So I have finally decided what type of keyboard, layout, switch type and everything (Tenkeyless Filco or Ducky) and one problem remains...
Where to buy the keyboard from?
I have three options
1. Elite keyboards 143.00 + 30 dollars shipping 170+ USD
2. PC home 117.00 + 20 dollars shipping 137.00 CAD
3. Go extra safe and buy 2 keyboards from PChome just in case one is a dud
These are both for the exact same model of Filco tenkeyless blue cherry
Fears and Problems
A) What I am afraid of is receiving a lemon/broken keyboard from PCHome and being unable to return or it not being worth it to return
B) Paying huge duty taxes on both keyboards upping the price of a mechanical in Canada even more
C) This is my first keyboard and I have limited cash, I want it to be the best experience.
So tell me geekhackers, should I play it safe and get a US Filco, or play a game of chance and go with a PCHome filco/ducky. From the people who have already ordered from PChome. How was it? Did you pay duties? I understand they label it as a sample?

If you're interested in PCHome, I would wait until more Geekhackers post reviews of their experience with them, so you can have some level of assurance with them. EK is already known here to have high reliability.

Yep! I'll be posting my experience shortly. I think laden3 has already got his ducky which he says hes had no complaints with it.

Good to hear, I think the biggest fear is it coming and breaking mabye a month after use. Even though they are the exact same make I have the strange fears

Keyboards aren't like laptops. If it breaks you can fix it yourself.

I don't have the confidence in my soldering ability (16 year old) But I probably could learn if I had a guide to keyboard repair :D If my Asian cousins on the assembly line can do it I can too

don't be afraid my fellow asian comrade, soldering is in our blood, i didn't know what the heck i was doing and i modded a one of kind keyboard!
(your first 20 solders will be damn nasty, just come back and resolder them, i did)

Just wait till you guys see my box..maybe people will think twice about ordering from PCHome lol!
-
Hahaha - I know you guys aren't asians. Your dads would never let you buy such an expensive keyboard.
so true thats why he only let me buy 1 keyboard instead of my mom's idea 2-3 :(

I plan to sell the keyboard I don't like (Brown vs blue) to my less mechanically inclined friend who justs wants a mech board cause he "knows" its better
-
Many of us have planned the same thing, but instead keep both and buy a 3rd. :)
-
Well my 2nd or 3rd wont be for awhile since I am on low income :L Part time jobs and whatnot

Find a friend as crazy as you are for spending $120+ on a non-bling non-gaming-specialized keyboad and split shipping. I ordered 3 Filcos from EliteKeyboards back in February and split the shipment with a friend. I was dinged for GST+PST+$5 Canada Post collection fee. There is no extra duty on top of that. I was also concerned about a DoA board as it would have been kind of expensive to ship it back (~$25+) for RMA so I asked him to test the boards before shipping just in case since it would have been a hassle for me to ship it back. He said that he already checks them before shipping them out. I don't know if he does this for all boards or just the cross-border ones but I'm glad he does. Also, he ships USPS Global Priority Mail, not UPS/FedEx so you won't get raped for "brokerage" fees.
The reason I suggest trying to find someone to split the order is try adding a few keyboards to your order, the shipping cost only goes up incrementally. e.g. 1 kb=$29, 2 kb=$31, 3 kb=$33. My shipping cost was $33 for 2x tenkeyless Filcos, 1x 104key Filco, 2x 22-key numpads, 2x WASD keys.
I looked at the Ducky tenkeyless and was tempted to get one because I like the Win-key lockout as well as the Alt-Numpad function, but WhiteRice's 1087 cracked on the inside, some plastic frame piece. And apparently he isn't alone with that part cracking. I don't know about you, but when I pay $100+ for a new mechanical keyboard, I want something well made and warrantied. To me, it's worth the extra added cost. Getting 2 keyboards in case 1 breaks from PCHome just does not sit well with me. You can probably get warranty work from them, but unless you can communicate with them effectively, that may be hard. Maybe I'm just getting old but I'd rather pay extra for less hassle in case I run into trouble, but that's me. You may have a different opinion and perspective.

Well, Newegg after I sent them a message about my first option (Rosewill RK 9000) decided to change their mind about deactivating it so now its back in Newegg.ca stock. So once again its tenkeyless vs rk 9000 I just cant justify 170 USD vs 100 CAD so I'm waiting until this Black Friday to pick up my first mechanical keyboard and no matter what, it will be a Filco or a Rosewill by the end of this week or bust.

Just to keep things interesting, I just saw the Razer Black Widow up for pre-order at NCIX for $85. Then I figured I'd check newegg.ca and whaddaya know, they have the Black Widow in stock for $80+13.39 s/h, which is cheaper than the RK-9000 $100+12.24. Neither is showing the bling backlit-keyed Black Widow Ultimate yet.
-
Elitekeyboards. Wait for them to come in stock. China does not need any more money in their economy =p

These keyboards are not made in the USA, buying from a usa retailer is not preventing money from going overseas. Don't be ignorant ;)
Also, Armygroup is another option from overseas that I ordered from. I think I am the only one that chose armygroup over pchome due to cheaper shipping at pchome.

EKB ignores ppl on this board, why keep them in business?
