Title: Board Games
Post by: phinix on Tue, 12 March 2024, 06:24:23
I wonder how many of you here play board games?
I thought I would start my board games thread here (if not had one already).

These are the games I own:

Also don't own there but played at friends' house:

For me (and my missus) best one is Everdell, which we just have purchased. This is most beautifully made one we have seen, amazing make, also, great scenario and story. Gameplay is great too, lots of cards which adds to its "randomness".
Second best for us would be Castles of Burgundy, then Catan and Stone Age.

What board games do you have?
Which is your favourite one?
Which one you would like to have in your collection, or waiting to be released?

My old roommate was super into board games. Catan was a mainstay, but we also really enjoyed Cosmic Encounters (https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/cosmic-encounter/). More or less multiplayer "war" and the rules are designed to be broken via the specific races so every game is unique. The Firefly board game based on the show was also another fun game, but there is an advantage to those who have played before.

Currently, my kids like playing Exploding Kittens and Uno.

I haven't played board games in years (decades) but really enjoyed Cosmic Encounters back in the late-1970s!

That was probably my favorite game ever. I understand that it has evolved considerably as a cult item over the years.

I used to play a lot of Small World, Citadels, and Catan back in college.
Never liked Catan though, I always found it wildly unbalanced.

I have Wingspan on PC via Steam and love that game, although I nearly always get destroyed playing online.

Whoever picks locations first so often has an unfair advantage. The way my friends and I played was resource and dice role tokens were randomly placed upside down on the map. Each player picks a dock/port to start from and you have to work your way inland. every game so super unique because you could get stuck with all of say brick on your side of the map so it forces trades more.

Never heard abotu this game. Will have to check it out. If its from 70s, then wondering if they refreshed it or does it exist as it was released back then.

As I understand it, there has been considerable evolution and expansion, but I am out of the loop.

With the release of Dune Part II, I've been itching to play the Dune board game again. I might have even talked about it in previous threads; I find it very fun if you're familiar with the lore.

Otherwise, deception and hidden information games are my usual go-tos as work because they're easy to explain and fast to run. Avalon is the bees knees

For a couple: Castles of Burgundy. But there's 1 flaw. There is one board that's better than all the others...hehe

Well i played a lot of them... catan, puerto rico, dead of winter, pandemic, game of thrones and more...

But the one i keep coming back to is the vanilla Catan. I played hundreds of games...

There is this competitive component in trading/Backstabbing/tactics that is really interesting. Once you have a group of people that keep playing together the game becomes intense.

puerto rico

I played Puerto Rico a couple times. That's one is fun, but bordering on too complicated for a casual game night.
I've a few games I bought like that, upon opening them, it was just too daunting for a group to learn for a fun night of boards and beers. Steam comes to mind, we opened the box up and noped out after seeing all the pieces and rule book like a dictionary. Still never played it even once.

Hey Noisy :)
Yeah, Puerto Rico is fun, but yes a bit too much to just start with someone who doesnt know the rules and have fun night.

For this, I would suggest Imhotep - very easy and can be picked up at one round. Good for fun with friends at the party.

Everdell sounds interesting-might have to check it out. My favorite is probably Terraforming Mars, love the strategy there.

Everdell is on my wishlist, but I heard it can be a bit slow? Lately been playing Dune: Imperium a lot, such a good mix of deck-building and worker placement. You might like it if you enjoy strategy-heavy games.

Slow?! Like how slow? If you play with 4 players then maybe you wait for your turn, but it is not that slow.

Keep playing Brass, really good, my favourite.
I even modded the coin tokens :D
Game has 1,5 and 15, but for some reason they did not think this through as that 15 should have been 10 - rarely used 15 as its too much for constant changing.
So I mad a simple change in Gimp, made 10 out of 15 and printed stickers and sticked them to 15 coins. AWESOME MOD :D
