Hello and welcome to my debut set: GMK Cosmos.
A black on black set using GMK’s custom, special-effects plastics.
Cosmos is black with iridescent dust.

Changelog
August 19, 2024 - The following changes have been made based on community feedback and my own decision after seeing samples. Please fill out the new IC Form in main post.


NOTABLE CHANGES

Colors:
- Base is Cosmos and Legends are CR = Black
- Accents keys are: CR base with Cosmos legends
- The samples of CR legends on Cosmos base are really good. I originally proposed the opposite because I did not want a super sparkly set and I prefer a less-is-more approach to design. Well, GMK did an amazing job with these samples and they are still very subtle, dark, and low contrast.
- Look at the real sample images and zoom in.
- Please fill out the new form with updated kitting options etc

Kitting

Cosmic Base - Base Kit:
- Moved alice spacebars and extra B in base.
- Moved 4-key 40’s keys in base: R2 1u Esc, R2 1.75u Backspace, R3 1.25u Tab, and R3 1.5u Enter.
- Added accent keys: 2u Numpad Enter, R4 1u Fn
- Added a second 2.25u Shift

Cosmic Dust - Extension:
- Added shine-thru caps: R1 1u Num Lock, R3 non-step Caps Lock with smoky windows to further align with the dark aesthetic
- Added 2x 1u Spacebars, 1.25u spacebar, 6u centered spacebar
- Added BAE
- Added novelty R1 1u Cosmic Cherry icon

Meteorites - Blanks:
- 15 blanks of Cosmos R1-R4
- Do with them whatever you’d like.
- So many people wanted blanks and many wanted macros compatibility, this should satisfy both!


Cosmic Lexicon - Standard European Kit:
- Taking advantage of GMK's new offering with a low 50 MOQ
- I hope the European community takes advantage of this. Share and ask for support so vendors and designers continue offering compatibility for you.

Some people prefer having an accent on that key, especially on TKL setups. These folks may choose to put an artisan on Insert instead of Esc or the top-right cluster, and so on... It's a key that's not used (often, if at all) in practice, so it makes it practical to put an accent there.

Great design idea! Any chance of entertaining the idea of making a kit where all the alphas sparkly and the mods aren't? I think if it's on alphas instead of mods, then it'll look like you're peaking into space and your keyboard is the telescope :)

Just like LightningX1 said :) I really like seeing a TKL with a single artisan or accent key to replace the Insert key instead of the more common Esc. By including it here I hope to introduce a whole lot more people to it.

I do understand your sentiment. I wish I had real samples of my design in hand but for now we have these renders and the other sample keys to help convey my idea. I appreciate everyone's imaginative flexibility and I hope you all see what my vision for this set is.

I love this idea. Would almost certainly buy if not for current kitting. No spacebars in liquid black accent seems like a missed opportunity. I would probably cut the 3u bars and Win95 keys from Meteoroids and just push the rest into the base kit. Then you could add a comprehensive accent bars kit, or maybe one kit with big bars (6, 6.25, and 7u) and a separate mini bars kit. I can't imagine many Alice users will want to buy Meteoroids for split bars and a B. Anyone who wants the windowed lock keys probably doesn't need any other key in the kit. And 40s users are not big fans of buying a large child kit that's basically just 4-key support. You really need a more comprehensive 40s kit for that to make sense.

Anyway, like I said, love the idea. Wish it was kitted for me. GLWIC.

+1 on 40s kitting. 1u tab, ctrl, shifts, backspace, etc. They might be lurking the kitting, but squinting isn't making it much easier to read  ;D

They feel just as good as the GMK you are used to today, no difference in texture. They look really good and I find myself staring at them from multiple angles just to see the special effects plastics in different lighting. From a normal typing distance without harsh lighting, they usually look like black blanks, but a deeper black. The black on black is so good and I think this set is uniquely dark. I will be at Mode Meetup in Boston on July 14th and yes, I will bring samples with me  :cool: I will share more info in the following weeks.

New pictures look nice, but I think I'd prefer the sparkly legends on the black base. Unless maybe it turns out there are so few sparkles if CR is the base that you can't even notice them? It'll be interesting to see your other samples.

Definitely going to make a decision based on samples and overall interest. GMK is working on those samples now. Probably a couple of weeks before I have them in hand and maybe another week for pics to get scheduled.

From what I've read in this thread, it would almost make more sense to move the windowed keys and win95 keys to the Meteoroids kit, and leave spacebars and macro key Cosmic Dust as a compatibility kit. 40's people don't want the add-on keys, and I would assume most add-on people would be fine with macro keys (I am the latter). I would be interested to see MLB on CR before making a decision on main CW, but I would buy the kits either way.

There is not enough interest for Hangul and it was a joke to begin with lol
There is little interest for R0 and R5 but definitely not enough to justify adding whole kit for that. Complicates things way too much. That said, feedback has been really good and there is plenty of interest to run Cosmos. Kitting is being reworked and I think a lot of people are going to be happy with the options we will have. Changes include: Will have alice bars and B in base and 4-key 40's in base The other kit(s) are still being refined. Definitely keeping the windowed keys and the Win95 keys because they're so cool! Might even have smokey windows  :cool:

There will be no novelties kit but there are going to be plenty of artisan keycap makers collaborating with me to bring everyone some really beautiful works of art.

Oh, also working on a second deskmat with a subtle, minimal design.

MLB base with CR legends looks really, really good and is still very subtle compared to CR base with MLB legends. Might not even need the accent keys which are just swapped colors, this would lower the cost a little bit. As you can see from the pics compared to WoB (not renders), MLB basically looks like CR from most angles. It's only in certain lighting where the colorful specks are visible. Everyone who sees the samples in person really like the MLB base. Trust me when I say I do not want a super sparkly set, I like the less-is-more aesthetic, and the MLB base with CR legends is super clean. GMK did a great job working with me on this  :thumb: I should be at KeebLife with samples!

I too am surprised you’re barely seeing this given your track record lol. Your comment makes it sound like there is no 65 compatibility. I mostly use 65s and imo all the keys needed are in the base kit. For the right column on 65s/75s I typically go R1 Home/Delete, R2 PgUp, R3 PgDn, R4 Fn/End. If I have a top right blocker/badge 65, then sans Home/Delete. If it’s a 65 with a 2u blocker like Think65 variants or similar, then I use whatever keys available since that is such a weird layout. On top of that, we can always remap keys to whatever we like, even if one or two caps don’t match what’s under the hood. Furthermore, Cosmos is a very low contrast set where the legends shouldn’t be deal breakers. I also offer the blanks kit to cover anything else. You can even fill that right column with artisans. I promise I tired to cover all the bases and make as many people happy.

Were the keys I mentioned included in an earlier draft of the kitting? I could swear I took a gander when you first posted the IC, was like “set looks great”, even told a few friends about it — only to come back yesterday and see that they're missing. :P It's quite possible that I mistook some other two R3/R4 keys for my beloved PgUp/PgDn, given the low visibility of the legends (especially back when the colors were flipped). And yeah, you're right, it won't be that noticeable, and blanks are always an option. I'll live.

By the way, the reason why I'm such a big proponent of that particular right column setup is that I always use split Backspace on everything. In that case R1 `~, R2 Delete, R3 PgUp, R4 PgDn just makes too much sense, and it's what I've been using ever since I got into the hobby (65% being my daily driver layout for most of that time). I did this little analysis (https://imgur.com/tKSXZLN) a few years ago, and back then it was super popular. It would be nice to redo that analysis with the updated qmk_userspace repo and see how usage trends have evolved over the past 3 years; I might get around to that sometime soon.

BAE has physical support. Plus you can already barely see the legends so in use that is an insignificant issue. As someone that loves BAE, I see no reason to add an extra key that you won't even be able to read for the sake of it.

Back in July there was an ALT option for textured black keys and iridescent blue or red characters. Is this no longer an available option?

Those were just some samples that GMK had but the goal was always to have multicolor iridescence.
