Of actual relevance, typing on a good rubber dome (e.g. my Dell Quietkey) makes typing on poorer rubber domes much more of a pain.

Typing on recently acquired rubber dome right now. It certainly feels a little weird after having typed only on mechanical keyboards for a few months.

To think of it... Once upon a time, when I did not know any better, I considered this keyboard (KeyTronic ergoforce) to be the pinnacle of keyboards. How wrong I was!

I agree, I love this keyboard. And now I hate others... Only my Lenovo laptop's scissor-switch one is somewhat decent...

Once upon a time, there was a little rubber dome. He and his 103 other rubber dome friends lived happily under the keycaps of the master's keyboard. Their job was to hold up the keycaps unless the master hit the keycap. Then the keycap would squish the little rubber dome, which made him press on Mr. Membrane. The domes were mushy and didn't do their jobs too well, but the master didn't think too much about it. Then, he noticed that the master was constantly going on Geekhack and looking for a new keyboard. He was going to get replaced! The little rubber dome was worried.

Then, one day, the master got a mechanical keyboard. It made clicky sounds and had a big expensive price label on it. The keycaps were blank and it said "Das keyboard" on it. From the sound the keyboard made, the little rubber dome found out that it was his arch nemisis, Mr. Cherry MX Blue. He and his friends, the Cherry Gang, the Alps Alliance, Mr. Buckling Spring, and those traitors the T.O.P.R.E. were constantly trying to defeat the Rubber Dome Membrane Empire's near monopoly on keyboards. He was really worried now.

It turned out that the master was so happy with his Das keyboard that he unplugged the keyboard  the little rubber dome lived in, and threw it in the basement. The basement was dark and lonely, and filled with spiders. The little rubber dome was sad that the master no longer pressed on him. Then for some reason, the master returned and plugged the keyboard back in. The little rubber dome was happy. He thought that he was going to get his job back. Boy was he wrong. The master typed on it a little, and then got sick of him, so he went to the bathroom and puked. The end.

Its like Toy Story 3 for keyboards.

Senor_Cartmenez: Rest assured, the geekhack community is not, in fact, collectively ****ting all over you. Simply put, ch_123 made a funny joke, and everyone else ran with it. Eventually we'll get the train back on the rails.

So yeah... I can't stand rubber dome keyboards anymore. And Toy Story 3 killed the little boy inside me.

I've wanted to make this statement all day, but the joke just kept running...

But yes Mr. Cartmenez, I can definitely agree with you, I had to type on my girlfriends computer the other day, and I was wondering why I made so many terrible errors, then I realized it was because I wasn't bottoming out all the way, so the keys weren't actuating because they were domes.  I told her she had to take one of my brown 'boards after that...

Yus!

Rubber domes never feel the same after a good mechanical board comes your way.

I found an DELL almost bearable, others not so... Getting Filco is getting bit painfull, mainly cause I have only one of them and I'm poor...

But my Quietkey is competent enough. Beats black alps for me at least, YMMV.

JO!

The point I am making is that it's just incredible, lovely fun to type on my mech. I think I said it before that with the Das, I often find myself re-typing an entire word or my login details instead of using auto complete because it's fun to do so and it was incredible to me, how ****ty my rubber dome logitech at work suddenly felt. I never noticed what **** I was putting up with untill my eyes were opened
(http://writer-4-hire.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/EYEOPENER2.jpg)

Now it is just a pain to type on it every time I do ...

And yes, that's a cool story, not as cool as pylo put it, but still keeewl :D

Basically I am trying to say is we need sth like this:

(if someone could photoshop some keyboards into the hands of those crusaders, that'd be neado, I can't photoshop for ****)

And then make all those non believers open their eyes.
It's unbelievable how difficult it is at work to get people to understand the awesomeness of mech keyboards. Even if they typed on mine, the only thing they were able to say was "oh, there are no letters on it" or "oh, it's US layout". Friggin buffoons :D

Good mechanical > good rubber dome > bad mechanical.

The problem with rubber domes is that most of 'em are cheap and nasty.

An above average '90s rubber dome board certainly is nicer than something with black Alps. If the mech board is a Model M or something with Cherry blues, that's a different story...
