Title: what are you having for dinner?
Post by: wellington1869 on Sun, 03 October 2010, 19:08:28
I'm having a subway sandwich. Turkey with cheese, yellow and green peppers, olives, and vinegrette dressing, on wheat. With a yogurt and a water.

Lammy's having microwaved twinkies with canned beans.

What about you?

Pasta. I like macaroni noodles because they cook nicely, and you can eat lots of them. Usually people get too full from pasta due to the type of noodles used...

I probably make the best pasta in the world (no joke).

Ingredients:
*Macaroni
*butter
*extra virgin olive oil
*milk
*cottage cheese
*ronzoni pasta sauce
*cheese

The cottage cheese helps give it a more smooth texture (sour cream will do too!). Olive oil is to help everything stick to the noodles, plus it's good for you. Butter gives flavour, and prevents noodles from sticking.

Sometimes I fry up eggs, with some onion & chicken.

we are a carb-heavy nation arent we.

good to see folks are squeezing some veggies in there though. I've been on a peppers kick lately (both yellow and green).  My brother-in-law made me a grilled cheese with yellow "banana" peppers inside, was surprisingly delicious.

Man, **** moving.  After having to get a refrigerator (this ***** (http://products.geappliances.com/ApplProducts/Dispatcher?REQUEST=SpecPage&Sku=PSCS3RGXSS)) upstairs into the townhouse along with a washer, dryer and 4 marble tables, I have a whole new level of respect for the pros.

Please send cards and flowers to NE Methodist Hospital, Room 911 while I recover from hernia surgery.  My forearms hurt so much from gripping the dolly that I can't even hold my **** to take a piss.

Screw that. We paid a moving company the last time we moved. They packed up all our stuff and loaded it, delivered it and brought everything into the new house.
There is no way I can move all our stuff by myself anymore. I liked it better when we were younger and had less stuff. Much easier then.

Guh yeah.  That was pretty bad.  I thought it was taffy before I clicked the link.  Nearly died.

I had BBQ Chicken Wings for dinner.  With the bones.  Probably still processed in some way.  The fries were to die for though.

i'm convinced that perhaps 75% of the taste with meat comes from the sauce or the marinade. Take chicken for instance. Chicken meat by itself has very little inherent "taste." Its things like bbq sauce or honey mustard that makes it so delicious.  "You could put that stuff on a shoe and it would taste pretty good to me".

Baking Electronics (http://www.overclock.net/graphics-cards-general/529271-bake-your-graphics-card-oven-fix.html) I guess is popular there.

That particular baking is for fixing graphics cards believe it or not.

The story is that nVidia graphics cards specifically, over time, develop loose contacts on some of the capacitors and etc soldered on to the board and it no longer works. So what do you do? Bake it! That reseats the loose contacts and the heat liquifies to a degree the solder which then hardens in the new spot. Result is a somewhat fixed graphics card that previously would not boot. Doesn't last long but still..

If you search long enough someone may have confused it for his dinner tho.. :)

Some of them do. It's a known issue on my Thinkpad T61...some people actually fixed the issue by baking their Thinkpads in their ovens. I just sent mine back to the manufacturer for a motherboard replacement =)

I'm a ****, I admit it.
I'll prolly click on it but I need to build up the courage first.

I dont like what goes into the production of modern meat. The scale of it, the horror of it, and the bacteria of it.
I dont want to give up meat altogether (all things in moderation, and all that) but i'd like very much to scale it back a lot.

I have intermittent success with that. Sometimes I go a whole week without any meat and it feels great, i lose weight, and have a freer conscience. Would like to maybe eat meat twice a week at most.

the "Seafood Sensation" at Subway was my favorite. basically a lobster, crab and mayonnaise spread. I used to get tomato, lettuce, onion, extra cheese, extra mayonnaise, bacon, pickles, olives, salt and pepper, olive oil.

with an interesting history ;)

Quote

Another story about this dish's origin comes from author and chef Diane Seed in her book, Top 100 Pasta Sauces (p. 20) ISBN 0-89815-232-1:
My introduction to this famous pasta dish occurred when I overheard two elderly priests discussing the pros and cons of spaghetti alla puttanesca ("****'s spaghetti") as they deliberated over the menu in a Neapolitan restaurant. Made of ingredients found in most Italian larders, this is also known as spaghetti alla buona donna - or "good woman's spaghetti" - which can be misleading if one is not familiar with the ironic insult figlio d'una buona donna - son of a good woman.[5]

To understand how this sauce came to get its name, one must consider the 1950s when brothels in Italy were state owned. They were known as case chiuse or 'closed houses' because the shutters had to be kept permanently closed to avoid offending the sensibilities of neighbors or innocent passersby. Conscientious Italian housewives usually shop at the local market every day to buy fresh food, but these "civil servants" were only allowed one day per week for shopping, and their time was valuable. Their specialty became a sauce made quickly from odds and ends in the larder.

I make homemade pasta sauce and can it.

blanch and peel roma tomatoes. tomato paste, onions, carrots, celery, salt, pepper, olive oil, red pepper, garlic, burgundy wine. tie fresh parsley, bay leaves and oregano with butchers twine then fish it out when I am ready to use the sauce.

puttanesca means prostitute or street walker in italian. a couple people claim to have invented pasta puttanesca. I was told it was invented by prostitutes in italy because after work they were hungry but didn't have a lot of money.

good job :)

bake a potato in aluminum foil. let it cool. split the potato and carve the insides with a spoon. put the insides in a bowl then add milk, butter, bacon, chive, pepper and whip it with a hand mixer. pipe the whipped potato into the potato skin and sprinkle cheddar cheese on top. put it in the oven. put a scoop of sour cream on top.

looks good :) I think the bacon is key.

My favorite "3 minute meal" from my undergrad days was:
1. one bag Ramen, any flavor. Add cup of mixed frozen vegetables. Nuke in water for 1 minute 30 seconds
2. strain and plate
3. Sprinkle with italian dressing
4. open the ramen 'flavor packet', lightly sprinkle half its contents over top of everything. This is mainly just for the 'saltiness' of it.

Yum. And there's veggies in there too, didja notice?

If you do get your wife to change her mind, go with Silestone.  Less expensive, more resilient, non-pourous, stays cold like granite, and some of the varieties have more "depth" than granite.  The new stuff my parents got is gorgeous.  The Silestone I had in my house (see epic pic post above) was nice, but nowhere near as nice as the stuff they have now.

The townhouse/apartment I have now has granite.  It's pretty nice.  I need to get done hanging the curtains and stuff so I can get all the tools off the countertops. I forgot what they look like.

I'm repenting for last night's pulled pork sandwich. Breakfast this morning was oatmeal. With raisins, walnut, cranberries, brown sugar, and a large coffee. It was delicious actually, and only $2, and very filling, and great for my well-abused arteries.

We have a great place here that has an "oatmeal bar". You can walk up to it and "accessorize" your oatmeal from the condomints bar.

Incidentally, starbucks' oatmeal is really delicious too. They give it to you with the standard package of brownsugar/cranberries/raisins/walnuts. And cheap there too.

That makes sense. Well i'm a huge fan of original series and then tng (which I think kicked original series' ass out of the water, btw).

But for me, I just couldnt get into DS9 and enterprise. I think I know why though.

I mean, okay, lets take these one at a time.

DS9: All my friends (who do watch it, btw) tell me that after a couple of miserable opening seasons, it got a lot better. Problem: I only watched the first few miserable seasons and got so turned off by it that I never found the motivation to follow up with the rest. I suppose I should rent them from netflix or something. In the meanwhile I discovered Firefly (and Serenity) and, come on, omg, it kicked ass. Even the reboot of battlestar galactica kicked ass (mostly). With alternatives like that I just never got around to catching up with DS9.

Enterprise: sweetheart i'm sorry I cannot get past the opening song!. Does that make me a bad person?

one of my favorite episodes of Next Generation.

I didn't like the intro to Enterprise. I think Jerry Goldsmith did most of the scoring for the Star Trek franchise and I enjoyed his orchestra scores. Jerry's son Joel does the scoring for the Stargate franchise.

Joel Goldsmith at work ;)

I really like Battlestar Galactica too. I watched Serenity movie and enjoyed it but I haven't seen Firefly.

thats one of my fav episodes of tng too, i have it saved on my tivo :)
I also like a lot of the Q episodes (which includes the first encounter with the Borg, for instance). Great episode.
Also like the one where Q is punished by being made human. There's a lot of sly and self-referential humor in that episode actually, its very cute.
A lot of people's favorite tng episode is the one where picard lives out a whole lifetime as an alien farmer of an extinct species after being probed by an alien craft. You know, the one with the flute. Its a very good one, though not necessarily my top choice.
Also people like the one where he visits home in France and fights with his older brother. Another excellent one but these were done during the 'soap opera' phase of tng which it went into for a year or two. Great character development but not much action.
Good stuff though. See they never lost sight of character development in tng, thats what made it so interesting year after year.

if you liked serenity you'll love firefly. After watching serenity i was so blown away i went and rented all the firefly dvd's and watched them in a row. (I missed the original tv run).

Deep Space Nine and Enterprise use the Berman formula which is a character driven drama that deals with topics like war, romance, politics, religion, etc. you wouldn't see this in Star Trek or Star Trek: The Next Generation

I like Caprica but the ratings are not good. I think it will get canceled.

the reason I haven't watched Firefly is because I don't want to get attached to something that was canceled after one season and say "I hate the Fox network!"

when Enterprise was canceled I turned to Stargate. The Stargate franchise has 17 seasons of television (3 series) and 3 movies.

I've also been told to watch buffy the vampire slayer (joss whedon's other big project).

yea they keep talking about restarting firefly but with each passing year that seems much less likely.

Fox is just stupid. They also cancelled family guy before eventually restarting it when the dvds sold well.

I think everybody has seen the 1994 Stargate film with Kurt Russell. Brad Wright (The Outer Limits) created a television series called Stargate SG-1 the story begins two years after the events of the 1994 Stargate film.

Stargate SG-1 isn't your typical film to television series.

Quote
With 10 seasons and 214 episodes Stargate SG-1 surpassed The X-Files in 2007 as the longest-running North American science fiction series on television, although Stargate SG-1 itself is expected to be surpassed in this record by Smallville in April 2011, as that series finishes its long run.

any television series that produces 10 seasons isn't bad.

Season 2 of Stargate Universe is airing now.

here is the order to watch.

Stargate (Film)
Stargate SG-1 Season 1-10
Stargate Ark of Truth (Film)
Stargate Continuum (Film)
Stargate Atlantis Season 1-5
Stargate Universe Season 1-2

a lot of science fiction actors in the Stargate franchise that are either guest stars or recurring roles.

Armin Shimerman, Colm Meaney, Marina Sirtis, Adam Baldwin, Claudia Black, Ben Browder, John DeLancie, Rene Auberjonois, Robert Picardo, Jewel Staite, Nicole de Boer, Morena Baccarin, Christopher Heyerdahl, Ernie Hudson, Ryan Robbins, Connor Trinneer.

Stargate Universe is terrible. I still watch it though as SG:1 and Atlantis were pretty cool imho (Sheppard's book of computer repair ftw!)

But Universe.... I was talking bout it with a friend recently and he pointed out sth. quite interesting:

In the 10 seasons of SG:1, alle the movies and the 5 seasons of Atlantis, how many times did people sleep with each other (that we know of)??

Now count how often people are getting down and dirty in just 1 season of Universe... All that love fest makes me sick and it is more of a soap opera than a sci-fi series. It's obviously marketed towards femals who read romance novels and it makes me sick.

Damn I just typed too much with my rubber dome at work. I think I'm getting carpal tunnel now. Excuse me I have to go throw up again

yes i do, all the time. trying to cut down meat in general. my understanding tho is that pork and chicken/turkey and fish are all slightly less fatty than beef. Dont know if thats true or not.  will probably have whole wheat penne with green olives tonite, meeting friend for dinner.
Eating out is also precious socializing time, since everyone's so damn busy all the time. Like most new yorkers I rarely get to cook at home. I'd save a ton of money if I could eat at home more often. Or *gasp* pack a lunch.

yea thats a good one. I read somewhere that seth mcfarlane was a character on Enterprise? or maybe voyager. Also there are some other connections, he might be related to one of the TNG characters, possibly denise crosby. And picard is the voice of the cia chief in american dad. I read all this at some point (somewhere on wikipedia i'm sure).

breakfast time:  Trying to decide between oatmeal w banana in my room and save a few bucks, or go downstairs to the deli and get a nice egg n cheese with a bucket of coffee.  Unable to decide for the moment, and the indecision is paralyzing me in front of my computer.
Probably leaning towards the egg n cheese.

I had wendy's for dinner. I regretted it halfway through. So fatty.

I used to down cheeseburgers like there was no tomorrow. I think its a real sign of personal progress that I found myself wishing for a spinach-feta pie instead.

I even turned down the frosty on my way out. Can it be that i'm slowly becoming an adult?

we do the same in Canada bro ...

This is not super recent, but when I was a broke "college student", my drink of choice was as many cans of Bavaria 8.6 as I could afford, and this trusty tool I picked up at Canadian Tire. It's like it was made for drinking, it has a valve so you can load this ***** up to the brim and prepare before dropping it, it has a cap at the end to avoid dripping on someone's floor (I took it to every party), and it disassembles for easy cleaning/storage. Only one mod required, there is a filter inside that slows the flow of booze. Remove and you're good to go.

I was never into the bong.  Come to think of it, I never really drank for drunkz.  I was always more of a connoisseur of beer and wine.  Now don't get it twisted; I've seen the other side way more times than I care to remember.  Then there was that night with a stripper about 2 years ago that ended in me staying up for over 24 hours, throwing up in a Denny's and having a two day hangover.  Ouch.  I didn't even get any ass, either.  I think that had more to do with my ex still living in my house a the time.  Oh well, it probably saved me some whiskey-**** embarrassment.  Kids, learn from your Uncle Stallion, if you're partyin' with a stipper, she can out-drink you, she's a pro, you're not.  Make sure you nurse your beers and don't go toe-to-toe, you will flame out spectacularly.

pshhh, that's the ONLY reason I used to drink, was for drunkz, which is why I would put just about anything in that funnel (an 8 pack cans was a 10 minute MAX job. Couple of those and you feel really nice). Now that my body has slowed down to where I can't really process all the calories and **** from all that booze I have become more of a taster. Then again ... I got trashed on a Tuesday night recently ...

Today was a good day, food-wise.  Check it:

-breakfast: oatmeal (w brown sugar, raisins, walnuts).
-lunch: small pasta salad w green olives, carrot juice.  it was delish. Taste the lack of fat!
-dinner: salmon steak, and a samosa. Omega threes!

It was all very tasty too. And I feel great.

White wine adds some acidity.

When I worked in the stores, we had a Cosmetics manager that drank nothing but cranberry juice, because (as she claimed, anyway) her boyfriends (!) liked the taste.

actually I think you would call them cucumber skewers, as "batonnets" implies there is a stick involved. I prefer "brochettes", as they say in Quebec.

I made this (http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/bobby-flay/grilled-butterflied-trout-with-lemon-parsley-butter-recipe/index.html).  The problem is I don't have a grill.  Being the genius that I am, and the fact that I have one of these (https://secure.lodgemfg.com/storefront/product1_new.asp?menu=logic&idProduct=3940), I thought to myself, "I can do this **** on the stove top."

Wrong.

Well, not totally.  The fish came out perfect and was absolutely tremendous.  The problem was that it filled the entire house with smoke.  Fortunately, a "cold" front came in last night, and we were able to open up the windows, but next time, I'm doing that **** outside.

Soooooo delicious. So were the ham sandwiches today. :)
