Title: Gaming: disadvantage through usb switch using?
Post by: CeeSA on Wed, 22 September 2010, 08:17:46
Hello geekhack community,

first of all, i am fascinated  of all the diskussion about inputdevices and modifications.

I am hot of trying a mechanical keyboard first time.
by then i have a question.

Do you think using a USB Switch between 2 pc and the keyboard is a disadvantage for gaming performance?

i did not feel something but i am curious  to know your opinion.

USB Switch like this:

When i use a 2 pc usb 3 items switch for keyboard and mouse do you think
this is a disadvantage ?

thank you!

USB KVM switches are supposed to not have any latency. Try it, if you don't notice anything then it should be fine.

Avoid IP based KVM switches however, also known as iKVM for some retarded reason. IP/network based KVM switches _do_ introduce latency.

Mandingo would cause too much latency; size isn't everything.

(Cue premature ejaculation joke...)

This is one area where USB switches can be better than PS/2 ones. With PS/2 the driver (like SetPoint) can lose track of what mouse you have so it reverts to acting as a 2-button standard mouse. With USB you force the mouse to reinitialise when you switch, so you don't get that problem.

Raj, I'll convert you yet!!!!

The real reason I don't like PS/2 is I have to get under my desk in the dark and it's scary down there.

My computer is on my desk. ;)
