I am inclined to think that this may be it. A dangerous game, given the potential of a freak working at the facility and sneaking a sample out, but knowledge is always valuable.

Maybe the intent was not to create something more lethal, but to study new lab-created variants, and this was one of the results. What if they made an incredibly contagious variant that caused no side effects in the host and was easy to kill with anti-virals? That would be a good back-up plan in case a covid variant that was world-ending deadly hit the human population. Instead, they just skipped right to making the deadly one by accident...

It would be silly to think virology is only used reactionaly rather than proactively. I do however hope that the security of the labs is top-notch much like any other virology lab (outside of China)

And part of that is because our enemies can and will weaponize it and we need to prepare for it.
While the average person freaks out about it, this is nothing compared to the things sitting in military stockpiles.

given today's technology, it is TRIVIAL to come up with deadly diseases, or A bigger b0mb.
why hasn't anyone really done that, because the b0mbs and diseases are already so effective, that unilateral victory in war is impossible.
there is some aspect of convergence still happening related to smaller countries, but the world power is generally set.
at this point we either evolve beyond the bickering , or climate change wipes all of humanity out. we've got ~15-20 years.

True, I doubted the veracity of the source rather.... but I doubt it`s a COMPLETE fabrication, it`s probably just presented in an extremely skewed way. I can't deny it's worrying though :/ .
