Title: Napping: Too Extreme?
Post by: elservo on Wed, 10 November 2010, 12:30:48
When I nap, it seems to piss off everyone around me.  If my wife catches me asleep midday, she kicks me in the butt, if I pass out when she's working, my friends choose that time to text and call me until I get up.

Are my occasional naps causing me harm that I am unaware of?  Are my friends and loved ones trying to save my life by waking me up constantly?  Is the Topre keyboard in my possession making me too zen?  Why am I not allowed to nap?

Is napping too extreme?  Thoughts?  I say no, but apparently I'm the only person that finds them beneficial.  Is napping akin to bungee jumping with a ziplock bag full of scorpions in your boxer shorts?  Please help, Geekhack.

i think an afternoon nap is a very civilized thing to do.  I think it makes one more productive too, you end up working for more hours having a nice recharging snooze at midday.

if corporations had any sense at all, they would provide napping rooms for all employees, with really nice napping couches.  Keep the free snapple, just leave me alone for 2 hours.

I could go for a thick slice of nap right now.  Stupid job forcing me to stay awake...

One of my concession employees looks high as a kite right now.  I bet that guy could use a nap or three.  Or a firing.

I've been napping pretty much every weekday afternoon since 7th grade algebra class, and I've been doing it for 30 years working in corporate and military America. Lots of studies have shown that a fifteen or twenty minute nap is very good for you, and I believe it.

I used to nap in my car at work. We don't really care if people take a little longer for lunch.  I think naps are great for boosting productivity.

I've never understood people who need napping. I'm never tired in the middle of the day and believe I couldn't take a proper nap even if I tried.

when I was interning at raytheon my fellow intern would vanish every afternoon for an hour around 3. One day he showed up at 4 in my cubicle with red marks on his face. I asked him where the hell he was, and he said sheepishly, "sleeping in the lab :)"  Lol he found this great spot in the server room where no one ever goes.

Naps make me feel horrible afterwards. Like I've been slapped around a bit. This weird limbo feeling where you don't know what day it is. Sleeping in, on the other hand, is awesome.

We usually drink anywhere between 10 and 20 beers when we go to the sauna.

If you can sleep, it's probably a good idea to do so. If you drink a coffee before you take a nap then when you wake up you can be very alert, as the caffeine kicks in at just the right time. Do this when your circadian rhthm gives you the afternoon boost and you'll be unstoppable.

So true. Normally after lunch, I drink a can of Coke before take a nap of 15-30mins. It feel's like i slept a whole day within that 15-30mins.

I never nap but I make sure I sleep at least 8 hours a night. Usually I up it to 9 or 10 on weekends.

If I feel tired I usually manage to hold out till the weekend and then just crash at 9 or 10 at night and sleep till the next morning at 9 or 10.

I believe that naps are good for you but I just can't fall asleep so quickly, often need half an hour or an hour to do so :)

This (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyphasic_sleep#Scheduled_napping_to_achieve_more_time_awake) is extreme napping.

The Uberman sleep schedule supposedly maximizes REM sleep with six 20~30min naps through the day, for a total of 2~3h sleep a day.

I think that was proven not to work in the long run. Your body needs more sleep to recover properly.

Anyways, I sleep for about 7,5h average, and I'm never feeling sleepy during the day. I guess it depends on every individual.

Yeah, even though it could be enough time to refresh your mind, I'd assume in the long run it wouldn't be very healthy.
Still, pretty extreme and cool even if you just keep it up for a few weeks.

I'd settle for something in between, a schedule that would allow me to sleep less during the night (stay up late, wake up early) and take a nap or two during the day.

Even though that is kind of what I'm doing right now, its not working very well.
I might get through a week sleeping 3~4h each day w/ an occasional nap.
But then on the weekend I'll sleep like 16h straight.

Still, when you fail to get enough sleep, a nap can really get you up to speed.

I've been through military training (basically a mandatory thing in Finland) and there were plenty of times when we would have 3-4 hours of sleep per night, and possibly a few naps during the day. We kept that up for 5-7 days and after that could basically get all the sleep we needed to fully recover. For me it took about 12 hours of sleep in two consecutive nights and I was fully recovered. It could have been possible to continue that 3-4 hour sleep/night schedule for at least 5 more days without too much problem IMO.

The biggest problem with this one is that after a week or so your body starts to feel exhausted even tho you might feel pretty good in general. The muscles need more rest than the brain does, and the muscles don't rest on the couch watching TV like they do when you're sleeping.

Coffee or caffeine pills work way more efficiently than those so called "energy drinks". All they do is they dehydrate your body.
