Title: Games? Anyone else wastes their time?
Post by: Ekaros on Wed, 29 September 2010, 19:18:26
So, my last find for time waster:
Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale (http://store.steampowered.com/app/70400/)

Intresting japanese, indie game. Quite fresh for western market. I like the subjet for being one doing bussiness, hmm maybe it's why I liked Drug Wars on my palm...

So, you are loli-girl who is forced to host a item shop for townfolks and adventurers, or face losing home and living in cardboard-box. Just cause his dad took a loan, which has gotten rather massive...

You can buy items and then sell them for higher-markup. Or hire an adventurer and follow him in dungeon and just collect all the drops. So basicly he is your slave for half-a-day ;D

Have to find more games like this... Or anyway other good games...

Drug Wars / Dopewars... great little time-wasters :) I liked Dopewars on the Palm as well. Been playing the Android version (by Joe Daverin) recently, it's good, but just not as good :( So I've started writing my own version of it... already quite fun to play but it needs a lot of polish!

I'm into...too many games to count. Hell, I have more games than time to play 'em all. But mostly FPSs, RPGs, and combat vehicle simulations.

I'll have to pawn off some of my extra stuff, though. A spare SNES and a spare Saturn, for starters.

(On an unrelated note, does anyone have the urge to go beyond the impossible right about now?)

I play Bad Company 2 and Starcraft 2 quite a bit. I generally play just one or two games for very long stretches of time. I find games more fun when you are playing at a relatively high level.

I'll fire up the Nintendo 64 when I want some good single player stuff. I'm working through Turok 2 right now. Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros for N64 are the party games when I have people over, or the Chu-Chu Rocket on the Dreamcast if we feel like playing strange Japanese action-puzzle games.

Play quite a number of FPS games

QuakeLive, Return to Castle Wolfenstien, Enemy Territory: Wolfenstien, Counter Strike: Source, and Call of Duty 4 sometimes.

I play 'competitively' too I guess, it's quite enjoyable, but I need a job.

Play SC1 sometimes too! :)

In term of major time-wasters I play Full Tilt Poker. Play money of course, I am stingy like that :D But boy oh boy does that game waste time. I sometimes found myself playing for several hours and didn't gain all that much. Also I have been up to over a million play chips (which takes a while if u play with some sort of strategy and don't just rely on a huge luck string) and lost all, won over a mill again and lost it all again. Happened few times by now ;)

The ultimate time-consumer out there must be Civilization though. I played it for a month or so. After I cut a date short where I would probably have gotten lucky in the end because I had to get back to finish that round, I realized what happened to me and uninstalled that evil piece of hell.
No More Turns ! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccn9V8V10q4&feature=related) (can't seem to directly embed the youtube link)

I have found sort of a "healthy" way of playing with the following games recently:
Bad Company 2
Starcraft 2
Nba 2k10 (on xbox 360, will buy 2k11 on release day, I just luuuuv basketball ;) )

Also Fallout New Vegas will come out later in October, I pre-ordered it and hope I won't loose my job because of it :D
I play Fallout 1+2 for like 4 times each. Then waited for a felt eternity and was finally, pleasantly surprised that Fallout 3 came out. Liked it, didn't love it as much as 1+2 but as a fan I couldn't stop devouring that game. For a month I pretty much didn't do anything but playing Fallout 3.... Thank god for the student life :D

I have a closet full of PC games dating back to 1987.  This is no exaggeration - the closet is literally stuffed floor-to-ceiling with PC games.  Probably 3/4 of them I did not play for more than 5 minutes.  Some day I will sell the collection on ebay, and then maybe buy an old castle or something.

But anyway, my current playlist is nothing special:
TF2
Mass Effect
Minecraft (and damn you person who posted that here whose name I can't remember right now)

Post by: Senor_Cartmenez on Thu, 30 September 2010, 08:46:06
Mass Effect 1 had a cool story but the most boring and generic side-missions I have ever seen in a game. Almost ruined it for me ^^
Second part was way too Hollywood bang boom bang I have more action, explosions and thus a biger **** than you.

TF2
That's one milestone game that I have sidestepped somehow ^^

Of late: Return of the King, Warcraft III The Frozen Throne, Sid Meier's Pirates! (the 2004 remake)
Kinda recently: Fallout 3, Tropico 3, Stronghold 1-2, Mass Effect 2

Battle for Middle Earth 1 and 2 are waiting for me and I'm gonna play Fallout 3 DLCs before New Vegas comes out, which I must have sooner or later. Undecided about Starcraft 2.

BTW, anybody got strong opinions on Starcraft 2 or some of the newer ahoy-matey games?

Nice pic, ripster. Final Fantasy is a sweet series too.

Yeah I'm a huge fan of Blizzard games. When Diablo 3 comes out it is gonna be great. I hope they don't make it too much like WoW however. I know that game is their big money maker, but that doesn't mean they have to completely neglect their other franchises (i.e. Starcraft, Diablo, Warcraft RTS instead of MMO). Starcraft 2 is of course what I'm working on now, it's very fun. Warcraft 3 will always be a classic for me, even if I hardly play it anymore. I know there will always be a huge debate between Starcraft and Warcraft fans over why Starcraft is better than War3, but I like to think they are both fun and challenging in their own way. You can't always compare them, but there are certain skill sets which can transfer over from one game to the other.

In other words you're playing older games or console ports.

There are only 4 bigname titles exclusively for the PC coming out this year.  StarCraft 2, WOW Cataclysm, Civ V, Shogun 2.

The Future of PC Gaming:

Console Port

Farmville2

Console Port

WOW Ten

Console Port

Console Port

Farmville 3....

Don't forget east-europeans ;D They make more intresting stuff... Mainly western market has gotten to such hi-production values that anything too special doesn't cut. Indies can do more niche. New AA(A) games cost so much to do that producers aren't taking nny risks and aim to all markets which leads half-assed ports of games. They work, but they could be so much better, like their inventory system...

The game I has played most in last years is Anarchy Online:
Ekarona has played 306 days 1 hours 26 minutes 46 seconds
Ekaslave has played 28 days 15 hours 48 minutes 0 seconds
Loged in hours... Lot of AFK, but...

I've been playing Runescape for the last seven Years, have a combat level 138, 136 and another 136, the latter two are Pures gone wrong, that's because I'm just rubbish at this game. I didn't have the heart to neglect the superfluous accounts, so I trained all three evenly.

Edit: Now 138, 137, 137.

Just bought Tropico 3 on steam. Finished some 2 or 3 missions today, making El Presidentes after doods I worked with at that law firm, one of which was a she.

And finally managed to launch the 2004 Pirates! under Win7, and along with EAX. And played with 7.1 speakers full of piratey stuff.

And restored EAX in Warcraft 3 (losing the single highest resolution in the process).

I'm never gonna finish that darned Ph.D. in ambulance chasing.

I mostly play games that can run under ScummVM (http://www.scummvm.org/). I'm for the moment trying to finish Broken Sword 2. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broken_Sword_II:_The_Smoking_Mirror)

Other games I'm trying to finish at the moment:
Frontier (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frontier:_Elite_II)
Cannon Fodder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannon_Fodder)
Super Frog (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superfrog)
Wing Commander IV (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wing_Commander_4)

(cannon fodder and super frog I actually already played through... but that was about 15 years ago... so I'm replaying them just for fun.)

And when I want to beat up some friends:
Tracker Hero (http://www.terra.es/personal8/937611204/trackerhero/index.html)
Worms: The Director's Cut (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worms:_The_Director's_Cut)

Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos has been taking my time for the last few days, most notably after I got the SpacePilot working the way I wanted it to.

After a bit of .ini editing for the controls, it's quite workable on this notebook to play with just SpacePilot for movement and autopilot, and the keyboard with everything else. (Mostly because primary weapons do track in a limited arc in front of your ship and have lead compensation, to boot. It's less about marksmanship and more about maneuvering properly.) As for my desktop...I'm working on a TM HOTAS Cougar profile. There are just enough bindings in the game that I need to have some shift functions without resorting to the keyboard, but I've found that using the dogfight switch as the mode selector ends up being overkill. The S3 shift alone should do it, and helps save me the hassle of making sure the dogfight switch is in the right position while in the middle of a fight.

How's Starcraft 2 ladder, by the way? Is it civilised gameplay or the same hit and run micro and cookie-cutter macro from Warcraft 3?

I wouldn't go so far as call it civilized, but it's a lot more macro oriented than WC3.

That sounds more or less like any RTS that has a lot going on in it. SC2 is much more Macro focused but out of control Micro can win games. But if harassment style game play is "uncivilized" to you, you may not want to play this game. If you want to line up 200/200 armies and see who wins, play team games I guess, maybe?

I hear if u play sc2 on korean servers it is exactly that micro heavy, "I kill you short time", ultra-agressive gameplay that is probably what u described in wc3.

Europe and US tend to be more macro oriented as you described but yeah, lot of cheese as they call it, too. Just make sure you scout enough and see when they try to build 2 gateways in front of your base or something like that and you will win the game quicker with your solid build.

Being in the bronze league since placement has banished me from ever playing a good game. 6/10 games are total cheese (SCV rush, 6 pool, cannon rush) 2/10 are just incredible noobiness (complete turtling, mass marines/zerglings/banelings/etc.), so that the 1 game out of 10 that is actually half decent, I'll win probably 60-70% of the time. Obviously I'm not advancing anywhere with that kind of track record. It really sucks too, because I'm in silver/gold in my 2v2 rankings with friends (it makes you have new placement matches with every new friend team you play with).

Man I wish I could re-place myself.

Moral of the story is USE ALL 50 PRACTICE GAMES BEFORE PLACING!

Lol, that sounds oddly familiar :)

Problem is that the practice matches suck donkeyballs. 1) you play on those stupid novice maps with rocks in front of your entry and 2) the people there are just ultra, ultra, hardcore n00bs. I was planning to play a bunch of training matches first but stopped at 5 or so which I all won except 1 mega cheese.

Not to mention the reduced game speed. I started doing other stuff I was so bored when playing those practise matches.

If you are playing well, it will start placing you against more skilled opponents regardless of your division.

The Practice matches are terrible as well, they are at a different game speed with rocks to prevent early pressure. Will teach nothing but bad habits that you won't want later on.

Really, the big thing is just to develop a solid macro and you'll win against most players till diamond.

Yeah but the problem is that if u get placed in bronze, silver or even gold that it gets tough to evolve a solid macro game cuz u constantly have to deal with all kinds of useless cheese. And more often than it should be you will even loose to that stupid cheese because you were focusing on training for a solid macro build.

That's exactly it. My builds are sound but I always seem to be too slow. Well, I don't care what you go, your build is going to be too slow when you're facing a 6 pool or an 8 pool or a zealot rush or a roach rush or...
I play with my Gold-tier buddy and we win every single time, because we got placed in 2v2 Gold as a team. I actually emailed Blizzard to ask them to give me my placement matches back. I know it probably won't happen but it's worth a shot.

If your build can't deal with a bronze or silver level six pool, cannon rush, proxy barracks or other cheese, then it's not a solid build. You need to learn to deal with those kinds of strategies because they occur at all levels of play. TLO six-pooled Huk in one game at MLG in Dallas and even Fruit Dealer used a six-pool in a semi-finals match in GSL season 1. Cannon contains are very common at all levels in PvZ right now.

Indeed. I got 7 pooled by a 1500 point Diamond Zerg the other day.  You have to be able to handle cheese at all levels. Sound scouting it a big part of that, and knowing exactly how to react in some cases.

And cannon contain is practically standard against Zerg. My friend that is top 300 in NA always puts a Drone on patrol at the bottom of his ramp against T and P to prevent a bunker or cannon contain.

Title: Games? Anyone else wastes their time?

the correct way I guess would be:

-scout earlier
-wall in better (better building placement)
- if u see a 6/7/8 pool, skip a worker or 2 to make an extra zealot/marines/bunker

Point is, executing cheese is fairly simple. Any player, Bronze or Silver, doesn't matter, can execute an early zergling rush with a 6 or 7 pool. They also won't be a lot less efficient than a diamond player executing the same rush. Of course they won't be controlling nearly as well and make some mistakes droning up parallel to their rush activity, but these drawbacks won't be visible until later in the game. So for the first few minutes, where they actually do the 6 or 7 pool rush, they will be more or less just as effective with it as a diamond player.

The difference is that in Bronze, Silver and maybe Gold, if you repel the first rush, they are done for. It is very likely that you will get them soon after and they have basically lost. In Diamond, players will be able to make a switch/transition into a macro build.

But at the lower levels, if you are scouting too late/at the wrong time (and let's face it, in lower level play that is a tough thing to pull off), then a cheesy build like that can kill you quite easily. And it sucks because they are not better players than you, they actually are much worse. They will probably never get out of bronze, while you will, because more often than not, they will loose with their cheese. But it slows down your own development and training of your build if you have to constantly deal with these poons and sometimes loose to them, too.

Speaking of AoE III, I got that as part of the GfWM sale and remembered why I'm not very much into RTSs-the interface. Hotkeys all over the place, too much of a stretch to use Shift, Ctrl, or Alt with keys 6 through 9 and still keep my right hand on the mouse, and so on.

As for other games, Impulse recently took a bite out of my wallet with the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and X3 Gold sales, and I'm just getting started on the former (Shadow of Chernobyl, of course; I'm not touching Call of Pripyat 'til I'm done with the first).

Looking at all of these new games is depressing. Oh wow "3D" graphics: all graphics look the same today (seriously, it's the same 3D style repeated over and over). Bunch of polygonic models with generic textures slapped on.

And the way people get excited and pour over them is quite strange. It's like everyone forgot what REAL games were. Moving forward, yet really backward.

Well, I'm certainly unhappy with all the newer games:
#1 BAD MUSIC.
#2 Graphics that all have the same generic 3D style.
#3 poor gameplay.
#4 little replay value with a total de-emphasis on map editors.

Rayman Origins is in production; while it's certainly a lower mark to the original Rayman: I commend the fact that THEY'RE ACTUALLY HAND DRAWING ALL OF THE GRAPHICS! Wow. No more effortless 3D, finally.

Rayman 2 had nice 3D graphics though (probably still beats some of the "new" games).

Now, the music. Ohhh the music. New games today have generic ambient fillers, or total trash. Where's the melodies right into the game? I mean REAL melodies.
Rob Hubbard realized how music can really enhance a game: heck, some people bought a C64 and the games just to listen to the music.

Well that's my rant.
Title: Games? Anyone else wastes their time?

Not really. It was always that only very small percentage of games are worth, the others are just in the rush to make $$, exploiting whatever is modern and selling at the time. I enjoy old ones equally to new ones, provided they're of the "good" kind. Games are about innovation, art, execution and polishing.

tl;dr - try some of the good newer games, ignore the other crap.

I recently bought and played through Mafia II...

Meh... I have to say that the story flows very naturally and you kind of walk through it very fast and easy which is both positive and negative I'd say. Positive because there is no "boring" in between. Negative because there is no real reason and opportunity to go off expanding on your own. Aside from the odd car you MIGHT be able to find and the few pinups that I really couldn't care less for, there is just nothing there.
As a result you really blow through the game very fast and I'd say it has 0 replay value. Honestly doesn't compare at all to the original Mafia which was just plain awesome.

Now I got Battlefield Vietnam since my friends were bothering me. Not bad but not that great either. Gameplay is a bit different, there is much more hiding going on and stuff. The copters are way overpowered though I feel.

I think I will start playing more Starcraft again...

Anyway: Back to SC2 for me nowadays. Think I will keep it that way until Dragon Age 2 comes out. Dragon Age was a pretty sweet game. Alas not nearly as good as BG/2 as was promised and defo had its shortcomings. But it was worth the bucks and time well spent I'd say :)

Bad Company 2 is some of the most fun LAN gaming I've had in a long time. Get 4 guys on a squad in the same house crowing and shouting, holy crap that's a ton of fun.

Bad Company 2 is just a pretty awesome game period.

I didn't think it was so great until I was kinda forced to buy it and try it out by my broskis.
God investment that. From the facts on paper I couldn't really make out what the difference to any old shooter with some up to date graphics was. But they actually did some very good fine tuning in terms of gameplay that made it just a very good game at the end.

Modern Warfare on the other hand did nothing.

I used to play PC games a lot, but I have pretty much stopped since I started studying. A real pity though that my gaming rig doesn't see much more than Word or Opera these days...

1) destructible environments

2) vehicles

3) LARGE maps

4) Classes that allow you to actually do things besides KILL

all that creates:

5) real teamwork

Well 1 was kinda new (maybe new for a multiplayer game).

2) old (but very well implemented i.e. balanced to each map, better than in any other game I know)
3) old (and not all the maps are exactly large, I found those maps that were too large a big problem in previous battlefield games. result always was: get a plane/copter or walk around by foot seeing no action. In hindsight I think they did a great job here as well. Especially with the Rush mode [which is new, isn't it?] where they step by step expand the map which is great)

4) not sure bout this one, couldn't figure out how well they did though until I was playing the game. The Medic was VERY well implemented. The Recon class as well (even though it is abused as a pure sniper class by a felt 85% of all players), so were Engineer and Assault. They did a marvelous job with the classes imho.

5) that I read on every MP shooter ever released. how should I know from paper that they actually realized this properly in BC2 :) But they did a fine job at that, definitely.

Sorry, I should have clarified. My post was directly aimed at comparing the quake/unreal/halo/CoD/MoH "norm" (especially on consoles, where CoD will outsell BF:BC2 in orders of magnitude) to the "Battlefields" of the genre.

I just don't get how anyone can consider CoD: MW2 or Black OPs the "best".

Actually that's not correct. The only reason there is "real teamwork" is because there are xp gains from it, spotting and dropping ammo packs is the easiest xp an assault will get in any given game. This actually forces users to stick together as well.

The END GOAL of every game is to get XP, in fact losing doesn't even bother new people as long as they get a **** bunch of XP.

idk
I think in BC2 they did a great job with the "forcing teamplay" not only because of XP. I mean yes, until u are a certain level and have unlocked all the schtuff, you are hogging XP which is also why there are so many medics with low levels. But once you have all that stuff, they managed to balance the classes in terms of weapons so well, that there is always a reason to have a good mix of classes because the medics just like everybody just have certain types of cool guns. Always having different classes and not everyone playing with 2 or 3 different types of weapons (CS ...) is a big point in Teamplay.

As a result of this and the XP thing and the fact that you can have negative K:D ratios and still get the Ace Pin for best player in the round by always repairing your teammates vehicles, healing them and all that good jaz have resulted in a certain vibe within the BC2 community.

That vibe is that a dude who sits at 32:5 but effectively doesn't do **** for the team cuz he is mostly concerned with getting a 32:5 K:D ratio is not seen as "omfg, that guy is such an uber pro!" but as "omfg, what a stathog..." which in my oppinion is quite healthy.

Also more and more (but still too few) ppl do actually applaud a Recon guy who is moving forward with the rest of the team throwing motion mines (or moth balls as we like to call them) and subsequently not getting such a great K:D as opposed to a Recon guy sitting way back in a safe, elevated spot with his x12 scope and occasionally sniping someone who gets into his area...

I usually do 20:10 and only drop stuff on request. But when you and all your friends are in the same room you can just say "gimme a medkit" or "gimme ammo" and it's done. When there's a pug I am a bit more proactive, though. :)

I have been playing Starcraft 2, (ALOT!!!) CS:S, Cod4, BFBC2, Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, and Angry Birds. So ya that takes up my free time. Now to save to get a mech keyboard, my first and I can't wait.

My in-game time is not THAT high... I hope.

I just started playing a new indie shooter called, "Breach." It's a console port but with some post-release developer support it could be really fun.

*edit: I'll toss in a video I took.

My Favs are Descent and Super Metroid!

Super Metroid! My all-time favorite game :thumb:

As far as current games I'm playing:

Starcraft II - the depth to this game is what keeps me at it
CS:S - not so often now that I've gotten into sc2
Oblivion - still not sure if I really like it all that much
Cave Story - hard to beat in terms of good, simple fun
Baldur's Gate II - been a few years since I last played through
Mother 3 - sequel to Earthbound that wasn't ever released in the US or Europe, a group of fans did the translation, and did it extremely well

Now that I look at that list it seems like a lot... I need to finish some of those off.

I own and love Starcraft 2. I'm also terrible at it. Imagine a league beneath tin. That's where I lived during the beta. Now I usually just watch other people play -- mostly the Korean GSL. Otherwise I stick to MMOs. *ducks the incoming shoes*

Fighting games are still my guarded favorite. Thing is, there was no scene in Boston when I got back from Australia, and fighting games had yet to go online, so I got rusty and eventually abandoned it.  Then all of my systems were stolen by the movers when I, y'know, moved to Seattle. (Well, except for the Dreamcast. My copy of Third Strike survived to spend the next two or three years as a hostage in my sister's storage unit.) *shrug*
