I emailed Majestouch a few weeks ago before I ordered my (sadly not otaku) tenkeyless brown, and he said he's had an order in for blank key caps for awhile, but the factory's been putting special items like that on hold in order to meet growing demand for full keyboards. So you can blame the StarCraft nerds not only for the browns always being out of stock, but also for there being no blank key caps available.

Hopefully the factory will catch up to demand soon and fill Elitekeyboards' order of blank key caps.

Hey, Blame Fwiffo for claiming the keyboard Fruitdealer used was a Majestouch instead of a Zero.

That aside, not all of us got Browns. I picked up a Blues keyboard. And it is magical.

Though I would like to pick up a Tenkeyless Filco at some point, possibly a Brown switch one.

Yea I've given up for the time being on blank keys. EKB didn't have any in stock so like you fssbzz, I went on a huntin spree and came up short :(. Wish the US had more options on where you can purchase nifty keyboards/caps. All we got left is clickclack and his pimp key caps!

and i talked to DAS, ask if the have the Ultimate Das Key cap for sell.
they don't have any, but ask me if i want to ship back my kb and change for the ultimate kb, but i must cover both shipping.
that might be a better choice.
but if i ship it back.. i will suffer a lot.
i cant live without typing on cherry mx brown a day.

google chrome = best friend when ordering from sites in a different language.

I then use http://translate.google.com/ for the confirmation emails (if they are in a different language as well)

For Autocad, it's more mouse than keyboard so I currently use a Xai for work.
Hopefully I enough spare dough to buy a mechanical keyboard for work.

Actually, Ripster thinks he may have been wrong about it being a Zero (http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=Island:12841&do=comments&p=2487%2094#post248794), and that my original assessment may have been correct.

I do mainly web development so use the keyboard more. They didn't give me a new one at that :(. I saw a faded space bar and a few other keys which led me to bring in my own snit.

My life has been changed.

Well, not really. But this whole thing over the browns is a bit much. More so when people that don't touch type want them. Or people thinking their APM will be better as a result; I find it all hilarious.

And if you want someone to leave your keyboard alone at work, just get Colemak or Dvorak legends. Or do what I use to do, and leave a Qwerty keyboard plugged in but have the OS use Dvorak. People can't handle key strokes not matching their legends.

Whats that mean exactly?

I think that means they don't have the layer applied to the ones stock on the boards that covers the printed legends. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Filco puts an extra layer on the key to make the whole top face matte instead of coating just the legend letter/symbol, for prettiness and evenness I assume.

Ah okay.  Isnt that a good thing?  I heard that coating wears off after a while and the keys look all splotchy

well in sc2 nerds' defense, id argue that the keyboard is more important than your mouse, unless youre a noob and dont use hotkeys or have ultra low sensitivity

im glad that people are getting into the market of better keyboards because of fruitdealer and other koreans who were seen with filcos, should create more competition like the new zowie.  i am surprised so many people were willing to drop that kind of money on a keyboard that doesnt look flashy though.

That shot of FruitDealer was the reason I started looking into Filcos. Then I came here and found tons of people either thoroughly enjoying theirs or thoroughly hating the wait for theirs. Then all the reasons like those in the Filco vs Das comparisons made me get the Filco. I'm a SC2 fan (I mostly enjoy watching the GSL), but I don't play it enough to want the keyboard for SC2. It's mostly for the copious amounts of typing I do at home and work.

Yeah, Starcraft 2 was also the reason I looked into mech keyboards.

And honestly, playing with the Cherry Blues is so much nicer than on rubber domes. Makes you feel so much more speedy which helps a lot. Such a light and quick action. A bit noisy but for my German brown Tenkeyless I will have to wait some more. My wallet also thanks me for that.

So yeah, if you play SC2 regularly, it's worth it for that alone. Plus typing on that thing is awesome you you win twice.

Never played SC2, wasn't much into the first one. I'm really liking my buckspring compared to my Logitech wave (rubber dome). Expecting the blue and brown to be even better.

Hehe no, most of that wear is from TF2 where its all about go go go push push push.

Though it is interesting to see that it looks like i strafe/dodge left more than right =P

-------------------

Between SC2 nerds, and razer getting into mechanicals (which is how i found out about them) and those people spreading word of mouth, the demand for mechanical keyboards has gone through the roof in the united states and europe.

So while it does suck right now that its hard to nab a tenkeyless Filco brown...in the end this will mean its now worth it for other sites and manufacturers to get into mechanical keyboards and we will have choices aside from Filco, Das, Deck, Rosewill, Realforce, HHKB, iOne, and Razer.

If interest continues to build some capitalistic entrepreneurial business guy will get dollar signs in their eyes and open a site like elitekeyboards but will stock many different types, brands, switches and keycaps.

Then expand past gamers into business world by claiming your mechanical keyboards are proven to improve productivity.

The more interest there is the cheaper these things will eventually get and the more choice we will have.  At least for a few years until some American parent company buys all the smaller guys and runs a monopoly unchallenged by the US government =x

I'm sure we all know some guy who likes golfing but he sucks at it.  But clearly its not him who sucks its his clubs.  So he goes out and buys a $8000 set of clubs expecting it to make him good.

There is a large subset of gamers who are the same way.

I think the peoples interest in mechanical keyboards breaks down into this:

Gamers looking for an edge
Coders looking for comfort
Typists looking for less strain and wpm
Elitists looking for self esteem
Nerds looking for luxury
Ancient nerds looking for the good old days

Well, your post was brought up when I mentioned the Marauder gaming keyboard after I tested it at PAX. Which spurned me doing a lot of research on mechanical keyboards, because some people had mentioned mechanical keyboards before in the mumble server I loiter in.

So, in a round about way, I can thank you for prompting some interest in mech keyboards, but the final results are all my own research.  Unlike most people over at TL.net and OCN that just go "OMFG, BROWNS BEST BUY NOW."

And honestly, with a Browns board right next to me now, I have to say I prefer the feedback the Blues give quite a bit more. Browns just don't feel as crisp.

As for people thinking better equipment = better performance, everyone is this way in every field. Someone mentioned a craftsmen, and I think another great example is photography, where I see people get dSLR cameras thinking they'll suddenly be Ansel Adams or such, and their work just sucks and all they take is Bokeh pictures.

If you're using firefox, you can highlight the dropdown, view selected source, and copy/paste that into a separate google translate window. You'll need to set the first dropdown before it'll change the second one, but it's all pretty straightforward.

Weird. When I go to create a new address in the armygroup system, I don't get space for a zip code, just an address. I put my whole address in that.

But when I go to checkout, it has a zipcode field that's blank and uneditable. Anybody else seen this / got around it ?

But when I go to checkout, it has a zipcode field that's blank and uneditable. Anybody else seen this / got around it ?

I put my street address (e.g. 123 Fake Street Unit 4) in the address field to the lower left (translates into "Building Address/Name/Number" or something) and my region with zip/postal code in the top-right box (e.g. Toronto, Ontario, A1B 2C3). Country selected within the dropdown.

This is for AG's site anyway. Don't know about the other one.

I read about mechas and how they are suppossed to be awesome but without testing, I couldn't say. So it got one. And now I'll will get more

Okay, so I get a new monitor in pretty regular intervals too. Damn you OLED, you take way too long to arrive to finish this once and for all >.<

So, have you got PA301W?

OLED could be outphased before becoming norm.

OLED is the Duke Nukem Forever of display technologies. Actually, most display technologies are the Duke Nukem Forever of display technologies. With all the setbacks and delays, it's just taking reasonable odds to suppose something else is going to come along.

The same thing happens with storage technologies. Hard drives are supposed to always be nearing a brick wall, but they never hit it, and whatever is supposed to replace them (bubble memory, magneto-optical, whatever) never really pans out. Flash SSDs are the closest so far, and really, they're just creating a new layer rather than replacing HDDs outright.

Set? Dunno. Judging by the time it took LCDs to become higher-quality than CRTs, these processes are very slow and expensive.

I am much more interested in the e-ink and the likes, where you can have totally reflective display, which draws no power on static picture. A colour one with good size/resolution and refresh rate, even with 5-bits per component will rule my world.

In the rare case Duke Nukem doesn't take forever, we can simply shift to Unicomp Mini.

Follow it all there. Oled IS coming. It simply took ages to get a reasonably stable blue that won't decompose after just 5000 hours. Now it's mostly about scaling to become cost effective.
Oh, and it will probably late 2011 when the ink-jet tech has eradicated it's current problems so you can start roll to roll manufacturing. The roadmap is somewhere around 2015 for price parity with current LCD tech. They need to recoup the investment. Oh, and expect a flood of OLED devices mid to late next year also. Samsung is REALLY gearing up it's production capabilities since they are currently supplylocked thanks to overwhleming demand for small device OLED.

Also, LCDs are NOT higher quality than CRTs, they simply have different strenghts. Their response times and contrast simply blow. ~1:3000 is currently the ceiling and that's on PVA which simply isn't as fast as TN. Not to mention those 2ms are a pure hoax and merely a "the very very best case" value.

eink displays are awesome but seriously, the current "refresh rates" are... yeah. I mean, awesome for reading texts but watch those page flips. And 5-bit per channel? So much banding. >.<

Okay, sorry, WAY off topic here ^.^;;

I guess you know about modern IPS types, including the recent 10-bit ones. Except for some specific niche tasks, can you cite reasons to prefer CRT? I know why I don't.

Yep, I stated that progress in refresh rate is necessary. And yes, 5-bits per channel is okay-ish. I use laptops in 16-bit mode to conserve battery, no problemo. How much a non-photo oriented desktop really needs?

I'll believe it when I can buy it. OLED has been a year or two away for years now (http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/29/samsung-lays-out-oled-roadmap/), and the next six months in Iraq are the really important ones (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friedman_%28unit%29).

IPS is nice, but contrast is around 1:12-1:1500 for the good ones and they are still slower than TNs. Both things where a CRT is superior.
And 10-bit? I'm certain you mean displays with 10-bit LUTs, they have been around in the professional market for quite some time. And are sooo badly expensive. I don't get it why it's reserved to upper-class displays, the tech must be inexpensive and without it any tweaking of monitor contrast and gamma curves results in banding >.<

Are you sure 16-bit mode conserves battery? Didn't use it in ages ;-)

@Fwiffo:
Who cares how much the roadmap is delayed. There are already small devices OLED being used and it will only go up. LG already released a first consumer buyable one, sure, $3000 for 15 inch but hey, LCDs started out even more ridiculous. For a much, much worse tech. Plus, OLED lighting.
Not on anyone normal's roadmap but here in Europe Philips and Osram are already clearing the stock of their energy saving fluorescent lamps. (because the decision to BAN incandescent here in Europe certainly was a completely ecologically propelled decision... yeahhhhhh)

Yes, 10-bit panel. LUTs are 14-bit. Like this:
PA271W-BK-SV (http://www.necdisplay.com/Products/Product/?product=186bb118-0c70-4c6a-a511-6d39c54f61bd)

16-bit mode conserves battery because of half the memory accesses on each refresh. Benefit depends on what power the other components draw.

Ah, ok.

And as specified, 1:1000 contrast ratio. Not very breathtaking. As is the 7ms gtg response time. The alternate 16ms given on the site is probably the average.

Sure, the color accuracy is awesome as well as color reproduction but the rest makes this a purely graphics monitor. Nearly got myself a Fujistu IPS which is reportedly pretty fast and has amazingly lwo input lag for an IPS but in the end I settled for 120Hz with a similar contrast and am pretty happy for gaming.

You make me a LED backlit 120Hz IPS and I'll very gladly come on board. But nothing on the horizon yet :-(

All aboard the off topic train.

I have the HP ZR30w and I use it for gaming. It's comparable to the fastest TN panels and has no input lag. Disadvantages are obviously it costs more than a huge TV, and for competitive gaming there is no way you would want a 30" monitor.

Aren't networked games fixed to 60 Hz or such? I think ETQW was even 30 Hz.

Lag of LCDs is mostly from being one frame behind, due to processing. Sometimes two frames, for some models. Even if it had CRT output but had a framebuffer to handle resampling and various processing, it'll be lagging.

Also, its 16:10. I thought about buying the 24" version for gaming lately but then discovered the 16:10 ratio, turns me off.

Too bad, because the screen itself is impressive.

And thanks for the link.  I added to the Taiwan section of the "Mechanical Keyboards Sorted By Switch" buying wiki.

$25 I think, my total was $49.34.

Now if only the postman would bring this box in mint condition.

A trick I figured out is to force Chrome to reparse the page. Sometimes things get changed on screen but the translator doesn't know to do another pass. Just set the "English" in the "Translate from Chinese to English" to something else (like Dutch). Let Chrome chug through. Then, swap it back to English. It should force a reparse and tada, you have a translation that is updated.

Have fun!

Note: This obviously won't work on the text that's actually embedded as images, but those can be figured out by trial and error (and some clever guessing).
