It's just an in-line addition, I've got an old gamepad with the same setup.  Either it shunts into unused pins of the matching keyboard connector, or you can stack these a couple deep.

For me ,the ALPSulator is still tops, especially the white model, but as it's rather expensive for a keypad/calculator, I'm still searching.
