Title: I'm baaaaaaack... maybe
Post by: Kavik on Sun, 18 June 2023, 10:02:56
With the exception of one moment of weakness last September, I've been away from Geekhack for a little over a year. What have I missed? Is tp4tissue on the carnivore diet now? Are there any new ridiculous keyboard trends? I saw that Ellipse is finally making 104 key and SSK versions of his Model F, which make my F77 totally obsolete, and a new beamspring.

There are more and more custom Electrostatic Capacitive keyboard options becoming available as of late.  That's kinda new

I can't believe it's been two years since I posted this (within 1 day, what a coincidence that I just thought to check back in today!).

I keep meaning to return, but I never think about it when I'm actually sitting at the 'puter.

How is everybody?

The hughmahns are mostly fine. There is food, and water.

Politics weighing down, resultant of the ecological realities of mankind's actions.

All good here.  Still keyboarding. Still more variety and availability of mechanical keyboards and parts than ever before.

The community has yet to embrace the true next gen induction rod keeb technology, which makes all other switch types obsolete.

Glad you're doing well!

I have to admit that my interest in keyboards has diminished significantly. I never quite got my "endgame" and just learned to be happy with what I have, I guess. But when I have looked at newer stuff, I have been mystified by all the variety of things. I have some catching up to do.

As a follow-up to this https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=124086 I concluded that the keyboard market is ****e and focused on repairing my AEK. (By 'focused' I mean I'll do it soon™). I bought a Niz for the time being.

I just read through your thread, and that is a little depressing. I don't mind building a keyboard, but waiting on group buys is really annoying if that's the only way to get something high quality.

My experience with pre-built stuff is to go with the name brands, not the niche keyboard geek stuff. There's always some weird firmware issue where it doesn't wake from computer sleep, or it loses connection randomly during use, or it's not recognized by the BIOS/UEFI before the OS loads. Even my RAMA U80A just randomly re-flashes itself to default settings every once in a while. I never had any of those issues with my Cooler Master Quick Fire TK (I've been using that thing since 2013, and I still use it at work all day) or even "cheap" Rosewill. They aren't all metal tanks, but they work forever.

One thing I missed while I was away is that Corsair owns Geekhack now! That is weird.

I was reading the Corsair Wikipedia page and saw that it bought (Mass)Drop in 2023 and thereby Geekhack.
