Title: Tenkeyless.
Post by: Shuki on Sun, 21 November 2010, 11:24:28
I have been considering buying a tenkeyless keyboard recently due to me realising my numpad is fairly redundant and the fact a full size keyboard takes up a lot of space on my desk.

The last time I looked at tenkeyless models the only ones which caught my attention were the filco boards as the base of the keyboard is pretty much the minimum necessary size to be able to fit the keys. Whereas other boards seem to have useless extra space at the top or bottom of the board which seems to defeat the point of having a space saving keyboard.

What options are there when it comes to tenkeyless considering I would only buy one which has cherry brown switches or cherry red (if any actually exist)? Are there any boards on the horizon which will have cherry reds?

The only other requirement is that the board would be at least a 4 key roll-over.

I would be grateful if anyone has any suggestions which fulfil these criteria. :)

Best bet at this point would be pchome or armygroup for a tenkeyless with browns. EKB is currently out of tenkeyless with browns.You can check out the wiki for more information.

No cherry reds, unfortunately, so it'll have to be browns... Filco's tenkeyless models are all full NKRO with a ps/2 adapter, and 6 key rollover on usb.

Currently I have a Deck 104key, a steelseries 6g and a Filco Brown (NKRO) so I guess I was looking for more of a change from my current keyboard than the size. However if there is no alternative I would be happy buying I tenkeyless Filco Brown.

@kidchunks  With armygroup will there be any problems with shipping to the UK?

The prices should be the same if not less. It cost $20 for my blank keys when I selected "america and others."

Ducky is cheaper, any real differences I should know about?

Also I assume this is Taiwanese dollars?

Ducky is made a little different than filco hence the cheaper price. Also from what I seen on some of the ducky boards they are not all cherry browns but a mix of black,brown and blue switches.

If money isn't a problem, go with the filco then get the ducky later ^^

Really?

I was reading this and it kind of threw me off.

"The trigger shaft key way of tea is 2.0mm, the pressure grams of 56 ± 20g (2.0 oz ± 0.7 oz), life expectancy 50 million times, MX-axis in the most complex kind of work, the combination of green and black shaft axis characteristics, pressure quite a few grams and green axes, avoiding the long axis of the black hand fatigue problems, using as a two-step with the green axis travel, except the voice of the lack of CLICK, key sound moderate, Single life 50 million times, taking into account office and games."

Looks like it has a mixture of switches. Is that what you're looking for?

Post by: Shuki on Sun, 21 November 2010, 16:43:55
No, in fact if it has anything but brown switchs I don't think I'll get one.

Are all the boards a mixture of switches or do some have all brown?

All the dk1087 models have a mixture of switches from what I've seen.

NO! You can get duckys with one switch type. Just look at the pictures below and you'll see what the board uses.

For your reference.

Tea = Brown
Green = Blue
Black = Black

Post by: Shuki on Sun, 21 November 2010, 17:06:31
Would I be correct in assuming this is 100 percent browns?

http://translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl=en&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fworld.pchome.com.tw%2F%3Fmod%3Ditem%26func%3Dexhibit%26IT_NO%3DDCAH0X-A50118368%26c%3DA05%26tm%3Du

Ones with both seem to show the two types, like brown on the letter keys and blue on insert home page up etc.

You're right, I stand corrected. Finally found a review that showed the internals of a dk1087

Buying a Ducky 1087 right now is actually not recommended because the tab at the left of the arrow keys can break easily if the keyboard isn't handled carefully during the delivery. If you really want one, it is probably better that you wait until they come out with the newer models.

I guess you've made up my mind for me then.

I'll probably order a tenkeyless filco (w browns) in the next few days.

Suddenly so much Tenkeyless to choose, now to decide which has the best build quality.

I would still like a Buckling Spring, if only Unicomp would decide to manufacture a Space Saver Tenkeyless.

The Duckeys with two types of switches are called 80%. Silly really, why settle for 80% of a keyboard when you can buy 100% for the same price?

Same, they would make a killing if they had tenkeyless version available.

geekhack should buy the patent from Unicomp, then, we make our own keyboards

the buckling spring patent has expired. unicomp owns the tooling for manufacturing the parts.

that said, i vote for a version with capacitive switches :)

hmm, i wonder how hard/expensive it would be to make accurate 3d models of the barrels and flyplates, design new tooling, and have it cnc milled. i'll bet our friends at signature plastics could do the injection molding.

I guess someone from China can do that if u can convince him/her that making a buckling spring keyboard is profitable...

So, just for reference, trusting google translate on Chinese is like trusting a hungry dog to keep intruders away from aging meat.

The structure of the language is just so vastly different from English and the Romance languages, at least, that even if it got translated literally, 100% accurately, it would likely still make little sense to you.

The ducky you linked to is 100% brown switches, according to the page. The section you quoted is, near as I can tell, simply saying that brown switches have the best characteristics of the blues and blacks, without the annoying sounds of the blues, or the fatigue of the blacks.

Maybe someone who is better at reading traditional chinese can clarify it further. I'm only passable at simplified, and traditional is, obviously, harder for me to read.
