CONSTANCE TKL
Split-plate, top mounted, F13 TKL
[attachimg=1]
1. Introduction
Hey everyone! I am PJ from Aiglatson Studio, Thailand. Meet Constance TKL, our first seamless, split plate, top-mounted, F13 TKL. Our goal for Constance was simple: to design a keyboard that we'd enjoy as a daily driver. It needs to look good, type well, and sounds great. There isn't a specific inspiration or theme behind Constance; its aesthetic is purely based on our personal preferences. We aimed for a clean, minimal design with subtle flair to catch your eye without being overly flashy. If you appreciate a straightforward top mount keyboard with clean, detailed designs, we hope Constance catches your interest!

2. Design Features
Top View
We kept the top face clean with 10.5 mm top bezels and 6.5 mm side bezels. However, by adding a 9-degree angle chamfer around the top edge (to create the HG sides), each bezel appears 1.8 mm thinner from the top. All corners and edges are filleted to give the top view a softer look.

[attachimg=3]
Side Profile
Initially, Constance came with a simple HG side, but we decided to add a subtle curvature to make the side profile more appealing and softer on the eye. This was a last-minute decision, but we ended up liking it more. It comes with a 9-degree typing and a EKH of 23.799 mm.
[attachimg=4]
[attachimg=5]
Constance comes with 3 pieces of weights: internal, external, and toblerone.
[attachimg=8]
Instead of having a constant fillet radius along the edges, we've made it variable, tapering to almost a sharp edge at the ends for a cleaner and tidier look.
[attachimg=6]
Mounting and plate
Constance features a top-mount design with split plates, similar to keyboards like the Glare TKL and Albatross TKL. This configuration separates the 60% cluster and the function row from the navigator cluster. During development, we experimented with both full and split plates and found that splitting the plates results in a higher-pitched and noticeably louder overall sound profile, which aligns with our preferences.
With the plates split, the layout becomes somewhat symmetrical. As a result, the mounting points are symmetrically positioned for a uniform typing feel but leave the spacebar area unmounted.
We've added cutouts between the function row and number row (only for aluminum and carbon fiber plates) to give the alphas a little more flex with harder plates.

Updates
1. Date 13/08/2024
Hello everyone, it's been a month since this IC was posted. We truly appreciate all your responses and feedback. Over the past month, based on our testing and your input, we've identified two major issues that needed to be addressed.
First, the mounting points: We noticed that the spacebar vibrated too much because the mounting points on the bottom were too far apart. To resolve this, we moved the mounting points closer to the spacebar and added two more mounts on the bottom and one on the top for extra stability. This modification successfully fixed the vibration issue without making the board too stiff (watch the sound test video for reference).
[attachimg=1]
Second, several IC responses raised concerns about the long feet causing a "thuddy" sound due to excessive vibration transferring from the board to the table, especially the spacebar. We tested this and found it to be true, even when typing on a desk mat. Our solution is to keep the feet long for aesthetics but elevate the area at the end of each foot, so there are only four contact points. This adjustment should give the keyboard a cleaner and poppier sound profile (watch the build stream for comparison). This feet design was inspired by the Della 960, and they were kind enough to give me their blessing to use it. Shout out to Jiwon from Della Key.

FINALLY THE BEST TKL
-
Bottom design looks CLEAN, looking forward to seeing more of this!
-
Really love the design on this, will be keeping my eye on it - GLWIC!
-
Hopefully my wallet is ready by the time it comes out, GLWIC, will get a cream unit if possible, looks gorgeous
-
Insane, good luck!
-
Looks great, keeping an eye on this. GLWIC
-
That bottom and side view is absolutely gorgeous with all the subtle details.
-
I like it.
-
Cool stuff PJ, very clean and elegant
Please could we have HHKB top? Would def buy if it's available

Very clean stuff again PJ, love the board.
GLWIC!
-
Looking good! I'd love to see an orange version too but understand there isn't as much demand for one. Purple looks amazing though
-
Love everything besides the front height. Feel like most people prefer the 16-18mm range.
-
Those require some sort of sacrifice, I think they're doing a great job with this.
-
Would love to see a raw version ;D great design! Can't wait to hear the sound profile!
-
Holy shmily, that is one clean asthetics. Despite being unsure about limited mounting options, still a potential banger.

So how much would a full brass version be?
i don't have a F13 and don't have a nice Dark Purple board so this could be something for me..
no foams in the Content .. so your pretty confident there is no sound shaping needed and this board has a good sound profile on Alu and PC.
i would also like to see a brass plate option.. For sum reason i like to have a brass on brass thick honking beast of an F13.. And because the hotswap pcb has as good of a version then solder aka split right shift.
Only one thing i would really like to see changed.. 6.25 space bar.. i don't need a big landing strip of a spacebar 6u is just fine ..
-
The cleanest booty I’ve ever seen. only gripe is that it looks like any other TKL from the top down. Good luck with IC.

My first reaction to my self after reading what you said .. Was something like "uhhh every TKL looks like a TKL top down"..
But after a couple of sec thinking i think you might have a point.. To me an F13 is not like every TKL so that's one..
Furthermore i think a tasteful LED bar not like the Cycle8 that looks like a noob learning how a cnc machine works haha..
Or a couple of smaller led bars or dots like 4 of them.. Both options needs to have a function like capsLock layer led you name it..
Other options to make this a TKL that stands out would be a total re-design as to make the top standout but frankly even that is already done.
Like a retro design model M style thick bezels . Or a pencil holder . Or ???..... i think really designing a unique TKL top view is hard really hard..
-
Definitely agree with the idea of a pen/pencil rail on top, or a tasteful little LED window, but it doesn't need to be extreme: this board is a piece of subtle beauty, no need to go to absurd lengths.
Think of Cindy Crawford's beauty mark, and that'd do it for Constance's entry into the history books!
-
i think the subtle elegance and refined proportions is what makes this stand out so i'd say it's fine as is
-
Yep, it's a TKL. Can you please share some pics of the back side facing the toblerone?
-
nice board. the beige looks so good.
-
I love the cream with the patinated brass!!! So many boards go way too far. This one balances design perfectly!
-
Lovely design overall, well executed. I also like the steeper typing angle for my TKLs. Excited for the project, good luck.

Clean af, when releasing? GLWIC

beautifully designed curvature on the weight and the side profile, keeping it minimalist but not boring :thumb:

I really like the board. Not a big deal, but only thing I would prefer different is to have the board name outside and designer name inside.
-
What's the Front Height ???
Can you please put that in the specs.
Because i don't understand the meaning of EKH (what does it stand for) and most important i don't care to guess..
Thank you..,
-
How about making the Geon PCB's work in this board that would be cool.. i joined the F1-8X V2 and i like the Geon full RGB pcb's he offered because i like me sum under glow when the mood strikes not always but i like the option to turn them on..
-

Thank you..,
EKH is Front Height, or more correctly Effective Keyboard Height (Blacksimon, 2016)
It is the measurement from the bottom plane 0* to the point at which the first switch starts (the bottom of the switch). It is the best measurement because it takes into account the gradient of the board, and also the distance between the front of the keyboard and any spacing in between this and the R4.

Clean af, when releasing? GLWIC
Thank you, appreciate it. If everything goes as planned, we are aiming for a release sometime between September and October.

We've designed Constance to have enough internal space to be compatible with almost all F13 TKL PCBs featuring a north-facing spacebar.

i'm trying to understand .. really a Front height of 23.799 mm with a 9 degree typing angle that's way to much for me.. The F1-8x OG had a 9 degree typing angle with a 19mm front height that was already to much.. That's why i like the new F1-8x v2 with 9 degree typing angle still but Geon Lowered the front height to 16.5mm that's impressive coming from 19mm.. i would consider a 17mm front height with a 9 degree angle to be the max for me.. Guess i have to pass on this mate.. You really need to work on this monster-es typing angle mate..

Elegant design. GLWIC.
From the image below slide profile.
the front height shoule be 18.875mm
EHK maybe means the height from bottom to the first row of switches' top.
-
Please, consider some kind of Green color)
-
I am in for cream. Very interested in the project and happy to see that you are adjusting based on feedback.
-
Spray coated with what? It just says spray coated.
I don't like the external logo on the base. Cheapens it. I don't like brand names usually. If it's something that can be turned into a logo or something, that's fine, but actual brand names.... ugh!
-
Agree with the comments about having keyboard name on the outside by the weight and the designer name inside. No offense to the designer, but a prized keyboard should be able to speak for itself. Additionly I assume the "A" logo on the toblerone weight is the designer logo, so it's already indicated on the exterior? I love the aesthetic of the Constance print inside though, so maybe leave that but mimic it on the outside under the weight - and maybe have the designer signature engraved in the corner of the interior or something?
-
Love the aesthetic of this board. I always have to pass on TKLs because I dislike 99% of top case designs or leds(Line Friends TKL only good one, jjw too good), so very happy with the blank top case. I would have preferred a non split plate for the deeper pitch. Will plate files be released and if so is there any fitment/design issue if I redesign the plate as a full piece? Even better would be plate files released for non split too but it’s a simple change for me.

Thank you! We’ll be releasing both split and non-split plate files, so you’re covered. There shouldn’t be any fitment issues if you decide to go with the full plate.

Hello everyone , here comes the announcement you've all been waiting for!
After a long development process, we are excited to announce the GB date for Constance TKL:
GB Dates: October 10th, 2024 - November 11th, 2024
Estimated Shipping: Q2 2025 (considering LNY)
Here’s a summary of what has changed since the IC
1. Based on your feedback, we’ve adjusted the pricing to be more appealing. The starting configuration is now $439 USD, which includes a plate and solder PCB. If you’ve been holding off, now’s the perfect time to jump in. I assure you, the quality will be worth every penny!
2. The plate has been redesigned for a more stable spacebar.
3. Several of you raised concerns about the long feet causing a "thuddy" sound due to vibrations, especially in the spacebar, even on desk mats. We tested it and found the issue valid. Our solution is to keep the aesthetic of the long feet but elevate the end points so there are only four contact areas. This gives the keyboard a cleaner, more poppy sound. Special thanks to Della 960 for inspiring this design and giving their blessing.
4. We’ve added the Raw colorway! These cases will be clear anodized to prevent oxidation, but they’ll show machining marks and scratches, which I think adds to the charm of raw boards.

I'm so glad I came across your update note on 26 Sep, 2024 today on 5 Oct, 2024. I'm equally glad that you have turned out to be a designer that would make changes when they are good for everyone.
On the very same day, 26 Sep, unaware of your updates, I contacted my local vendor and expressed my dismay about the pricing structure being discriminatory towards customers wanting non-metalic plates. All vendor's responses were based on his own assumptions but presenting them as a fact and keep escalating a simple discussion to a full feud now. The last discussion from this vendor was, he was happy to cancel all my standing orders when I didn't ask to do so.
Even though it is going to cost me more, I will not allow to be bullied by my local vendor and will place my Constance TKL order with another vendor.
Once again, thank you for your integrity as a designer to identify and fix the problem quickly.

The keyboard kit does not include a PCB, so you will have the option to purchase either the solder or hotswap PCB separately :D

Thanks so much for reaching out and for your kind words about the update! I'm really glad you found it helpful. I'm sorry to hear about the frustrating experience you've had with your local vendor. I've worked with the vendors I chose for Constance on multiple projects, and I do believe they're good vendors who wouldn't intend for anyone, especially a potential customer, to feel that way. That said, I don't know all the details, and I sincerely hope everything can be resolved smoothly.

I’m really sorry if you saw our discussion as anything other than a friendly debate. A lot of the micro and macro economics we talked about were about the industry in general and not all were specifically about Constance. Meeting MOQs for some products or parts can always help lower prices and costs on other items and is often why some things are bundled together.
The change on the 26th was in part inspired by your feedback as I and Aiglatson discussed it on that day and I shared your concerns. I’m glad the change is to your satisfaction.
I don’t want any customer to be unhappy and not want to shop with us, but that’s a choice I will always respect. In rare cases I may offer the choice to have any orders refunded in full (and the products raffled for charity which I would personally match too) where a customer makes it clear I have not met their needs. I try to foster inclusivity and always want to hear my customers opinions and thoughts.
With that in mind, I’m more than happy to offer you a free Constance TKL in your choice of configuration when the group buy starts as a gesture of goodwill.
I always enjoyed our conversations and looked forward to your replies and the friendly discussion that often came about. Being challenged is a great motivator for improvement and that’s something I always welcome.

Thank you for your thoughtful and mutual response to my earlier post. I'm pleased had a part in something positive.
In case the community hasn't realised what just has happened yet; All customers wish to use non-metalic plates with this board now pay $30 less than in the previous pricing structure. Please thank Aiglatson Studio for "their decision" but I like, personally, thank those on my local vendor's live stream today (Sunday 06/Oct) that called me all sort of names while this thread was being shown and my local vendor insisting he was not a bully.
One quick question please:
The image titled: "Spray Cream + Patina brass weight" would you say, in person, the cream color more accurately represented on the left or right side please?
I'm only sharing my thoughts on Constance TKL bumpon feet style and it is entirely up to you if you would like to do further work on it or not. Thank you for your attention in advance.
I know I may be too late on the board's feet solution. After watching the build stream by friend of yours, great job (its so heavy x 1m time), I would have kept the cutouts on the four corners only with the newly thicker bumpons. Currently you have to make far more cutouts and these cutouts have no functional meaning and consequently you have to use more materials to cover them up. You would significantly reduce manufacturing time and cost by making four cutouts instead of over 16 (approx). Sorry, I coudn't count them precisely.
My common sense, not scientifically, tells me less sounds from vibration would escape from the bottom case having only four cutouts instead of 16 (approx). In your new design, the weight of the board is pressed against the four corners only now.
Another concern I have is, since the end points are thicker than the middle part (bumpon strip) after releasing stress/force on each ends it would cause a curve, outwardly, in middle part of the strip. Putting down the board on the desk will introduce the stress/force on each ends and once the board is lifted up the force is released. If the curve is a stronger force than the tightness of the bumpon clips then they would pop out or eventually become loose after few repetitions. Considering the board often is moved or dragged over a textured/rough deskmats it would make the strip to come out much easier as well.
I'm certain, aesthetically, the bottom side still will look good, if not better, with only four bumpons.
I personally don't mind you pocket all the savings, if any, you would make out of the these changes.
Please consider my proposal and I encourage others that agree with my findings to drop a post too for an assurance to a designer that will listen to the community. Thank you.
-
Personally, I can't see how the way they redesigned the feet would cause enough strange forces to make them "pop out" or become loose. I love the new design of the foot strips, as I think it's a very novel and creative way to maintain the desired aesthetic while functionally behaving similar to how four individual bumpons would. Greatly prefer they keep the feet design as-is
What I'm not convinced of, and still wish they'd reconsider, is the branding. I fully understand the designer wanting to get their name out there, but there's a reason why most custom keyboards have extremely subtle external branding if any at all - I think it cheapens the look of the board in a lot of cases. This is personal opinion, though I know I'm not alone on this topic. We tend to see branding like this most on pre-builts and retail boards. IMHO the design of the board should speak for itself. Aiglatson studio already has a logo on the toblerone weight, which should be enough for the exterior of the board. People are going to see the board and say "Oh is that the aiglatson?" Instead, they should be seeing it and saying "Oooh is that the Constance?" Where the bottom case has "Aiglatson" printed would look considerably better if "CONSTANCE" were printed there using the same font they used on the interior. The designer could then have more branding in the interior of the board. To be frank, it may seem minor but it's the likeliest thing to keep me from buying the board which otherwise looks amazing

The strange force is more of a concern to me than a proven issue. I have to have the board on hand to test it myself. However, technically all the cutouts between end points have no functional meaning because technically they are no longer are "bumpon feet". To me that is a good reason not to have them anymore. Furthermore, it would add more weight, albeit negligence, to the bottom case.
I would also agree with all saying they rather see the name of the board engraved outside of the case.

Yeah you're right they have no functional meaning. The designer already said it was so that they could keep their preferred aesthetic of the long strips along the bottom without negatively impacting the sound characteristics. I don't mind it, I actually like the look of the long strips better (on this particular board)
Also, the more weight the better :) I love few things more than a heavy keyboard (typing this on my 4.9kg Mammoth lol)
cheers

All vendor's responses were based on his own assumptions but presenting them as a fact and keep escalating a simple discussion to a full feud now. The last discussion from this vendor was, he was happy to cancel all my standing orders when I didn't ask to do so.
Even though it is going to cost me more, I will not allow to be bullied by my local vendor and will place my Constance TKL order with another vendor.
Once again, thank you for your integrity as a designer to identify and fix the problem quickly.
Thank you.
For the image, please check out Geon's stream where you can see a more accurate representation of the color.
Regarding the feet design, the reason for the many cutouts is to ensure the feet sit flush with the case. As for concerns about the feet popping out, they’re made from 90a hardness silicone, so I believe they will be able to bear the weight of the keyboard without deforming much.
If we find any more issues, we’ll make sure to fix them, and they won’t be present in the production units. Thanks again for your feedback!

they're right though. you should be thanking pT in the first place

does a purple prototype exist? i would love to see a pic before choosing a color

This is the only photo we have of the purple.

I love this. Is there any color or treatment information and picture of the Fenix patina weight? I am trying to decide which weight would best go with the Assam color. Thank you!
-
I love everything about this board except the price. for how many units it's gonna sell, I feel like it can be a tad cheaper.
-
would love if the full brass bottom was also available to purchase outright vs. rng
(I do appreciate the giveaway though!)

Same. I’m not playing around w “buy it aftermarket” or “maybe we’ll sell it later”

Wonderful, thank you, this is the one to get!

Will the PCB be truly USB-C compliant? Specifically, will it have at least the two pulldown resistors required by the spec to enable 5v power supply?
I have encountered boards that have a USB-C port but can only be connected to USB-A on the computer side (TKD Cycle7). I don't understand why PCB designers do this (to save the cost of 2 resistors?) but it's apparently common.

Yes, the PCB will be fully USB-C compliant.

Amazing, cant wait for this, just picked up my first group buy
Assam with Fenix Patina. Truly love the red design to counter the blue tgr tomo I am currently rocking.

beautiful, this is icing on the cake I prefer the type C to type C cables greatly.
Truly excited this will be my first tkl as well!! Now I am on the hunt for the switches ;D!
