I received my hhkb and love it. thanks for everyone who helped with the decision. Now i have a few questions about it.
What does sw6(wake up) do? allow ur kb to wake up ur comp?
i think the answer is no but ill ask anyways. can i remap the arrow keys to pl' or wasd? also could i remap the layout to default colemak so i dont have to worry about switching layouts at lan which sometimes dosnt allow you to edit admin stuff like that?
also i love the texture of the keys and was wondering if any custom keycap manu make them like that? id like to have a custom red panic(esc) key, and instead of ~ i mapped it to terminal so id like the keycap to be >_, and turn return into EXECUTE.
also prehaps have cntrl, tab, shift, delete, and fn in white text so i could see them better. while the 30 a-z and chara keys blank which filco sell but are sold out at the moment.
Im placing my hhkb atop my laptop keyboard and noticed that the bottom of the hhkb heats up a bit? will anything happen bad?
-
do you make those pics urself?
the website wasnt helpful. know any good custom keycap places?
-
The Wake Up setting is for the Mac I believe.
On Windows machine, it doesn't do anything
-
I had to put DIP switch 6 to On so I could wake my Windows PC from standby by pressing a key on the HHKB.
-
anyone answer the last question? anyone uses their hhkb atop there laptop kb?
-
It will ruin everything forever (it should be fine)

wat is the meta key useful for beside some emac commands?
-
Do people really change their DIP settings enough to warrant having to "bone up" on them?
I have only ever configured the settings once by the DIP switches, ensuring that I have backspace above enter.
-
Actually I randomly set other people's keyboard DIPs for the lulz.
Sadly I don't know anyone else who has a DIP switch enabled board.
Got those Media (sound vol/mute) keys to work yet?
Use a Griffin Powermate, they are cool.
-
My CH Trackballs have TWO separate DIP setting blocks depending on Model number.
I Pity The Fool who buys those from me on Ebay in 20 years. I'll sell the trackballs then charge double for the instruction sheet.
In some senses I have found it difficult to see the apparent obsession of many people with DIP switches, however I am beginning to see that they are good for many people. I suppose that the ability to hard-change the layout of the board is a rather useful thing for people who are constantly moving the board from machine to machine. I have to say that the HHKB was the first board that made me interested in high-quality input devices.
-
The media keys work fine on my Mac, but I haven't figured out how to get them to work on my PC.
-
Media keys do not work in Windows; they send Mac-specific scancodes. Any of the legends that are in italics are Mac-specific; Delete has cross-platform use, so it has both legends.

The Eject key sends a code that manages to sneak past Windows' security. AutoHotKey reports it as VK 83 / SC 06B / F20.
Edit> Power key gets through too, VK 5E / SC 15E.
-
Huh. I hadn't tried that one. I was really hoping the volume controls were going to work when I bought it.
-
i got a new issue with my hhkb. sometimes i hear the rubber cup bounce up. its not very often. is this unusual?
-
so nothing life threatening.

any word on where i can get some custom hhkb keys?
-
I would almost consider purchasing a HHKB over a FILCO or whatever and just save a bit longer to AFFORD one ('cuz they be a lot of money), but all that DIP switch stuff sounds really confusing. -_-

Nah, don't worry about the DIP switches on the HHKB. Just like Ron says: "You set it and...forget it!"
People like ripster only make the DIP switches seem confusing because they are bitter and angry that PFU Fujitsu and Topre Corp have successfully been selling keyboards for premium prices with archaic tecnhology, not to mention Topre's apparent lack of innovation.
To me, DIP switches do not significantly impact how I use the HHKB; I am not a hacker (but I am happy). I'm still patiently waiting for the HHKB Professional X with flash memory and dedicated arrow keys...but I'm not holding my breath.
-
I set all my DIP switches at the half way point. I hate decision making.
-
To be fair on PFU, they did level the playing field. The media keys only worked on the Mac if they downloaded the driver. The driver is not available for current versions of MacOS. And the download link is broken anyway. Balance is restored!

What's "Clear"?
It works as NumLock you fool. Isn't that obvious???
-
Now that's beyond Otaku. Having NumLock but no numpad, not even embedded.
-
why even HAVE mac mode?
hipster 'geeks'...

@ custom topre caps - custom topre keycaps are even harder to come by than cherry ones, unless you count the blank sets elitekeyboards carries. Makes sense, since one really only gets topre caps more as custom, than replacement necessities and unless topre or ClickClack is making them, they are likely inferior to the stock caps.
If you have money to burn, good luck cutting in line with ClickClack or ordering a bulk custom set from overseas.
-
So on the HHKB, the key that would usually be a caps lock key is a control key? Is that for reducing RSI or something? That's the only thing I can think of.
That would be so weird for gaming, if control would be bound to crouching or whatever.
-
Unplug, flip switch, plug in. No rebooting needed to change any settings.
And I don't think I'll ever have to change my switches again after just a couple bouts of fiddling with them. Really not a big deal at all. I'll let you know which ones I flipped, and I can tell you that it works perfectly on a PC and a Mac, as I switch back and forth quite often. I swing both ways.
Haven't run it in Linux, but I imagine there wouldn't be any dip switching necessary.

what do you mean by dedicated arrow keys? if you mean what i think you mean what is wrong with current ones?

I game on my HHKB and use shift for crouch and ctrl for walk.

OMG
my wrist rest is sold out and remove from products on filco right before im about to get it.
http://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=access,palm_rests&pid=fkbprmb
please tell me ill come back. im srsly about to cry about a wrist rest.
but some good news it that black hhkb are in stock.
http://www.elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=access,keycaps&pid=pdkb400ktbn
also is it perfectly safe to remove keycaps and put new ones in. im newbie and afraid to mess with such an expensive keyboard. already it seems like some of the keys are a bit out of line but its by some mm and i have ocd(joke maybe).
-
even thou the wrist rest is sold out it can still add to cart and pay for it. will this mean i can get it or they will later tell me then are out of stock.
also found another place to buy it. is it trusted?

Hi Scott,
I've taken apart a FILCO palm rest (because I didn't trust the
description from the Chinese factory) and it does appear to be leather,
but it is a thin composite; meaning they've taken leather, ground it up,
then reformed it and layered it with a fiber backing and a polyurethane
coating; so it has some properties of leather, but i don't consider it a
high quality leather product; albeit the construction is reasonable
solid. However, this product will only be available for another couple
of weeks until it is sold out. It will be replaced (in 2 weeks time) by
a new medium size palm rest that is handmade in Japan of 100% genuine
leather (top and bottom); which will cost a bit more, but feels and
smells worth the money.
Best regards,.

I dont for natural leather or not. The price going up and im out.
also so is it perfectly safe to pull keys out and put next ones in.
-
lol. I just got my 3star medium wrist rest today with a Filco Tenkeyless Linear Force NKRO in the mail from elitekeyboards.
...
I wish that the base of the pad had some sort of rubber feet or something, because the leather alone cannot keep the pad firmly planted. It can slide around rather easily. I suppose that it is not really an issue when you have your arms resting on it, but I digress. Overall, I'm glad I got it because the Filco sits kind of high so typing without a rest can be uncomfortable. Looks really classy on the desk.
this might be real problem since i game with wasd shift ctrl space i cant have the wrist rest running from me.
-
The cheaper non 3-star but still dead cow one has a nice sticky rubber pad.
you mean the filco available here:
http://www.keyboardco.com/keyboard_details.asp?PRODUCT=634
also does the rift in the middle bother anyone? and will shipping cost a bunch since they are in london?
-
Yep, that one. I have it but not the fancier one.
fancier one? also does the rift bother you?
-
The HHKB keys are no more or less wobbly than the Realforce.
-
The two level wrist pad isn't bad, but if it gets annoying you can just turn it around. Then you don't have to worry about the two layer feeling

what is the two levels for?
also does signature plastics make keycaps for the hhkb?
-
im leanin towards splurging on a 3-Star Medium.
http://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=access,palm_rests&pid=hm_prmb
there seems to be plenty of complaints towards the filco medium.

I downloaded my driver from elitekeyboards ... works great with 10.6.4

I'm not sure what they intend them for, but I use it for different levels of keyboards. Some of mine feel better with the higher side closer to them, and others feel better with it away.
-
do i have to take care of the leather occasionally? also will the leather cause my hand to sweat? some materials cause my hand to sweat like the mx518 plastic.
-
The newer ones are not but should "weather to a natural patina".
I just threw up in my mouth.
