Title: What did I just buy?
Post by: Loser777 on Tue, 05 October 2010, 22:58:10
A friend of mine in China picked up a Scorpious M10 for me, but it appears to use some kind of greenish alps switch that are tactile and clicky...

The only mechanical keyboard I've owned before is the Unicomp 42H1292U, so my experience with such boards is fairly limited. I didn't expect a M10 to come with anything other than MX Blues O_o?

The Scorpius M10 uses Cherry MX blue switches. Never heard of anything else. Might be counterfeit?

Well for one the keyboard is white (like the one shown on the box)... and looks exactly like the black model other than the color. The build quality looks too good to be that of a counterfeit item. I think I may have bought a version of the M10 that isn't sold in the states.

Take a picture of the switches. You've certainly piqued my interest...

I don't currently have my digital camera, but here's a picture of a switch that looks exactly like what I have:

Odd, why would a scorpius m10 have green alps that are clicky tactile in them?

There is a green ALPS switch in the Wiki ALPS switches "Complicated ALPS - Linear (no bump in feel)" (http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=ALPS+switches#Complicated+ALPS+-+Linear+no+bump+in+feel) section, obviously listed as linear there.  More info in the switch index here (http://translate.google.com/translate?js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww7.ocn.ne.jp%2F~hisao%2Fjiku.htm) or drilled down into the green ALPS section here (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww7.ocn.ne.jp%2F~hisao%2Fimage%2Fcanonword.htm).

I'm not entirely familiar mechanical keyboard lingo e.g. "linear", but these switches seem to have a clear activation point/click... so I'm not entirely sure if these switches match those descriptions

Doesn't sound like it what you have matches with is described in the available info, no.

Is there movement space after the activation point or is the key at the bottom of the stroke? Is the activation point still noticeable if you slowly press the key down as lightly as possible?

I think you might have found a large number of people that will be... *puts on sunglasses*... Green with envy.

There is definitely more movement after the activation point and it is quite noticeable if I push the key down as slowly and as lightly as possible.

It's also definitely not a quiet board... probably just as loud as my Unicomp Model M remake

EDIT:
I just realized I never actually posted a link to where I bought the board:

There's pictures of the board with some of the keycaps removed... looks like WHITE ALPS switches. I guess the white variety is ALPS instead of Blues:

Green Alps are meant to be linear, but supposedly they are quite like Brown Cherry switches.

ALPS switches died out over ten years ago. As if any of the current Taiwanese clone companies still care for or follow the color schemes. I have some fake orange and yellow ALPS that click too.

However, the more interesting fact is that this is actually a Scorpius.. I guess they are secretly making a new revision since Cherry MX got too expensive.

Wow, what an interesting development on counterfeit keyboards.  I wonder if we will ever see these in the States.
