Title: Unicomp Customizer / SpaceSaver measurements
Post by: woody on Fri, 15 October 2010, 08:31:31
Those fine gents that might posses such keyboards - would they be so kind to measure the distance between the red dots as shown on the pictures?

Unicomp says that the SpaceSaver is about 20% narrower than the Customizer, but the keycaps are the same. That means that the key grid has been reduced, and I'd like to compare with the Filco I'm currently so comfortable with.

TIA

See all that bezel to the left of the alphanumericals and to the right of the numpads on the Customizer? That's what they shaved off. The bezel between the alphanumeric cluster, Del-Pgdown cluster, and the numpad cluster also look slightly narrower. It also doesn't have the massive space above the F-keys as on the Customizer/Model M.

The Spacesaver is around the same width as your average fullsize keyboard.

They actually say it's 20% smaller, not shorter.  I suppose they're talking about footprint rather than length.

Shorter in terms of width, depth but not height.

The SpaceSavers are surprisingly close in size to Customizers. If you're really worried about footprint, something like a Filco makes much more sense.

Still, not sure why you wouldn't get a SpaceSaver over a Customizer. The Model M shell has a gargantuan amount of wasted space in it.

Thanks all for the info. I already have a Filco tenkeyless, so that's hard to beat. :)

I'm close to ordering one Unicomp, so I was considering the details. I prefer the Customizer over the SpaceSaver because it doesn't have useless OS keys, and thus larger and properly centered spacebar. And yep, the space wasted on the Customizer is bit more, but seems the SpaceSaver doesn't win much. I've misread the 20% figure.

SpaceSaver has one more negative - the plastic cover of the EnduraPro mouse buttons. It will collect dirt, and be probably felt by my nervous fingers.

Right. Have to rethink once more how bad I want a BS. Anyone to offer me a reasonable NIB Model M Space Saver? :)
