Title: bloody hell i hate full size keyboards!
Post by: panda-R on Wed, 24 November 2010, 22:52:45
after going tenkeyless  it's so hard to go back to a full size board! I can't keep everything centered and find myself constantly shifting to one side to type.

this predicament leaves me with one thing left to do.... buy a HHKB!

I've actually been wanting to go back to full-sized, just for the numpad.

Shame there's no at least built in function Npad on other keyboards like on the HHKB/Topre.

I've been using my rosewill and my tenkeyless off and on throughout the day and havent noticed much difference feel with or without the numpad other than more desk space and noise lol.

lol, I usually have two keyboards (and two mice) plugged in - just so I can use whichever Numpad is closer to each hand.

I far prefer tenkeyless, so my arms aren't a mile apart while gaming, but there are times a number pad comes in handy. I plan on picking up a dedicated number pad to put on the right of my mouse as soon as I catch a good deal on one.

You could buy one of those crazy Nostromo keypad/mouse gadgets.  Ripster's modded one up with mechanicals, I think.

If you get a touch typing course for your PC they normally teach you how to use the number row.
I find I don't touch the numpad any more.
Also I get RSI if I use a full size board for too long.

if you touch type, 1/0 are damn hard to touch type lol (this coming from a long time 10key user).

I do use the ten key numbers but I find I use the enter button more.  Big hands so its like clicking another mouse button for my right hand meaning I dont have to take it off teh mouse while typing say in IM

You need two of the stand alone numpads just so you can put one on each side of your keyboard. Personally, I can't say I have ever tried to use a numpad with my left hand ???

I'm normally left-handed, so I learned the "reverse" setup anyhow (and then learned the "normal" arrangement, since changing everything around isn't always an option - I use multiple computers at work), then I made a conscious effort to master both.  Now I don't even think about it, except whenever I sit in front of a "normal" computer with but a single pair of input devices (and a single monitor) and just feel uncomfortably limited.

Hmm, I've never tried this, but how about tenkeyless with a USB numpad to the right of the mouse?

What's the point of buying a tenkeyless and a numpad? Just get a full keyboard.  Get two, they're cheap.

You get the best of all worlds, you still have numpad, you still have short keyboard with mouse in close proximity.  For people who need to enter a lot of numerical data, this is important and tenkeyless wouldn't be an option.

The Qtronix Scorpius 32 is a good option with Clear MX switches... and those beautiful dedicated arrow keys.

Or the Tekgadget KP701 is a good blue cherry MX option with limited programmability

The DSI blue cherry boards are a good option that is all in 1, you can swap the top and bottom modules so the qwerty cluster is on bottom.  Then you have a keypad and arrow keys available when needed but out of your way the rest of the time.

You get the mouse-is-easier-to-reach advantages of a tenkeyless without giving up the numpad. The numpad is just extra to the right.

I am disappointed in people that can't use the number row effectively.

i can use, it is just faster with numpad tho. =D

Using the number row "effectively" is not as efficient for raw numerical data entry.  I'd never use it to enter 100K numerical keystrokes, it is not "effective" for such use.

An auxilliary Numpad is also easily remapped for efficient WASD convenience.

+1000, it's impossible to use the mouse on the right side on a full-size keyboard. I actually tried to go leftie before I went tenkeyless and never looked back. The people saying they need a numpad really need to man up and learn the number row. The number row is much more efficient than moving your hand to the numpad and back unless you type 3945493285 - 3844 * 93494 / 34892959 + 4949969 all day.

The point is to have the mouse closer.
Get two, they're cheap? Yeah, the boards are short-lived and mushy, so keep buying them instead of paying 5 times more for a 5 times better board that will last 5 times longer!

you're right. Ever since i made the switch to the force, i've never had the urge to go back to a mouse.

I can put the numpad aside when un-needed and bring in the mouse.

panda's don't wear purple tights nor do they wear t-shirts so i guess i can't buy a HHKB. I'll just have to get the Chocolate PooPoo keyboard!
