Title: How hard to find key caps for Cherry MX11900?
Post by: turbocharged on Fri, 19 November 2010, 10:08:32
Hey everyone, first post here.

I recently bought a Cherry MX11900 keyboard of ebay (LINK (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rt=nc&nma=true&item=220679357127&si=8PZzHPQ%252Fv9LWhMqV7KqbXtcjJ5U%253D&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_878wt_905)) and there was no picture, but for $20 shipped I figured why not...good way to test out some Cherry MX Blacks before dropping $160 on a Deck Legend.

Anyway, I just received this email from the company:

Good Morning,

In reference to your eBay order# *****.
Our
technicians have informed me that the Cherry Switch Keyboard that you
ordered has failed our QA process due to a missing Tab Key.  The keyboard
works fine without it and if you press where it was it still tabs but the
actual key is missing.  Please let me know if you would like to purchase
this as is with the missing Tab Key or would you like to me cancel your
order and refund your PayPal account.

I will hold on to this order until
I hear from you.

Now, I'm not even sure if this keyboard is beige or black, but I plan on dyeing the keys anyways, so it doesn't really matter much to me. Would I have any trouble finding a Tab key for it (where would I even find one?) or should I cancel the order?

Would be pretty easy to find one I'd think - tab is a normal size on that board so almost any Cherry G80- or G81- keyboard could be the donor. As an interim measure, you could move the scroll lock keycap there (not the right size, but it would do).

Maybe ask them for a partial ($5?) refund, they'd probably rather make a couple of dollars than none!

I second finding a donor 'board on eBay, probably a G81-something would be the cheapest route.  That, or you could post something in the classifieds forum for one.  With all the people that went in on the double shot group-buy getting their keys, there might be someone out there with an extra tab key.

I told them I would take it as it is for $5 off the price. They also said that it is indeed Beige and they would try and get a picture of the actual unit for me...not just the "reference image" seen below (which seems to have the tab key blacked out). We'll see what they say to my offer. In the mean time...anyone with an extra G80 tab key...I'm looking for one now :)

So they agreed to give me $3 off and I said that's fine. So who's got a Tab key that I can snag? Black, White, Beige...doesn't matter to me..I'm going to be dyeing it black anyway.

I'm pretty sure I've got a spare beige tab key you can have for the cost of the postage.
It's off a scrap mx11800 so it should be okay.
