Hi there! just caught the mechanical bug and i'm looking to purchase my first mechanical. i was hoping some more experienced users could help me decide between a FILCO 104 ten key with cherry brown switches or a Steelseries 6Gv2 with the cherry black switches. the keyboard will be used for Starcraft 2 mostly, but i do also play many FPS games and enjoy typing at a high rate. the stiffness of the black is one concern, but wouldn't the tactile feedback be excellent for SC2? it seems many top korean players use cherry browns, and some even cherry blues. any thoughts?
side note: i'm currently on a lolcosa. i won it at a LAN and was actually pretty impressed with it at first, but the keys feel really bad after a lot of wear.

Welcome to Geekhack! The blacks are completely linear - no tactile feedback at all. The browns have a tactile 'bump'.

I transitioned from a Lycosa my friend bought me for xmas (lasted a good almost 2 years) and purchased a Filco Brown. Besides the squeaky backspace key due to stabilizers (too afraid to pull out big keys to fix it), it was a great transition as its great for use in both gaming and typing (I'm a compsci student so i type a lot). As for the tactile feedback, If you're just transitioning from a rubber dome, you will be bottoming out on the keys, especially in a game like sc2, so you wont even notice that tactile feedback. Its only noticeable if you type somewhat slow, trying not to bottom out the keys. And yes, sc2 is fun to play with these baby.

Oh, you came here asking for opinions. :) Mine is that browns are the safe choice and will probably leave you quite satisfied.

lol, can you repost the screenshot? i had stumbled upon something about mechanical keyboards in reddit.com/r/starcraft a while back and last night while watching GSL i saw HopeTorture's Pink Filco and decided it was time. i think i'm going to go with the 6Gv2 but still haven't decided... thanks for the post !

I've met many easygoing African Americans and many who are willing to share their thoughts. Perhaps you shouldn't let your past experiences cloud your judgment.

OP: I would recommend browns more, not for the tactility, but for them being lighter of the blacks. I really doubt when you're playing starcraft that you will worry about only pressing the key halfway (thus needing the bump).

To be serious and to quit nitpicking at word choice, I think MX browns are infinitely better than MX blacks.
I don't own a black keyboard but I've used a G80 with the magswipe reader plenty and MX black switches are way too heavy for my tastes. I hate them.

haha - nice sig. Although FruitDealer also uses a Filco Zero. Too bad Elite doesn't sell those.

That was my bad - I identified it as a Majestouch with browns in the original TL thread based on the screenshot from the finals. Apparently the Zero with Alps appears outwardly identical which I did not know at the time.
I don't feel bad though, cause I think most folks think the Majestouch is a better keyboard than the Zero and cherries are better than alps. And anyway, if you listen to some of the other season 2 qualifier videos, there are other top players with Filcos that appear to have browns, e.g. sSKS (AKA Tester) and CheckPrime (a pink one). And a couple other players (including SlayersBoxer) are using the iOne Scorpius M10 which has blues.
It looks like he's had the Zero long enough to polish they keys pretty well, and it's not just from heavy play. The right side of the keyboard is hardly used in Starcraft 2.

I posted a video in the other thread where you saw the brown switch because the enter key was removed.
Personally I think he uses Browns, everything else would be kind of stupid.

Hey now, I made my ID during the finals of season 1, that video came from the qualifiers from season 2. Also, I had only visuals to work with as the players and their equipment were in sound-proof booths.
And can anyone say I did the wrong thing? A bunch of nerds bought a very nice keyboard! How can that be a bad thing! I'm innocent I tell ya!

Can you even get a Zero anymore? Do they still make them? I don't know of anybody that carries them...

I vote Filco Majestouch with NKRO.
Thats not to say the steelseries is bad (heard it does NKRO), however you will be stuck with 1 choice of cherry black switches.
Filco has 3 choices, black, blue or brown. Not to mention i think it looks better overall :X
