"SHADOWSTACK" Metal Artisan Keycap Set

Hello everyone, this is Novaris Studio. We’re a cross-disciplinary chinese studio started by an architect and a visual designer — two people brought together by a common love for designing keycaps and keyboards.

Today we bring you a set of metal artisan keycaps.

1.DESIGN CONCEPT

As architects, we're always browsing through architectural projects for a spark of inspiration. Then one day, while looking for reference for a commercial project, it hit us — those stepped courtyards, grilles, and fenestrations would look awesome as artisan keycaps.

Inspiration secured — so what's next?
Obviously, it's doodling keycaps during work hours! Architectural design? Let someone else handle it. If we run out of time, our manager will figure something out (yeah, we're totally phoning it in! HAHA!).

2.DESIGN MANUSCRIPT

People keep asking me why I always prefer to sketch by hand first.
Honestly, whether I'm working on a daily project or talking things through in the early stages, I just feel more comfortable putting my thoughts down with a pen. It's never been about making the drawings pretty or nailing the perfect perspective. For me, sketching is purely for refining ideas, catching inspiration, keeping records, and making communication and collaboration easier.
To me, it's just a way of "thinking with my hand" — the quickest, rawest, and most satisfying way to drag an idea out of my head and onto paper. Nothing more.

In total, we designed 16 keycaps: 12 in R1 profile — enough to pack the F-row — plus 4 R4 arrow keys. (Of course, feel free to put them wherever you like — we won't interfere.)

We designed the keycap in two pieces — the top with the pattern and the bottom as the base. They're held together by a iron sheet and magnets.
Due to height constraints, the arrow keycaps cannot be made in a top-and-bottom two-piece construction, so we’ve kept them as single-piece CNC-machined units!

4.CURRENT PROGRESS

We've completed the CNC machining stage for the prototypes. Now we're waiting for the subsequent anodizing and spray painting.
