Title: Storing keyboards - lay flat or on edge?
Post by: whininggit on Wed, 17 November 2010, 14:09:14
Is there any consensus on the best way to store keyboards when they are not going to be used for some time? Should they be stored flat (as if they are on a desk), or on one of their edges (bottom, back, sides)? Does it really make any difference (as with Laserdiscs, where storing them on their edge is recommended).

Since keyboards were designed to be laid flat with nothing on the keys, that would be ideal but is not always practical.  My favorites are stored in boxes individually, or sometimes 2 per box with the bottom one face up and top one face down.  Some I store in large boxes vertically like file folders in a filing cabinet, taking care not to have tension on the cords or anything resting on the cords.

Believe it or not, this works very well for storing keyboards vertically. Leaning the keyboards with their keys facing slightly downwards leans the top of the board against the chrome. At least for the Model M, which is the only keyboard I have whose keys were close to or touching anything, the space between the F keys lines up with the chrome bars in such a way that they are not impacted by the leaning.
