Title: Beer spill + Unicomp 104 Customizer
Post by: Krogoth255 on Mon, 04 October 2010, 07:06:14
I had just spill some beer on my Unicomp Customizer 104.  I already attempted to clean it off with some water + isopropyl alcohol. It still doesn't work right. Any suggestions?

Under NO conditions put a model M/Unicomp in the dishwasher. I know of which I speak.

Read my post here: http://armyofevilrobots.com/model_m_refurb (http://armyofevilrobots.com/model_m_refurb)

Better fix is via a screwhack here: http://sandy55.fc2web.com/keyboard/repair_model_m.html (http://sandy55.fc2web.com/keyboard/repair_model_m.html)

Basically, pull apart keyboard tray, clean up as much as possible, and if the problem persists, you have to cut off the rivets, clean with a wet cloth, and re-assemble with screws. Time consuming, but repeatable and it works.

Doesn't work right mechanically or electronically or both?

It appears to be electrical in nature.

Brand of beer?

Just curious.

Have you at least opened it up yet?  You need a 5.5mm 7/32" deep socket to get in there.

Hacker-Pschorr Weisse

I already check the local hardware stores to find that 5.5mm  7/32" deep socket to no avail. :(

I am going to wait until it dries out some more. Perhaps, the membrane isn't completely dried yet.

It has been over 24 hours since, I did the flush. The keyboard is partly working now. "R" key works fine, the rest of the keys go berserk or random. The controller seems to be working fine, since cap/scroll/num lock light up if I were to enable it on my other keyboard (Logitech Elite USB).

I think the membrane just needs to dry itself more. I have play to the waiting game. FYI, I'm using my system as the gentle "space heater".

my fiancee has a work friend and she fosters huskies and has 2 of her own (to aquaint the foster'd huskies) now i'm very familiar with her 2 huskies and i've seen lots of her fostered huskies (i've even seen a terrier/huskie mix, lol wtf! hyperactive huskie is weird sauce) but they are the most expressionless dogs ever, they have like no eyebrows or anything, they just have one face! and thats the "i will break you" face! (i don't think her's are siberian huskies, if any one get's the dolph reference, but i think one is, used to be a showdog and pure white).

Talking about one face reminds me of pugs, how can people identify their dogs in a pugs owners' party?

Since this thread has been hijacked as the "puppy facial expression" page, here is my dog a couple of weeks back after dental surgery. She faceplanted on a mountain bike ride, and broke her big top right molar.

More keys are working and it is no longer going "berserk". A full recovery seems to be likely.

Nice home-crafted beers there. :D

I got the Hacker Pschorr because of Oktoberfest. I normally drink a variety of micro-brews. I had just finished a case of Dogfish Head's Pumpkin Ale.

I don't mean to hijack this thread but I don't want to create another thread just for this.

Basically I got a Cherry G80-8200 (brown switch) used on ebay and loved it. A couple days ago I spilled woodchuck hard cider on it and now the G,H and B keys are kind of 'mushy' like the sugar is inside the switches. I tried to pour a little bit of 70% rubbing alcohol on the switches and it worked for awhile before going 'mushy' again.

So is there anyway to fix it without putting it in the dishwasher or desoldering the switches?

Thanks guys.

I used 99% anhydrous alcohol and DeOxit shield I found, I hope that will get rid of the sugar and prevent it from rusting later.

You could also try a pure potable rectified spirit like everclear as long as it's 190 proof or 95% alcohol by volume upwards OuHiroshi.
