It's a few years old, has an RTX 3060, an i7, 32 GB DDR4 and 3 TB total SSD space, it does the job.

Why would I need a desktop and a laptop?
-
Desktop for raw performance, laptop for portability.
Unless you don't need raw performance, then just a laptop with a dock if fine.
-
Shiiii man, I never even take my Switch out the dock

I have yet to play my Switch 2 outside of the dock. Why go from 4K 60 FPS down to 1080P?
It will be nice when traveling, but I don't do that enough.

Tp4 lookn' 2 buy @ 14" around 3 pounds if possible.
Currently rolling a T460 3.8lbs, 4.3ish lbs with 6 cell.
Was doing the G5 5590 a while back at 6.3lbs, + 1.5lb charger, no more of that. Tp4 = old now.
Want to lighten up.
Butttttttttt, it seems 14 inch aluminum laps arn't thttttt much lighter.

my device loadout:
laptop - m2 macbook air
tablet - 12.9 m1 ipad pro
gaming pc - matx case
console - ps5, switch
best combo for the value oriented buyer. these devices fit my use cases perfectly but ymmv. you can get all of this used for what people spend on a fancy new gaming pc. I would like a steam deck at some point, but usually play at my friends place instead.

Sniping knows damn well Tp4 can't afford no macbook.. :D

I still use my ten-year old 8" Windows tablet every week, although only for reading PDFs.
I've ranted about its virtues enough on this forum this past decade.

Tp4 still has a running nexus 7", even youtube stopped working on it after they stopped updating.
Ereader works though.

I mean, I got my 16 year old 15lb ASUS gaming laptop that got me through my first year of college. **** is SO HEAVY though and would constantly power off randomly due to terrible air flow and heating control.

gaming laptop
Glad to be an outlier. I don't game at all, and consider a laptop to be a kind of toy that I take with me when I am away from home for more than 24 hours.
Any legit content on the laptop is immediately transferred to the "big, real" computer and a hard drive for long-term storage - or else deleted.
That way the laptop is lean and mean, but always ready to fall back on at any time for any reason.
-
Tp4 is feeeling that hesitation. Wants to buy a gam4n' laptop again. They're lighter slightly these days. Hrrrm...
-
Tp4, do not buy a gamn4r laptop, they're horrible. Tp4 listen Tp4.
-
Currently a 14in Lenovo T480 I5 (or I7?) w/16gb ram, 256gb ssd.
USB C charging, plenty of ports and new/fast enough for Win11 (not that I use it) without later Intel issues.
Probably the best budget laptop you can buy.

Bro, brahh brooooo0sk, you for serial Asooos, the UEFI shell has wifi access.. WT.. OMG, seriallll..?? OMG....
This is like, the least secure thing ever. omg.. Yoo catch a bootkit, and is game over. Don't take ur pc to foreing countries cuz, bootkits everywhere on every netwurk. .
Also these "stock" asoos apps, every single one asks you to register. Kinda invassive.
So we don' even trust dat mirosoft, and we're suppppose to just trust dat Assoos ?
-
OMg, so Tp4 do dat reformat, jump through a few bios setting just to get the drive to show up.
Ok, fine, everything's fine, get into windows, no wifi drivers, ok fine, it's a fairly new chipset. OK, shiftf10 oobe, normal right?
Now, into windows, no wifi drivers, Tp4 go to asus website download wifi driver.
It's the wrong damn driver, and it doesn't work.
Have to go to intel's site and download their drivers, Confidence in Asoos @ an all time low.

Hrrm? The copilot function thing doesn't even use the NPU, it's a pretty big expense on the die, and the copilot doesn't even use it..
/Frustrated. People are paying for this.
It seems the only thing that uses the NPU on copilot is currently the background blur function for the camera. /Umm..
Ok. well.. Hrmm,

Not exactly thrillled about this CPU.
Intel 256v, it's kinda anemic. Steam tops out at 197mbps. Either the cpu is just tapped or some setting is not right or IDK.
On less compressed games, it can hit 480mbps on wifi, but not through the USB realtek adapter? But then it can bench 1Gigabit ethernet no problem.
Weird.

Welp, HDR doesn't work properly on an $830 laptop. NICE. Just oooozes quality.
What can you expect for <$1000 these days, not Proper HDR that's for sure.
Kind of a shame, cuz the panel is extremely well tuned otherwise. Color is great, they even allow sustained 600nits in HDR mode, but the PQ is completely messed up. It treats basically everything after 200nits as highlight and pushes hard. It honestly doesn't make any sense.
