I'm sure we can get together and find a movie that we can all watch at roughly the same time on Geekhack, either on or slightly before Halloween. Good opportunity for a party thread, or maybe we can all get together on freenode (though I have no idea what that is) and enjoy it together.
Soooo, any ideas on what movie we should watch together? I was thinking maybe Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)?

My vote is for A Nightmare on Elm Street (the first one).
-
A webcam of MW's basement.
TOO SCARY!

Hahahahahaha. Just sitting there watching him sit on 3.1 would be murder.
And I'm down for Nightmare, if that's what the people want. I'm populist.

Event Horizon.
-
No, anything but Event Horizon. It's like the worst movie I've ever seen. It's not even scary. It's mostly just moist. And it's not "it's so bad it's good" like Plan 9 From Outer Space or something. It's just annoying.
I'd go for something fun, like Shaun of the Dead, Reanimator, Dead Alive, etc.
Pan's Labyrinth is another idea that comes to mind.
-
And I don't mean to dump on your suggestion, but Event Horizon is one of two movies that I so actively hate that I go out of my way to tell people how much I hate it.
The other is Oleanna. You'd think, being a David Mamet gig, it couldn't really suck that bad. But man, it had a cast of exactly two characters, and they're the two least likable people in the history of cinema. I wish William H. Macy had beat that chick to a pulp with that chair, then broke off a leg and drove it through his own skull. Yeah, that's right, I just spoiled the ending. Trust me, you don't want to see it. Oh my GOD, you don't want to waste your life on that movie.

The Human Centipede :)

The Human Centipede takes horror to a new level. it's one of the grossest films I have ever seen it's also very controversial because it was banned all over the world upon release.

Hellraiser is one of my favorite Horror movies because of the characters. now in days all we have are reboots with violence that miss the characters completely.
-
here's a quick mix of **** to watch:
- pontypool
- Ôdishon(audition)
- Creepshow
- the descent (uncut, NOT North American version)
- [rec]
- the mist (cheesy monsters, but that's not the point of the flick)
- pumpkinhead (hilarious)
- Martyrs
- delicatessen(black comedy fits the season)
- re-animator (they just dont make cheese-gore this good in the digital age)
- ginger snaps (creative symbolism in a not-bad film)
- the monster squad (kicks "the goonies" in the nards)
- Poltergeist (classic)
-
nice list. Puppet Masters remember that one? :)
-
You mean PuppetMaster (no plural)? I do, vaguely... I actually remember not liking it.
I heard of a remake of "The Gate" recently, to be done by Alex Winter (Bill S. Preston, ESQ!), that might be cool (I loved that movie when I was a kid).

Is it any good tho? Being gross doesnt necessarily make it a good horror film. Trailer looks interesting.
My vote is for Battle Royal. Nothing like a bloody japanese horror/thriller :D

Puppet Master (also known as Puppetmaster and Puppet Master I) is a 1989 horror film written by Charles Band and Kenneth J. Hall, and directed by David Schmoeller.

it's not gory. it's the portrayal of human suffering. it makes movies like Saw and Hostel look like Sesame street. download or rent it.

?
Im confused, IS that the flick you were talking about? I don't really think I liked it.
-
I might have to check out that Human Centipede...
wait ...
100% medically accurate?? hahahahhaha
I wonder how accurate it is that, during the whole flick, no one kicked this dude in the ****ing balls, bit his face or some other wicked ****.
But Ill check it out.
-
The Human Centipede sequel coming in 2011.
-
hahaha funniest trailer ever ... Ill have to re-watch that
-
I would describe The Human Centipede as being one of those things that is so ****ed up you have to watch it. that simple.

I saw the Human Centipede and I didin't find it scary. I found it disturbing, gross, and not something I would ever want to watch again. I do not reccomend it at all.

I liked it :)

Is it because, in the final scene, the guy presents them with an outrageous bill for services rendered?
That's what happens when you don't have universal healthcare...

Actually the film is set in Germany. If that's what they call universal healthcare...

People tend to get curious about these types of movies. This movie's in the 'torture porn' genre with movies like Hostel, Salo, Funny Games, etc. Some people like that kind of stuff, but I don't. I prefer fun horror movies (mostly the ones made in the 80s and early 90s.) Torture porn would ruin my Halloween :(
Instantkamera mentioned some others that I like: The Descent, Re-Animator, Ginger Snaps and The Monster Squad. I wouldn't mind watching any of them.
-
Salo damn near made me want to barf.
-
-
- delicatessen(black comedy fits the season)
:hail: :hail: :hail: :hail: :hail:
Not scary/horror, but a true movie masterpiece.
For some fun horror, try Fronti?re(s) (2007) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0814685/). Or Drag Me to Hell (2009) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1127180/).

Silent Night Deadly Night
Hard Ticket to Hawaii
or maybe Santa's Slay

That's exactly the kind of fun, campy stuff I like. Great clips!!

Kubrick's 'The Shining'.
That is all...

Here's a good scary movie for you all. Click on the picture to watch it.

I would suggest many films, however they would all be in the 'torture porn' category as per the definitions made apparent in this thread. Salo is not really a scary film, it is a film that might disgust people; this is distinct from being scary.
A movie that is designed to scare would probably consist of sudden events that are set in a somewhat sinister however probably over-dramatised manner.
Snuff 102 would be somewhat of a good cross over between the categories, however less scary than a lot of typically 'horror' movies it is more scary than something like Salo or August Underground.
Perhaps somewhat more scary would be something like Necromentia, this is somewhat mainstream and is lacking in gore.
Perhaps some of the typical movies such as Friday 13th series or Texas Chainsaw Massacre. These are somewhat lacking in gore however are more likely to be scary.
It really depends on what you want to see. We all have the Internet, we are all desensitised. I am no longer shocked, disgusted or appalled at anything that I see, however I can still be scared or startled by something that is relatively innocuous; I suppose that it is the task of the film crew to ensure that this is presented in a film.
If you have guests then make sure you play a film that will disgust them; if they are polite then it is likely that the whole idea of objecting in front of everyone will be abhorrent to them, thus they will be forced by their own lack of strength to sit through something that they don't enjoy. For a bit of fun you might consider the Slumberparty Massacre series, they are terrible in a classical B-movie way.

Never thought I would see August Underground mentioned on Geekhack! Good list. Gonna check out Snuff 102.
Salo upset me on a lot of levels, and I couldn't really process it while I was watching it. I just kind of had to laugh at it. Men Behind the Sun, though, was a movie that angered me by how much it disgusted me. August Underground Mordum bored me, as it was like watching a bad internet skit go on for 90 minutes with nary a frame of good in it. It was just trying to be upsetting and it was failing, at least in my book.

But I suppose that the point is: what do you want out of a film? In some ways the proliferation of these so called 'torture porn' films is to fill a gap in the market, however what is that gap? Do these films have a beautiful allegory juxtaposed with brutal violence? Usually they don't. Are the people that are watching these films doing so for sexual gratification that they cannot get from some other source? I doubt it. It is my suspicion that a lot of these films are popular merely for the obvious reason that we can all, after having watched them, be cool and name drop the 'worst of the worst' and say 'I saw it and laughed'. This is not really a bad thing, it is just supply and demand. I like watching the films, not to name drop (but then I am cooler than cool because I am undermining the thing that makes cool people cool).
I suppose that my point might be interpreted that if one wants to be 'upset' then why choose a fictional tale? I suppose those tales are are linked into a real-life situation could evoke (in the more empathetic of us) a level of 'upset' that is due to imagining that this is indeed what happened. If you want this then there are many movies (Ed Gein: Butcher of Plainfield, Raising Jeffrey Dahmer, The Secret Life of Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, The Green River Killer, etc.) which depict a tale that could evoke 'upset'. In some ways it is all down to mentality, anyone who has seen videos of real murders can see that they aren't really dramatic enough, in general, for some Hollywood blockbuster, however often some of the more specialist films can get the depiction fairly accurate; often at the expense of a story.
It all probably comes down to the issue of why which watch films in the first place. If a person watches films to make them 'upset' or 'shocked' then I suggest that they might invest some time into trying to think about what might actually shock them or make them upset. I suppose that if asked why I watch the genre of films that I usually watch I would probably argue that most other films sicken me, I want the 'enemy' to triumph, why must our films conform to the monotonous toil that societal living can be? I would be cautious to use the term escapism due to the connotations with escaping reality, however perhaps it is a form of escapism that is restricted to society. There is a fine line between playing a character and becoming a character.
-
I just don't like these torture porn films because I simply don't enjoy watching them - I find nothing enjoyable about them. To me a film is meant to be enjoyed. Also, shock cinema doesn't impress me and nor does shock music or any other form of 'shock' media. It's too gimmicky and doesn't have much of an artistic feel to it.
-
To compare a couple movies, I'd just have to say that Men Behind the Sun had a bit of an arc to it, while Mordum was just a compilation of murders. There was some emotional investment, no matter how small, that I had in the outcome of MBtS that I didn't have when getting through Mordum.
No matter how often I watch the shock films, I always find myself remembering the movies that really scared me when I watched them. Night of the Living Dead, Texas Chainsaw, the first Friday the 13th, Halloween, all scared the daylights out of me. I still turn on the hall light after watching one of those movies because my subconscious is on guard, even after decades of knowing that all I'm watching is a movie.
-
The movie [Rec] is pretty good. It is in Spansih, though, but that's what subtitles are for and Geekhackers sure do love reading. (The American remake, Quarantine, is not as good.)
-
Horror films no longer have any effect on me since I started watching the news.
-
This is a homage to a movie, but not a horror flick, only an adventure one. But I thought it's one of the most impressive things on YouTube, so I wanted to mention it somewhere:
And, thinking of Ripster, here's a clip I found which proves that Zooey Deschanel really is more famous than even Katy Perry:
Despite the title, it's not really NSFW; I have no idea if that's the real Katy Perry or if this is just an amateur humor production.

"hijinx laake this is part of me bag" lol

Has anyone heard of Hausu (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076162/)? I just heard about this today and want to watch it really bad. It looks awesome. You can check out some clips from it on Youtube by searching the name "Hausu".
