Title: To tile or not to tile... that is never the question
Post by: iLLucionist on Wed, 21 December 2022, 07:42:10
I'm an avid user of the holy trinity: i3 + tmux + neovim.

I also have a Mac... with overlapping windows. Windows has overlapping windows.
I get it, around Windows 2.0 and original MacOS it was a technical feat if you could pull it off.

But usability wise, why would one EVER want overlapping windows?
Switching windows sucks, I wanna see EVERYTHING.

Need to see more / want more windows? Just buy more screens. You can't have enough screens,
I have a 49 ultrawide (5220x1440) and 2x27 vertical mounted. I can barely manage when coding.

Tiling wm's ftw.

buy 2 of those cheap amd gpus with 4x displayport outs each.

then run 8x 65 inch 4k tvs.

buy a colorimeter so you can color calibrate all of them.

you can make oled work in a dark room, but for them to 'not" burn in on a terminal, you have to keep it under ~100nits, that's not bright enough for open windows.

holding out for samsung qned,  this is the next OLED.

micro led might as well be a million years away because we only have 10-15 years left on planet earth before the Great Calamity.

This is what I run at work (and I want more screens) - trying to convince the partner parent company (Dell) to "gift" a couple Alienware Ultrawide OLED's for my desk ( I know I can fit 3 ) or at least a 43" panel to go with my current:

Had to keep my son entertained while I was working, lol.  Fortunately I have a laptop as a reserve to cover for small things I was dealing with or transferring to the supervisors I manage.

Kinesis Advantage 360 on my matte:

Towards the wall on my disk, the Logitech K860 to bridge the time getting used to the layout of the Advantage:

Thanks! Do you happen to know whether the height and distance of the thumb cluster is the same as on the regular Advantage?

As long as the keyboard is TENTED, the distance to thumb cluster is immaterial.

The reason there was an outcry of the original ergodox cluster distance, is because people were using them FLAT, which they shouldn't have been doing.

Using flat, means you have to rotate the wrist deeply to reach the cluster,  if you're tented, your relaxed thumb naturally reaches the cluster no problem as you pull your arm slightly inward using the biceps.  <this is the proper way> to use Split keeb,

TENTED !!

I also have a moonlander and there the RSI problem moved from my wrist to my thumb: the thumb cluster was too far away (and i have large hands, I also play piano).

With the Advantage 360 (don't know about other Kinesis boards), indeed it tents and on top of that the keys are closer and better positioned compared to the Moonlander.

The stupidiest thing about the Moonlander IMHO (and YMMV) is that the thumbcluster barely stays up due to how they constructed the case. Yes, one can buy additional legs that screw into the thumb cluster, but to me, it's just dumb design. I really wanted to like the moonlander tho, it has more extra buttons than the Advantage 360 and I also like customizing it more. Oh well...

The moonlander is different, by bending down the cluster, they've removed some benefits of tenting. It just means they did not understand the ergonomic problem to begin with and merely made what looked cool to them.

They should've consulted the Jedi of Dox, Tp4.

I work in Windows, on two 49" monitors. All the windows are 'tiled' by desktop software.

Single 1600x1200 monitor here and I run most things in full screen, sometimes I need to reference something else so make a small window and "always on top" it.  When working in an office I did enjoy my multi monitor setup (two 4:3 monitors flanking a 16:10 in portrait) but even then it was usually only 3 windows with a screen each.  I guess if you make your monitor unusably wide (fullscreen a paragraph would just be a really long line requiring head movement to read) this would be more of a problem but I'm resisting as long as possible.
