well, or still keeping Savage 65 V2 ? : )
